The Big Lie of the Protocols of Elders of Zion Shows How Hate Kills

Nobel laureate and Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel stated “the Holocaust began with words.”

There were words that sought to promote hate to Jews and to other minorities in Nazi Germany. Among the first of these was the apocryphal anti-Semitic screed promoted in Adolf Hitler’s Mein Kampf and in Hitler’s speeches from 1921 forward, viewing “The Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion,” an apocryphal claim of a plot for Jews to control the world, as factual.

Originally created by forgers in Tsarist Russia, the anti-Semitic “Protocols of Elders of Zion” fraudulently claims of an organized Jewish plot to take over the world.  Where this hate screed has been sold in book form, its cover shows a hate image of a snake with the Star of David all over its body encircling the world.  This image was part of Henry Makow’s recent article, re-posted by a NYC blogger, promoting the “Protocols” as fact.  (It should give pause to many that this NYC blogger also promotes protests against Muslim mosques in America.)

UnitedStatesAction.com has captured on the Internet, the 1921 London Times articles proving “The Protocols” are a forgery. It provides a transcript of Philip Graves’ articles published in the London Times, August 16 to 18, 1921, entitled  “The Protocols of Zion – An Exposure.” Philip Graves’ articles go into detailed historical analysis to prove the apocryphal nature of the hoax documents.

But despite their exposure as a total fraud and forgery, Adolf Hitler continued to use the apocryphal, anti-Semitic screed the “Protocols of the Elders of Zion” as a rationale to exterminate Jews. When Adolf Hitler came to power, the Nazis made “The Protocols” required reading for German students.  In The Holocaust: The Destruction of European Jewry 1933–1945, Nora Levin states that “Hitler used the Protocols as a manual in his war to exterminate the Jews.”

Words of hate kill.

The U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum reports: “The Protocols of the Elders of Zion is the most notorious and widely distributed antisemitic publication of modern times. Its lies about Jews, which have been repeatedly discredited, continue to circulate today, especially on the Internet. The individuals and groups who have used the Protocols are all linked by a common purpose: to spread hatred of Jews. The Protocols is entirely a work of fiction, intentionally written to blame Jews for a variety of ills. Those who distribute it claim that it documents a Jewish conspiracy to dominate the world. The conspiracy and its alleged leaders, the so-called Elders of Zion, never existed.”

But the apocryphal “Protocols of the Elders of Zion” did not just fade away with Adolf Hitler and Nazi Germany.  The Protocols have also been republished throughout the Middle East and Arab world in contemporary times. In January 2010, Egyptian television station Al-Faraeen broadcast a television series promoting the apocryphal “Protocols” as factual and owner Tawfiq Okasha defended this. (Responsible for Equality And Liberty replied and condemned such promotion of hate screeds.)

The charter of the Foreign Terrorist Organization Hamas explicitly refers to the Protocols of Elder of Zion as factual, and it is referenced in Article 32 of the Hamas Charter.

The apocyrphal “Protocols of the Elders of Zion” have also been widely promoted in Europe and the United States, as well as a wide spread appearance on the Internet.  In Turkey, the “Protocols” remains one of the most popular books.  In the 1920s, American automobile tycoon Henry Ford published 500,000 copies of the “Protocols of the Elders of Zion” to be distributed across America.

There have been contemporary books that have addressed the apocryphal nature of this book such as the Simon Wiesenthal Center’s (SWC) Stephen L. Jacobs “Dismantling the Big Lie: The Protocols of the Elders of Zion,” and Will Eisner’s “The Plot: The Secret History of the Protocols of the Elders of Zion.”

But we should not believe that the anti-Semitic apocryphal hate screed “the Protocols” is limited to history, conspiracy theorists, the Middle East, or Nazi supporters.  Hate has no expiration date, no borders, no races, and no single religion.  Like a virus, hate can spread from the worst to the best of us, and hate can contaminate and destroy us all.

My own personal contact with the “Protocols of the Elders of Zion” came with what I would have thought to be an unlikely source – the U.S. mainstream church, the Presbyterian Church (USA) or PCUSA.  This was my first contact with the “Protocols of the Elders of Zion,” other than reading about it in history books.  Back in 2004, I learned that a PCUSA group supported by the Presbyterian Peacemakers held an event at Wooster College where the “Protocols” was promoted as fact and the Israeli flag was show morphed into a swastika.  Regardless of your views on Israeli politics or foreign policy, there remains no question that the “Protocols of the Elders of Zion” is an anti-Semitic forgery and hate screed.

As a Christian, I felt the responsibility to speak out to members of the Presbyterian Church (USA) on this subject.  Therefore, I reached out to hundreds and hundreds of PCUSA leaders, members, and pastors on this issue.  I purchased and sent copies of Professor Stephen Jacob’s book “Dismantling the Big Lie,” to Presbyterian leaders, including the individual who organized the conference where “The Protocols” was presented as fact.

Later, I traveled to Ohio’s Wooster College myself to speak as a Christian to other Christians on the need to reject such anti-Semitic hate, where Professor Stephen Jacobs spoke to assembled Presbyterians at the Wooster College.  It was clear that some were still not persuaded, and as I stood in the doorway of the exit speaking to one of the leaders of the pro-Protocols conference, I knew that he too was not convinced.  Nor was there any apology coming from representatives of the Presbyterian Peacemakers at the Wooster College that I met.  While the Wooster College apologized for the incident, over six years later, I have never seen a public apology by the PCUSA for a PCUSA-sponsored group holding an event promoting of the “Protocols of Elders of Zion” as factual.

So when you think that promotion of such hate screeds are limited to conspiracy theorists, bigots, and extremists, think again.  To those who think that standing up against anti-Semitic hate is just a “Jewish” responsibility and does not affect other religious, racial, and minority groups, also think again.  As Professor Jacobs concludes in his book “The Big Lie,” “because there is no sense of internal logic to either prejudice or hatred, it remains quite possible that those who hate the Jews as well as these other group will tomorrow adapt such notions to them.  The Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion will remain within the arsenal of those who specifically hate the Jews, but it is equally possible that the false and malicious arguments of the Protocols will be adapted to meet other needs and other agendas.”

Professor Jacobs also states that “People need to see the lies for themselves and the refutation of the lies…we must educate the young people the world over to be textually analytical and discriminating when it comes to materials which make startling and/or grandiose claims that serve to divide the human community from itself even further than it has been in the past or which challenge the legitimacy of group or subgroup.”

And to those who think that apocryphal hate screeds such as the anti-Semitic “Protocols of Elders of Zion” have no impact on American society, think again.

This week, in America’s nation’s capital (and my home) in the Washington DC area, once again a Jewish synagogue, in a DC area Maryland suburb, has been defaced with swastikas, slurs, and even death threats.

Hate is alive in America.

But so is Love.

We can choose which one that will be the compass for our lives and our interactions with other people.

The motto  of the Responsible for Equality And Liberty (R.E.A.L.) group is:

Choose Love, Not Hate – Love Wins.

NOTE: After Adolf Hitler’s Nazi Germany and the Holocaust, the united nations of the world gathered to develop a Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which was its own way of stating “Never Again.”   The Universal Declaration of Human Rights calls for freedom of religion, freedom of conscience, and freedom of worship – for EVERYONE.

Article 18 reads: “Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion; this right includes freedom to change his religion or belief, and freedom, either alone or in community with others and in public or private, to manifest his religion or belief in teaching, practice, worship and observance.”

Tennessee: Nazi White Supremacist National Socialist Movement to Rally August 14

Responsible for Equality And Liberty (R.E.A.L.) rejects Nazism, racism, and other hate, and we urge all those whose hearts are burdened with hate to choose love, not hate.

According to the Knoxville News Sentinel, the Detroit, Michigan-based, National Socialist Movement (NSM) Neo-Nazi group plans to hold a rally with the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) in Knoxville, Tennessee on August 14.

The August 14 event is being led by the NSM/Tennessee Unit of the Neo-Nazi National Socialist Movement (NSM), led by “Lt. Brian Culpepper.” According to the Knoxville News Sentinel report, the August 14, 2010 applicant was Brian Culpepper, who is describing the event as an “anti-amnesty” rally to urge Tennesseans to create a law “tougher” than Arizona’s new immigration law.

NSM’s Brian Culpepper told the Knoxville News Sentinel he expects both Ku Klux Klan members and “various other factions of the white nationalist movement.”

The August 14 Neo-Nazi event is to be held at Knoxville Market Square with a walk and further rally on the steps of Knox County Courthouse.  Another group is planning a counterprotest.

The Neo-Nazi NSM group is encouraging Tea Party members to see them first hand, stating: “Tea Party patriots and those that have not seen the NSM in person are encouraged to come and see firsthand what our people and our message really are. ”

The Neo-Nazi group states that groups involved in the August 14 event will include: “1. Brotherhood of Klans: Guest speaker Imperial Wizard Jeremy Parker, 2. United Knights TN. KKK, 3. SSAG: Guest speaker Ted Dunn, 4. U.S. Presidential Candidate Brian Holland… Among the featured speakers will be Commander Jeff Schoep and members of the Officer Corps.”

Security Services Action Group (S.S.A.G.) was one of the post-George Lincoln Rockwell neo-Nazi groups, which was reportedly associated with street violence in Detroit.  Virginia’s Brian Holland views himself as a “National Socialist” presidential candidate for 2012, and Brian Holland calls himself a “Majority Rights Activist.”

Jeff Schoep has led the Nazi, Hitlerite National Socialist Movement (NSM) for years.  The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) quotes Jeff Schoep as stating: “The Constitution was written by white men alone. Therefore, it was intended for whites alone… When you put on your NSM uniform, you are not just representing the NSM but all National Socialists that fought and died for our Race and our Cause! You are showing the Jews and the rest of the world that our Fuhrer is not forgotten and that his life’s struggle was not in vain… All non-White immigration must be prevented. We demand that all non-Whites currently residing in America be required to leave the nation forthwith and return to their land of origin: peacefully or by force.”

The Midland Messenger reports that a coalition of Neo-Nazis, white supremacists, and the racist “Christian Identity” movement plans to hold an event at the steps of the Midland County Courthouse on July 31, and that the event is being promoted on the “white nationalist hate group” Stormfront. They report that members will include the Ku Klux Klan (KKK)’s Randy Gray, Nazi National Socialist Movement group’s Jeff Schoep, Christian Identity movement’s James Wickstrom. The united efforts by the racists and Nazis in joint rallies reflects a growing trend of racial hate groups in shared coalitions.

The Ku Klux Klan’s Randy Gray was reportedly a member of the Ron Paul presidential campaign in Michigan in 2008. KKK activist Randy Gray has been involved in promoting white supremacism in Midland, Michigan as previously reported by the Midland Daily News, where Randy Gray told the Midland Daily News that he was a member of the Ku Klux Klan and had a protest in KKK robes the day after the election of Barack Obama.  He has also reportedly spoken at a white supremacist event in Kalamazoo.

Randy Gray has also promoted white supremacism in other parts of the country including leading an event in Tennessee.  At the Tennessee event, Randy Gray reportedly promoted the “Color of Crime” book promoted by New Century Foundation / American Renaissance.  The American Renaissance has unsuccessfully tried to hold a national convention in the Washington DC area to promote its views on race.

Jeff Schoep has led the Nazi, Hitlerite National Socialist Movement (NSM) for years.  The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) quotes Jeff Schoep as stating: “”The Constitution was written by white men alone. Therefore, it was intended for whites alone… When you put on your NSM uniform, you are not just representing the NSM but all National Socialists that fought and died for our Race and our Cause! We demand that all non-Whites currently residing in America be required to leave the nation forthwith and return to their land of origin: peacefully or by force. ”

The SPLC  states that “James Wickstrom may be America’s hardest-line preacher of the racist and anti-Semitic theology of Christian Identity. Known for violent, raging sermons that call for extermination of “the Jews,” Wickstrom, who has an extensive criminal history, has been preaching his hatred since his involvement in the 1970s with the anti-Semitic and antigovernment Posse Comitatus.”

The SPLC quotes James Wickstrom as stating: “I’d like to see these Jews all be brought to the VA [Veterans Administration hospital] and wooden chairs be put down on the lawn. Tie the Jews in. Bring these veterans down who have been mutilated … and give them baseball bats and let them beat these Jews to death! Every one of them! Take these chairs and Jews after they’re beaten to death, throw ’em in the wood chipper! And from the wood chipper let the remains go into a big incinerary [sic] truck, which is right behind the wood chipper, and give them the holocaust they rightly deserve!”

The SPLC quotes James Wickstrom as stating: “I have a dream! If that goddamn n**ger can have a dream, I can have a dream, too. I have a dream that in the days to come there won’t be anyone who isn’t white that’s gonna be in America!”

The Midland Messenger report on the planned July 31 white supremacist / Nazi event that “A post on Stormfront, a website for neo-Nazis and white supremacists, announces a July 31 rally on the steps of the Midland County Courthouse. Scheduled to speak is Randy Gray, who was elected as a GOP precinct delegate in 2008. He was stripped of that position after he showed up the day after the election on the streets of Midland in his KKK robes protesting the election of Barack Obama. Also scheduled to speak is James Wickstrom, a longtime member of the Christian Identity movement. Wickstrom claims that only white people were created in the image of God and only white people have souls. He also claims that Jews are the ‘children of Satan’ and that white, Western Europeans are the true Israelites favored by God. Wickstrom lives in Rhodes, Michigan. A third speaker is Jeff Schoep, ‘commander’ of the National Socialist Movement which has its headquarters in Detroit. His organization wants a United States made up only of those with ‘pure White blood’ — and no Jews or homosexuals allowed. And although Schoep claims that his group is non-violent, their party platform demands that ‘all non-Whites currently residing in America be required to leave the nation forthwith and return to their land of origin: peacefully or by force.'”

Scotland: Shock after Nazi sign appears at Stonehaven
— Scotland Press and Journal: “An investigation has been launched after a Nazi sign was erected in a north-east town. The sign, which was placed near a group of travellers who have pitched up in caravans next to Stonehaven’s open air pool, read ‘Nazi Gathering’ and displayed a swastika.”

Stop Islamization of Europe (SIOE) Protest Attracts Nazis

A group in the United Kingdom and Europe that is protesting mosques is the “Stop Islamization of Europe” (SIOE) group. The slogan of the SIOE group is that “Islamophobia is the height of common sense.” In the United Kingdom, the SIOE has had two protests in front of Harrow Central Mosque in September 2009 and December 2009. In the September 2009 SIOE protests at the Harrow mosque, there was violence between supporters and counter protesters, as SIOE protest supporters went to the mosque chanting “Muslims out.” In the December 2009 SIOE protest at the Harrow mosque, the SIOE reportedly refused the opportunity to dialogue with leaders of the Harrow mosque.

The SIOE group also has other European divisions, as well as a sister group in the United States, the “Stop Islamization of America” (SIOA) group. One of these groups is the ‘Stop Islamiseringen af Danmark’ (SIAD) division in Denmark.

We are also concerned about the May 21, 2010 protests by the Stop Islamisation of Europe (SIOE) against a mosque in Aalborg, Denmark titled “no mosques in our streets.” The Aalborg SIOE/SIAD protest led by SIOE leader Anders Gravers was targeting a mosque in Aalborg because of reports that the mosque’s imam supports genital mutilation of women.

Responsible for Equality And Liberty (R.E.A.L.) shares the concern of challenging those who support abuse against women or any abuse of our universal human rights. But we understand that two wrongs do not make a right, and that seeking to protest houses of worship is not the way to gain the support of others on human rights issues. In fact, protesting houses of worship is a sure way to attract those committed to hate and violence.

The May 21, 2010 SIOE/SIAD march’s chant, however, was not about women’s human rights, but was to call for “no mosques in our streets.” Not surprisingly, we learned that the May 21, 2010 SIOE/SIAD protest was then joined by individuals representing a Nazi organization. TV2 NORD reports that the Nazi organization DNSB (Danmarks Nationalsocialistiske Bevaegelse – Danish National Socialist Movement) joined the SIOE/SIAD protest at Aalborg against the mosque, and the Nazi protesters were led by Daniel Carlson.

According to TV2 NORD, the Nazi DNSB group sought to raise its own banner with the Nazi swastika as part of its participation in the SIOE / SIAD protest against the Aalborg mosque. An embarrassed SIOE leader Anders Gravers then sought to remove the Nazi swastika banner from the protest march, which led to a scuffle.

Denmark: SIOE/SIAD March "No Mosque in Our Streets" Leads to Support and then Confrontation with Denmark Nazi Group
Denmark: SIOE/SIAD March "No Mosque in Our Streets" Leads to Support by and then Confrontation with Denmark Nazi Group when Nazi Swastika Banner Raised

Certainly, anyone who has ever been involved with a public activity or protest is aware of the challenges of unwelcome participants who may seek to “hijack” an event. However, the lesson that SIOE should have learned is that its messages that “Islamophobia is the height of common sense” and “no mosques in our streets” are viewed as messages that Nazi groups can support. This is why those who challenge religious extremist and anti-human rights activities must have a human rights message, human rights leadership, and human rights consistency, that groups like the SIOE and the EDL will never offer the public.

What has the SIOE learned from this humiliating experience? Has it learned not to promote “Islamophobia”? Has it learned that hate only attracts hate? Has it learned that human rights issues cannot be addressed by promoting intolerance and hate? Unfortunately, all that the SIOE has learned is that it needs to have another protest against the Aalborg mosque because the May 21 march was not satisfactory. Like the EDL, the SIOE also has other protests against mosques planned for the summer of 2010, which it calls “hatecentrals,” while they cannot recognize the hatred in their own activities. SIOE plans another protest against a mosque in Copenhagen on August 28, 2010.

SIOE’s leader Anders Gravers, whose Denmark event attracted the support of the Nazi party, will also be coming to America to join in a New York City protest on June 6, 2010 against a mosque in NYC.

Human Rights Begins with Human Freedoms

The SIOE groups claims to be protesting such existing and planned mosques to protest “radical Islam” and on behalf of “democracy.”

But who is the “radical” when they seek to stop others from having freedom of worship? What are the “democratic” values in seeking to intimidate others from seeking the right to believe at mosques? How can anyone be promoting human rights by seeking to deny freedom of conscience at a house of worship?

Since many such protesters claim to be Christian, what type of example do they think they are setting for those oppressed Christians in other parts of the world whose churches are regularly protested, worship services disrupted, worshipers attacked, and even churches targeted for terrorism? Are they determined to prove that they can be just as intolerant and disrespectful of our universal human rights regarding other people’s freedom of religion?

Responsible for Equality And Liberty (R.E.A.L.) promotes freedom of religion, freedom of worship, and freedom of conscience as our unqualified, universal human rights. We challenge those who deny such universal human rights.

Religious freedom, freedom to worship, and freedom of conscience is defined in Article 18 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights: “Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion; this right includes freedom to change his religion or belief, and freedom, either alone or in community with others and in public or private, to manifest his religion or belief in teaching, practice, worship and observance.”

There is no caveat to these inalienable human rights, no asterisks, no qualifiers. Those who promote religious extremism of any kind may not respect these inalienable human rights. But those who reject, disrespect, and defy such universal human rights do not change the rights of all people, everywhere to such universal human rights.

If we are to defend such human rights, we must be consistent in our convictions for all people, not just for some people. We don’t have to like others, agree with others, or support other faiths – to recognize that the only way to fight for human rights is to be consistent in defending human freedom for all people, everywhere. People that we like and people like us are not the only ones with a right to believe and a right to freedom of worship. People we don’t like and disagree with have a right to believe. We either support universal human rights or not – there is no “relative” human rights just for some people, some times, in some places. But remember, even if we choose not to support such universal human rights, all people will still be entitled to them.

People in every part of the world of every faith have a right to freedom of worship.

We cannot struggle for human rights if we do not acknowledge and respect such basic human freedoms.

We cannot build any consensus of humanity to effect change based on hate and violence.

Choose Love, Not Hate. Love Wins.
