The Civil War of American Christians Against Extremism – The Lessons for Muslims Today

Today, a Muslim friend asks the question to American Christians: “Christians, since you haven’t been able to get rid of these terrorists, how do expect Muslims to get rid of ISIS?” The posting is accompanied by a photograph of members of the Ku Klux Klan with an American flag. Having fought this battle against white supremacists for 40 years, I want to reply.

Yes, it is a fair question.

But let us be clear, we will never simply “get rid of” all terrorists. That is not the real challenge we face. When we are challenging ISIS, we not simply “getting rid of” some terrorists, we must challenge and defeat the extremist ideology that it represents, and its views that members of its hate movement are superior to other human beings. We are challenging the views that its ideology has a right to deny life, liberty, security, human rights, and human dignity, to those who have different views or a different religion than the ISIS supporters. We do not fight simply a “war on terror.” – We have a war on terrorist and anti-human rights IDEOLOGIES themselves.

The United States of America has had a long, bloody, and painful war against the anti-human rights and terrorist ideology of white supremacy.

This war started at the founding of the country in July 4, 1776, but it was postponed in the interests of fighting what we thought at the time was a greater enemy. The war against such extremist views did not go away, and it returned again to haunt the conscience of the nation, over and over, until it spilled out into a national Civil War, which ripped the nation apart between April 12, 1861 – May 9, 1865.

The Civil War deaths in this battle on white supremacism resulted in the death of 214,938 soldiers and approximately 750,000 total U.S. deaths. Of the soldiers who died, 140,414 Union soldiers were killed, giving their lives in a national war against white supremacist slavery. The question is asked, “Christians, when will you get rid of white supremacist terrorists?” The answer can be partly found in Arlington National Cemetery where you can see the graves of the thousands who fought and died to stop such terrorism.

Let us also be clear, the Confederate States of America (CSA) army and its supporters also had many supporters who believed that they too were following a Christian path. But the Union American Christians could not accept such a contradiction of white supremacist slavery with the values of America, the freedoms the nation represented, and the contradiction of the majority of Americans who followed the Christian religion.

This was not just a Civil War of Americans.

It was also a Civil War of American Christians.

It is a historical guide to those fighting extremists among them, as to how to defy and challenge those who would use supremacism in their identity group and their values as a rationalization to persecute and oppress others.

In the secular United States of America, many would not immediately consider the American Civil War of the 19th century as a “Civil War of American Christians.” But this was a significant aspect of the American Civil War struggle, the Civil War between Christian defying white supremacy and those defending such an ideology to rationalize continued slavery of African-Americans. As history has shown, American Christians fought this war at great sacrifice and great bloodshed. But while the United States of America fought this Civil War as a secular nation, with people of all faiths involved, it would be naive especially in 1865, to not recognize that this was also a great American civil war in determining how Christian faith would be practiced in America, and what that American practice of Christian faith would and would not accept.

Most of the American Union soldiers fighting against the ideology of white supremacy were Christians, and the common rally song to defeat the white supremacist terrorists, was a song called the “Battle Hymn of the Republic.” The national battle hymn is clearly a Christian song. It concludes with the Christian exhortation to those fighting in the Civil War against white supremacy – “As He died to make men holy, let us die to make men free.”

This Battle Hymn of the Republic was written by Julia Ward Howe, in Washington D.C., not far from where Freedom Plaza stands today, as she toured Union army camps with Reverend James Freeman Clarke and her husband. The song of American Christianity fighting against the injustice of white supremacist slavery is one of the most fundamental songs of patriotism tied to American’s national capital. The Battle Hymn of the Republic was a national theme in fighting the CSA, and has remained the battle hymn in fighting white supremacy. It remains a standard patriotic song for all Americans and all branches of the U.S. Military Services.

So when the question is asked, when will Christians fight the white supremacist ideology of Ku Klux Klan terrorism, let us never forget that a nation rallied to do just that, and it even based its battle hymn on a Christian imperative to “make men free.” Americans, and certainly American Christians, changed as the result of that Civil War.

The Civil War against white supremacism was the 19th century “reformation” of the American practice of Christianity across the nation. But what Americans learned was that first Civil War was still not enough. We had to fight yet a second Civil War in the 20th century.

The aftermath of the Civil War against white supremacism led to uprising of CSA terrorist groups, chiefly one known as the Ku Klux Klan (KKK), which resulted in a series of Congressional civil rights acts, including the Civil Rights Act of 1871, signed by President Ulysses S. Grant who led the Union army to victory over the CSA. The KKK was created and recognized as a terrorist organization to continue the white supremacist activities of the CSA after its defeat. A series of terrorist prosecutions against KKK members largely defeated the 19th century version of the organization, which would not appear again until the 20th century.

But once again a second Civil War had to be fought in the 20th century, after the all of the changes by the first Civil War had failed to take hold in every part of American society. We realized that fighting white supremacy slavery, defeating the CSA and its views, defeating and imprisoning the KKK, all of these were not enough until we took hold of the extremist ideology of white supremacy itself and we declared total national war on it – everywhere and in every form.

This is the heart of the lesson which America learned, and can offer the world, in defying and defeating extremist views. No victory can begin until the extremist ideology itself is recognized, identified, challenged, defied, disgraced, and defeated.

In the 20th century, there were still parts of America, where rampant white supremacist-based discrimination permeated society and even the law, including legalized segregation in parts of the nation. There were unrepentant supporters of the CSA that sought to reconstitute the KKK, and used the frustrations of difficulties in economic and social issues, and economic depression to try to extend their ideological reach to other parts of the nation.

The CSA-based KKK continued to disgrace American Christians with their attempts to hold white supremacist rallies around a burning cross. But in the 20th century, after the resounding victory against the CSA in the 19th century, largely by American Christians fighting against white supremacy, no major no Protestant Christian denomination officially endorsed the KKK, and it was denounced in Christian publications. However, a 20th century “Civil War” was required to continue to battle this white supremacist scourge, which included defying at some local levels those misguided Christians who continued to support white supremacy, requiring a renewed effort by American Christians and other Americans to challenge the ideology of white supremacy again. This 20th century “Civil War” also saw the white supremacist KKK attacking American Catholics, which ensured that most in the Catholic Christian faith would renounce the KKK organization.

The 20th century Civil War was a different kind of struggle, which still involved troops, but not in the way of the 19th century Civil War. It was instead, a broader, all encompassing “total war” on white supremacy by American Christian and other Americans, as a “Civil Rights movement.” While much of the social struggle started in the 1920s, it returned in the 1950s and in the 1960s, primarily between 1955 and 1968, when I personally began my own fight against white supremacy.

This movement began with a focus on defeating the last remnants of white supremacy in what were called “Jim Crow” laws that legalized segregation between African-Americans and whites in America. We fought this in our schools, in our public places, and in every part of our nation, as a total war against white supremacy. We fought in every part of this nation, in a total war to defeat the evil of white supremacy. Our Supreme Court issued a ruling in 1954 in the historic Brown v. Board of Education, which declared all laws establishing segregated schools to be unconstitutional, and called for the desegregation of all schools throughout the nation.

In Little Rock, Arkansas, where this battle against white supremacy of our schools was first waged, President Eisenhower had to call out the U.S. National Guard to protect African-American students and protect them. It would not be the last time our troops were needed to fight such white supremacy. Our National Guard, as well as the U.S. Department of Justice, under President John F. Kennedy was also used to defy George Wallace in 1963, when he sought to refuse the desegregation of the University of Alabama.

But unlike the 19th century Civil War, the 20th century Civil Rights Movement was a total war led by the common men and women of America defying and defeating white supremacists. This included many churches, and the national leadership of the great African-American Christian leader Pastor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The struggle was long and tumultuous and in this civil war, there were still some recalcitrant local Christians who refused to accept the reformation of American Christian practices to ensure the equality of all people of all races.

But ultimately the forces of American Christian practice reformation achieved a significant victory and change in America, over white supremacy. Pastor King and those American Christians and other Americans who stood on the cause of equal civil rights for all prevailed. Segregation was defeated, laws were made to ensure equal voting protections and civil rights, and in state after state, city after city, the tide had changed in the 20th century Civil War.

The victories were not without costs, as Civil Rights activists were killed, by a new incarnation of the KKK. The criminals in the KKK committed atrocities, murders of Civil Rights activists, and even attacked and blew up Christian churches. In attacking churches across America, the “Christian” mask of their KKK anti-Christian views was now clear for all to see, and the nation rallied to defy the army of white supremacist hatred once again. We used every aspect at our disposal, our courts, our law enforcement, our federal law enforcement (including the Federal Bureau of Investigation), our schools, our newspapers, our churches, and people of all American faiths and conscience who marched and defied the evil of white supremacy.

For every march, rally, and public event which the world captured on film, there were millions of small “civil wars” taking place to end white supremacy in our homes, among families, among neighbors, at work, in public places, and among fellow citizens – who sought to remind America who and what we are. This fight was also a fight to seize and finally reform the practices of American Christianity to ensure equality for all, and was guided by the great Christian Pastor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Christian leader Dr. King led the greatest human rights rally in history on August 28, 1963 in Washington DC at the Lincoln Memorial, a memorial to remember the president who defied the white supremacy of the CSA in the 19th century Civil War. In Washington DC, nearby, what is today the Freedom Plaza, this Christian leader finished writing his speech, which he delivered at the Lincoln Memorial, and which would change the hearts of a nation and a generation. The speech was called “I have a dream.” (The speech is still there, buried in Freedom Plaza, today.)

It was a few years later that I began my own fight in this civil war for the American Christian faith and Civil Rights for all people. It was in August 1967 in the city of Virginia Beach, Virginia, where I found myself as young boy, confronting the obscenity of a sign which read “white clientele only.” One can read or hear of these things, and shake your head in disgust, but to be faced with it, changes your outlook on the world, and the need to fight for change.

I was greatly discouraged from challenging this practice of racial segregation. But I could not and would not back down. I was an American Christian, I knew this was wrong, it was wrong as a Christian, it was wrong as an American, and most of all, it was wrong as a human being.

I began my fight as a child. So when I hear my adult Muslim brothers and sisters in humanity asking me, “when will Christians defeat KKK terrorists,” I will tell you, I have and many I know have, fought such white supremacists all of our lives. We viscerally understand first-hand the disgrace and shame that these white supremacists have brought to our nation and to American Christians. So we know how it feels very much. But I also know that you are never too weak, too powerless, too ineffective to fight.

If a child can rise up to defy extremists, you can too.

This begins with deciding you simply will not accept it anymore. I don’t mean that you don’t want to hear it, or you don’t agree with it, not something passive like that. No. I mean you decide, you will not ACCEPT it any longer. THAT moment is when you begin the fight.

As we all know, Christian leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. paid for his defiance to white supremacy with his life on April 4, 1968, stricken down by a white supremacist assassin’s bullet. 10 days before Easter Sunday. I remember his loss as if it were yesterday. Many remember his birthday and honor his success. I also remember the day he became a martyr to free American Christians from the white supremacist hate which slurred Christians who have given their lives to good in this nation and around the world.

Dr. King did not live to see his successes. But he foresaw it coming, he stated the day before he died on April 3, 1968, “I’ve seen the Promised Land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the promised land!” His last words as a Christian leader fighting white supremacy were “Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord!!”

Yet some still believe that Christians have not struggled to defeat the evil of white supremacy.

It is an insult to injury in the never-ending attack by the evil of white supremacy that it too did not die on April 4, 1968, after it took the life of this great Christian leader.

Yet in the grief of those Christians who remember this leader, they too have to take their tiny feet, and try to walk in the massive footsteps of this great leader. We all are, of course, not sufficient to fill the shoes of such a great man, but we have the obligation as Americans, and for those who are Christians, yes, as Christians too, to soldier on.

We have continued the fight against white supremacy into the 21st century, and someone after I am gone will no doubt write about the continued civil war into the 22nd century too. There will always be hearts that hate. But unlike the views of some, my life has been shaped on the experience and personal knowledge, that, YES, you CAN change hearts. I thank God for that. Because while the scourge of white supremacy still exists, it is the exception, it is the rarity, and most of all, it is the SHAME in America. The reformation of American Christian practice on this matter is beginning to become complete on this.

That does not mean that there are not still white supremacy advocates who continue to challenge common decency, as well as the rag tag members of the CSA-inspired KKK, out of the 300 million plus Americans. But they are the vast exceptions.

In the 21st century, I created Responsible for Equality And Liberty (R.E.A.L.). One of our first major events was on April 4, 2010, where we remembered the martyrdom of Dr. Martin Luther, King, Jr. on the steps of the Washington Monument. On April 4, R.E.A.L. called for the freedom of those persecuted around the world, including African-Americans and people of color still facing pockets of discrimination, and calling for freedom of all people, including the end those religious minorities persecuted around the world, such as Pakistan Christians.

That same year, 2010, Washington DC faced yet another terrorist attack, this time on the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, which resulted in the death of an African-American security guard, which I had met in my visits there. This Washington DC terrorist attack spurred another of R.E.A.L.’s many campaigns for human rights, as we determined to defy such white supremacists inspired by such terrorism in our nation’s capital. As we have challenged more and more of the 21st century white supremacists, one thing is clear, they know that they are not welcome in Christianity. In the hundreds of battles that I have personally had with such white supremacists, it is very clear when we speak to them about their faith, most of them cannot accept the practice of Christianity with the hate of their extremist ideology.

Our God is marching on.

R.E.A.L. faced many threats from white supremacists as a result. I personally received many death threats. My family was affected (in ways I won’t discuss) by white supremacist attacks. As Americans and as Christians, we soldiered on. We defied white supremacist praise of terrorist attacks and calls for additional terrorism. We worked with the authorities to stop threats from materializing. We held protests in multiple states to challenge white supremacist groups. The white supremacists were not finished with me. They sought to slander me. They sought ruin me. They sought to attack me financially. They sought to bring legal action to stop me. But despite everything they tried, R.E.A.L. was not defeated.

R.E.A.L. carried on, on our own, without the help of any national group, because it was and is the RIGHT thing to do. We have challenged white supremacists for over 7 years now and we continue to do so today. We face contempt, we face hatred, we face mockery, and we continue to receive attacks. This website where you are reading this right now today has been a target of such attacks many, many times, including recently.

But we will soldier on. It is the right thing to do. It is the American thing to do. It is the Christian thing to do. Our struggle against the forces of white supremacy has not only been a cause for human rights, it is also a cause for Americans to help fulfill the mission of that great Christian leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to liberate all American Christian practices from such ideologies of hatred in every city, in every town, in every hamlet, and in every heart in America.

To the question “Christians, since you haven’t been able to get rid of these terrorists, how do expect Muslims to get rid of ISIS?,” the answer is by fighting against such evil every day of our lives. Yes, it is our job. Yes, it is our sacred RESPONSIBILITY. The answer is with ourselves.

How can we stop the forces of extremism and evil? By deciding that, we are obligated and responsible to defy their ideology and actions which would harm our fellow human beings.

We have difficult days ahead. But we have faced difficult days before, we have faced heartbreak before, we have had our martyrs before. We did not extinguish our watch-fires, and the light of the truth did not blow out. The gale winds and forces of evil have tried their hardest, but the light of truth remains burning bright. In that light, we must find the courage of acting in faith to stop the supremacist views of those who believe they are entitled to superior rights than others, they are entitled to acts of hate against others, and that they are entitled to violence against others, who they view as inferior human beings. To anyone of faith, God did not make inferior human beings. If we don’t know where to start, let us start right there.

People of all faiths must reject those supremacist views that diminish and degrade our fellow human beings, who are different, as somehow inferior. We can never fight for justice without fighting for freedom. We can never achieve liberty for any group, without respecting equality for all groups. We must accept our responsibility to struggle for such equality and liberty, not just for those like us, but most importantly for those who are different than us. We show the courage of our convictions by consistency in this struggle.

We are all God’s people. We all deserve the opportunity to share in God’s promises. We cannot achieve this by expecting someone else to lead the way. We are the pathfinders to dignity, we are guides for hope, we are the beacons for justice. We have already have the map to righteousness; it is imprinted on our hearts and our souls. We only need to open ourselves to the truth and lead the way.

You will see, the watch-fires are waiting in camps of those fighting the same struggle around the world. You just need to decide to JOIN the battle with your whole heart, and never look back.

March 17, 2016 Genocide Declaration on ISIS and Call for Immediate Halt to Any Pakistan Christian Refugee Deportations from Thailand

March 17, 2016 Genocide Declaration on ISIS and Call for Immediate Halt to Any Pakistan Christian Refugee Deportations from Thailand

On March 17, 2016, the United States of America State Department declared that persecution and violence against minority Christians by the international ISIS (aka IS, ISIL, Daesh) movement was designated as “genocide” and “crimes against humanity.”

Given the continuing threat of such genocide and crimes against humanity in the greater Middle East, including ISIS growth in the nation of Pakistan, human rights and non-governmental organizations, and friends of the United Nations and the Kingdom of Thailand, are calling for the Thailand government to immediate halt any plans for the deportation of any Pakistan Christian refugees from Thailand to Pakistan, where the forces of ISIS are increasing in number and influence.

Human rights and non-governmental organizations also call for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Thailand office to immediately re-assess any Refugee Status Determinations (RSD) denied to such Pakistan Christian refugees, and to immediately halt any activities leading to deportation, which could expose such refugees to the threat of growing genocide in the region. We call for the UNHCR Thailand to grant such refugee candidates new RSD hearings, while their cases are re-assessed to determine if they are in alignment with Refugee Resettlement Handbook requirements, and to assess the growing risk of denying refugees protection from those supporting genocide of such religious minorities.

The growing threat of genocide must be a matter for serious consideration by all organizations, nations, and individuals of conscience. This is further complicated by existing institutional persecution of Pakistan Christians and other religious minorities, including to the “blasphemy laws,” which has been condemned in reports by the United Nations (Report of the Special Rapporteur on the independence of judges and lawyers, Gabriela Knaul, 2012, UN Doc.A/HRC/23/43/Add.2, para 57, p. 13), and in the November 2015 report by the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ), provided to the UNHCR and the Kingdom of Thailand government. In the United Nations report, the United Nations Special Rapporteur has stated “the blasphemy laws are abused to target Christians.”

The state of persecution has allowed the growth of the ISIS terrorist movement to spread and expand, not only from its current genocide in Syria and Iraq, but also to expand with the nation of Pakistan.

On March 2, 2016, the Associated Press stated that: “Here in Karachi, Pakistan’s largest city, IS loyalists have set up their strongest presence, carrying out multiple attacks in the past year and setting up networks.” On February 10, 2016, Pakistan media The Nation reported that “Giving a briefing to the Senate Standing Committee on Interior about Intelligence Bureau’s counter-terrorism operation, the Director General of the country’s top civilian intelligence agency said Daesh is emerging threat in Pakistan as all other militant groups have soft corner for it.” On February 18, 2016, the Diplomat reported: “The Director General of Pakistan’s Intelligence Bureau (IB), in a recent testimony given before a Senate committee, admitted that the Islamic State (IS) was posing a serious threat to the security of the country.” On February 11, 2016, the Nation reported that: “Intelligence Bureau Director-General Aftab Sultan yesterday testified before a Senate committee that hundreds of fighters from Pakistan were joining” the ISIS movement. On November 10, 2014, ABC reported that “DAISH claims to have gathered 10-12 thousand followers from Hangu and Kurram Agency.”

We have already seen repeated ISIS terrorist attacks against religious minorities in Pakistan. Given the environment of persecution of religious minorities and the rise of an international movement seeking genocide against Pakistan Christians and other religious minorities, we call to conscience of the Kingdom of Thailand and the UNHCR that it would be wrong to deport such religious minority refugees back to be endangered by the growing forces of genocide.

The UNHCR must respect the challenge of genocide, in accordance with the United Nations international commitment to the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, adopted by Resolution 260 (III) A of the United Nations General Assembly on 9 December 1948. We urge the UNHCR Thailand office to make decisions on Pakistan Christian and other religious minorities, not to endanger them to the ISIS and other extremist forces of genocide. With the March 17, 2016 designation of ISIS genocide of Christian minorities by the U.S. Department of State, we urge the UNHCR to re-assess refugees coming from areas where ISIS threats are growing against such refugees.

Furthermore, we note the statement, also today, March 17, 2016, by United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon: “Human rights abuses by violent extremists directly assault the UN Charter and the Universal Declaration on Human Rights.” We agree and urge that all refugees endangered by such violent extremists get equal protection, including the Pakistan Christian refugees and Pakistan religious minority refugees who have fled to Thailand.

The Kingdom of Thailand also has a history of ethical stands of conscience, in accordance with its national respect for human rights, as well as international law which it supports. Such commitment to ethical stands on human rights has included the Kingdom of Thailand signature of the 1998 Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court on October 2, 2000. It has included the Kingdom of Thailand signing the Geneva Conventions I through IV, since December 29, 1954. The Kingdom of Thailand voted to adopt the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) on December 10, 1948, and has been a signatory to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) since October 29, 1996.

The Kingdom of Thailand’s ethical stand against the common enemy of terrorism includes being a signatory to numerous international acts renouncing terrorism, including the: Convention Against the Taking of Hostages 1979, Convention for the Suppression of Terrorist Bombings 1997, Convention for the Suppression of the Financing of Terrorism 1999.

We call for the UNHCR Thailand office and the Kingdom of Thailand to respect the full impact of this designation of ISIS genocide and crimes against humanity for Christians and other religious minorities. We urge them do not permit the endangerment of Pakistan Christians and other religious minorities who have fled to Thailand from persecution in Pakistan, and where the ISIS forces of genocide are growing every day.

Thailand: Pakistan Christian Refugee UNHCR Urban Verification Cards

On March 11, 2016, Responsible for Equality And Liberty (R.E.A.L.) founder Jeffrey Imm spoke with the UNHCR Thailand office Senior Protection Officer on the plan for 2016 UNHCR Urban Verification cards. This public statement is to provide a summary of the discussion for asylum seekers and refugees in Thailand, including Pakistan Christian asylum seekers and refugees, whose human rights have been supported by a number of organizations, including the Pakistan Christian Congress, British Pakistan Christian Association, R.E.A.L., and many others.

On February 12, 2016, R.E.A.L. and the Pakistan Christian Congress met with the Thailand Embassy in Washington DC and expressed our concern about the arbitrary arrest of Pakistan Christian asylum seekers and refugees who were waiting for refugee status determination decisions. It was expressed by the Thailand government that they understood our concerns and wanted to work to make improvements on this issue, as well as ensuring bail opportunities for any refugees arrested by immigration authorities.

R.E.A.L. learned this week that the UNHCR Thailand and the Thailand government held talks and agreed to introduce new UNHCR digitized Urban Verification cards to refugee applicants in Thailand, including Pakistan Christian refugees, as a method to more effectively identify such refugees to Thailand immigration authorities.

R.E.A.L. followed up in a telephone conversation with UNHCR Thailand on March 11, 2016 regarding the UNHCR Urban Verification cards. The purpose of R.E.A.L.’s discussion with UNHCR Thailand was to discuss the interests and concerns of refugees on the new Urban Verification cards, so that R.E.A.L. could provide a public statement to such refugees on this.

R.E.A.L. was told by the UNHCR Thailand Senior Protection Officer that the goal of these UNHCR Urban Verification cards are to provide a more consistent and reliable means for the Kingdom of Thailand immigration authorities to verify the identify of such refugee applicants, as opposed to only using the older paper-based UNHCR certificates. R.E.A.L. was told that the Thailand immigration authorities would more readily recognize the UNHCR Urban Verification cards as more genuine identification papers, which could be readily verified, along with biometric information on the card (photograph, fingerprint, iris scan).

R.E.A.L. was told the intent of such UNHCR Urban Verification cards is to ensure more verifiable and clear refugee identification documents, as an improvement over paper-based UNHCR certificates, which can get worn and faded over time, and which may not be as readily recognized. In addition, paper-based certificates could be more easily forged, whereas the UNHCR Urban Verification Card will provide a more reliable source of identification to Thailand immigration authorities.

The new digitized UNHCR Urban Verification cards will also have a Quick Response Code (QR Code), which is a form of a matrix barcode. This will allow ready identity verification using scanning by mobile devices, such a mobile phone.

R.E.A.L. communicated concerns that were heard from some refugees based on a history of fear and persecution, and concern that new identification documents could be used to aid in deportation of refugees. UNHCR Thailand assured R.E.A.L. that was not at all the intention of the Urban Verification Cards, and that these cards were simply intended to provide a modern, reliable, and most importantly, verifiable, means of identification for refugees, wherever it was needed, and especially with immigration authorities.

In addition, R.E.A.L. also wants to clarify that Urban Verification Cards are not official Thailand Government identification cards; they are UNHCR identification cards. These cards are not a work permit, a visa, and they do not change the status of refugee applicants.

The UNHCR Thailand office expressed to R.E.A.L. that the Urban Verification Cards have been successfully used by refugees in other parts of the world. In July 2015, in South Sudan, 3,400 refugees received such digitized identity cards in Western Equatoria. Since the launch of such digitized identification cards in June 2014 in Africa for Congo, Central African Republic, and Sudanese refugees, 10,000 refugees have received such digitized identity cards.

The UNHCR wanted to deploy such Urban Verification Cards for refugees in Thailand to help address security and identification needs of both the refugees and Kingdom of Thailand. The objective of the UNHCR is to more widely utilize such digitized UNHCR Verification Cards in other areas as well.

Obtaining the UNHCR Urban Verification Cards is a mandatory requirement for asylum seekers and refugees. The UNHCR will call all asylum seekers and refugees for individual appointments during the period of March 14 through May 8, 2016. It will be the responsibility of asylum seekers and refugees to come to the UNHCR Thailand office with all family members on the date/and time of the appointment to obtain such UNHCR Urban Verification Cards.

Later in March, R.E.A.L. will also have a follow-up conversation with UNHCR Thailand on human rights issues, which we briefly discussed with the UNHCR Thailand office. It is R.E.A.L.’s understanding that the UNHCR has expressed the desire to work with the Thailand Government for improvements in the circumstances and freedoms of asylum seekers and refugees. R.E.A.L.’s position will remain our core focus on the protection of refugees’ universal human rights, based on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). R.E.A.L. is also working to achieve follow-up discussions with the Kingdom of Thailand.

By necessity, some details on follow-up discussions will need to remain between those involved, as understandings and joint efforts for productive change mature. R.E.A.L. will certainly work to publicly share any specific commitments to change that will make a difference in the human rights and lives of refugees.

R.E.A.L. wants to thank all of those who continue to work tirelessly to improve the human rights of Pakistan Christian refugees; any progress that is achieved is thanks to the tireless efforts around the world by you.

USA: “Sovereign Citizen” Bundy Terrorist Group Plans for Utah Insurrection, Possible Additional Takeover

Responsible for Equality And Liberty (R.E.A.L.) continues to report on the ongoing lawless activities of the “Sovereign Citizen” based terrorist group, led by Bundy brothers Ammon Bundy and Ryan Bundy.  R.E.A.L. has reported on the armed terrorist takeover of the Bundy-led group of U.S. Federal Government facilities and Malheur wildlife refuge outside of Burns, Oregon, and the growing numbers of “Sovereign Citizen” terrorist extremists that have arrived in convoys to assist and protect the core Bundy terror group.  The FBI has stated: “the FBI considers sovereign-citizen extremists as comprising a domestic terrorist movement.”  Law enforcement has issued videos to police on how to deal with such dangerous domestic terrorists, who do not respect law and order.   The Department of Homeland Security reported in a February 2015 report that it viewed the “Sovereign Citizen” or what it also calls “Sovereign Citizen Extremist” (SCE) domestic terrorists as a dangerous national threat.  The Homeland Security report, produced in coordination with the FBI, counts 24 violent sovereign citizen-related attacks across the U.S. since 2010.

R.E.A.L. had been also following the ability of the “Sovereign Citizen” terrorist extremists to travel outside of the Oregon U.S. Government (USG) facilities near Burns, and the lawless environment which has allowed these terrorists to travel to other cities, even other states, without an arrest warrant being served.  R.E.A.L. has learned that the Bundy-led “Sovereign Citizen” terrorist group has now been traveling to spread further insurrection against Federal Government law and order in Utah – 700 miles away from the site of their current terrorist takeover of USG facilities.   The new plots appear to incldue meetings reported between “Sovereign Citizen” terrorist LaVoy Finicum and a Utah representative of the “American Lands Council.”

R.E.A.L. has learned this included terrorist travel by LaVoy Finicum and Ryan Bundy from their terror siege in Burns, Oregon on an 11 hour, 700 mile trip (each way) to meetings in Cedar City, Utah.   There was no effort by law enforcement to serve any arrest warrant or to stop these armed men who have been holding USG buildings and facilities hostage during this 24+ hour, 1,400 mile travel.  A local writer in Utah, Chris Zinda, had his photograph taken with “Sovereign Citizen” terrorist LaVoy Finicum to provide proof that Finicum had gone all the way to Cedar City, Utah, without being stopped by law enforcement.

We have now learned that LaVoy Fincium, was accompanied by Ryan Bundy, in the trip to Utah.  Ryan Bundy is the terrorist who first threatened to “kill” those who tried to stop their takeover of Oregon USG building and facilities.  According to research in a report by Raw Story, LaVoy Finicum described his Utah trip as meeting with “county officials,” and he “claimed they met with county officials eager to engage in a similar standoff with federal authorities over public land ownership.”  Chris Zinda also reported that terrorist LaVoy Finicum spoke in Cedar City, Utah at a “local afternoon conservative talk radio show.”

In Utah, Chris Zinda alerted the FBI and law enforcement to the presence of the armed terrorist involved in the Oregon USG facilities armed takeover.  Law enforcement was not interested.   As Chris Zinda reports, “I stopped along the road on the way to school and called the FBI in Salt Lake. They took my information and number (naturally) and left it at that. I haven’t heard from them since.  Listening to LaVoy on the radio while again driving made my head spin. ‘What the hell? How can this be allowed?’ When I got to school, ‘LaVoy Finicum is in Cedar City at the radio station!’ I said to the 911 fella on the other end who responded, ‘So?’ Softening a bit after my explaining why so, he said, ‘There is no arrest warrant and we can’t do anything.’ ”

On his Twitter account, (since our mainstream media no longer reports on terrorism in America), Chris Zinda reports that “Iron County, Utah Commissioner David Miller says he & ranchers met Finicum on 1/13 recruitment trip to Cedar City.”   Terrorist LaVoy Finicum told the Oregon Public Broadcasting (OPB) that “He said he was meeting with people in Utah who also want more control over the federal lands in their county. ”  Finicum also told OPB that “he had no contact with law enforcement during the road trip, which he made with one of the other occupiers, who he also declined to name.”

Terrorist LaVoy Finicum stated on YouTube (starting at 7:10), “Yesterday, Ryan Bundy and myself left and slipped out of here, a few days ago, and went to another state, another county that is very strongly oppressed, not as bad as here, but  is ready to stand up and ask the Federal Government to leave their county.  So we were there to support and encourage that to happen.”

Iron County, Utah Commission David Miller is part of the American Land Council (ALC) and appears in their videos promoting their cause.  David Miller has also been involved in zoning of lands in Iron County to influence ownership rights.  The ALC group is led by Ken Ivory, with the goal to transfer public lands away from their rightful federal government ownership.

“Sovereign Citizen” Terrorist Ryan Bundy lives in Cedar City, Utah, and has previously been arrested by Iron County police.  Bundy had previously been arrested for a nuisance charge stemming from 2013 activities, and court activities on this have continued to be delayed, as of September 2015.  In January 2015, Ryan Bundy was also served an arrest warrant for resisting arrest.

In May 2014, Reuters reported that “Sovereign Citizen” terrorist Ryan Bundy led hundreds of extremists to directly challenge federal control of protected land in Utah, driving dozens of all-terrain vehicles into protected land in Recapture Canyon in Utah that is home to Native American artifacts and where such journeys are banned.

The current Finicum video indicates that the “Sovereign Citizen” terrorist group is planning further activities to reject the legal rights and authority of the U.S. Federal Government in Utah, likely in Iron County, and very possibly another takeover of USG buildings and facilities in Utah, similar to their current terrorist occupation of USG facilities in Oregon.

In the Utah Independent, Chris Zinda also reports that: “Rancher LaVoy Finicum and militia organizer Cope Reynolds were recently recruiting support among southern Utah ranchers to stop paying their grazing fees and to create a local militia so that national militias can come and protect them from the consequences of their actions. Finicum and Reynolds were with Cliven Bundy at the ‘standoff’ in April 2014, have been empowered, and appear to be attempting to capitalize on the momentum.  A Youtube video was posted by Finicum on Nov. 20, 2015 in which he says he had ‘been asked to speak at a meeting with some southcentral Utah ranchers.’ In the nearly 72 minute video, you can hear both Finicum and Reynolds plead their case to Utah ranchers that now is the time to stand up to the federal government.”

“Sovereign Citizen” Terrorist LaVoy Finicum Recruiting in Utah (Source: YouTube)

Chris Zinda also reported that “Cope Reynolds is a gun store owner from Show Low, Ariz. who is best known for his not selling weapons to anyone who supported President Obama in 2012, brags about not having or wanting liberal friends, and since has been a loud voice for the Oath Keepers, III Percent United Patriots, and the militia movement.  Reynolds rubs shoulders with the controversial Sheriff Richard Mack of the Constitutional Sheriffs and Peace Officers Association and, like Finicum and Bundy, believes the federal government has no legal authority but that that power rests with the local sheriff. Mack’s involvement in the Bundy standoff sparked controversy among the militia who were at the event, as he wanted to use women and children in the effort while others wanted to spark a revolution.”

The Anti-Government III Percent extremists and Oath Keepers have also been part of the Oregon extremist takeover activities, with convoys of armed Anti-Government extremists supporting the “Sovereign Citizen” terrorist group, roaming Eastern Oregon streets at will, without any consequences.

The “Sovereign Citizen Extremists” (SCE) seem to be actively “crowdsourcing” terrorism in the same way that ISIS has been doing, and now seeks to hold terrorist control of physical land, just like ISIS has been doing.  Such “crowdsource” tactics defy conventional counterterrorism defense practices of following well-structured and known terrorist cells, and seek recruitment of previously unknown actors to join the terrorist “movement.”  Further, the more success terrorist have in such “crowdsourcing,” the more effective such “crowdsource” recruitment efforts can be in inspiring disaffected individuals who might not previously known or considered supporting the terrorist group, and creating a false appearance of “legitimacy” to their cause.

In the 21st century, and especially given the vast and sweeping social media tools for reaching the public in 2016, relying on counterterrorism tactics from the 1990s as the primary solution for stopping “crowdsourced” terrorist activity would be in denial of the reality of our modern times and challenges.

France: ISIS Attack on Jewish Worshiper Outside Synagogue – Year After ISIS Attack on Kosher Supermarket

On January 11, 2016, world news reported across social media reported an attack on a Jewish worshiper Outside synagogue in the French city of Marseille. Police report that teacher Binyamin Amsalem was lightly hurt when a 16 year old teenager wielding a machete attacked people leaving a synagogue after morning prayers. Local reports state that the attacker threw the knife before fleeing the scene, and has since been taken into custody.  The victim, who was wearing a kippah, defended himself from the large knife with a Torah book on his way to synagogue.

France 24 News provides an update stating the Turkish/Kurdish teenage terrorist committed this terrorist attack on behalf of the ISIS terrorist group.  France 24 states: “A teenager who stabbed a Jewish teacher in the southern French city of Marseille Monday is a Turkish citizen of Kurdish origin who told police he attacked in the name of the Islamic State (IS) group, according to a prosecutor.  The attack, which left the 35-year-old teacher with an injured hand and shoulder, occurred in broad daylight in the south of the city, Marseille prosecutor Brice Robin told reporters Monday.”

In November 2015, France 24 News also reported another stabbing attack of a teacher at a Jewish school by an ISIS supporter in Marseille: “A teacher at a Jewish school in the southern French city of Marseille was stabbed on Wednesday evening by three people shouting anti-Semitic obscenities and expressing support for the Islamic State group, local authorities said. The attack on the teacher took place around 8:00 pm (1900 GMT) in the city’s 13th district, police prefect Laurent Nunez said. The 57-year-old victim, who was wearing a kippa, was attacked outside his home, a short distance from the school and synagogue complex, a source close to the investigation said.

ISIS Terrorist Group Promotes Oregon Terrorists and Anti-U.S. Government Campaign

Responsible for Equality And Liberty (R.E.A.L.) has learned that the extremists supporting the ISIS terrorist organization have a strategy to promote and incite further anti-government activism and violence in the United States of America.

The ISIS extremists are pleased and excited by the “mobilization of anti-government rebels” in Oregon and elsewhere, and is urging the ISIS “Baqiya Family” to use social media to incite more attacks on the U.S. government. The ISIS terrorist supporters are pleased to have the Bundy terrorist group and their supporters do their work for them to undermine U.S. government authority and take over government facilities.  ISIS supporters have been following the Anti-Government terrorist activities and gunmen throughout Oregon (ولاية أوريغون) by the Bundy and other Anti-Government extremists and terrorists.

R.E.A.L. has reported on the Bundy-led Anti-Government terrorist takeover of Federal Government buildings at the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in Eastern Oregon, the abandonment of enforcing federal law, and the subsequent growth of Anti-Government groups parading with automatic weapons through the streets of Eastern Oregon, with no consequences, and armed convoys surrounding the local court house to issue “resolution” on what the extremist demand.  This growing insurrection has been met with no resistance at all from the U.S. Federal Government, based on orders from the Obama Administration.

Insurrection-Eastern-Oregon-V2

The ISIS terrorist group seeks an opportunity to manipulate these Anti-Government extremists to damage and commit terrorist acts against the United States to further ISIS’s goals.   The calls for such ISIS manipulation by ISIS terrorists was issued by ISIS supporter called: “Abu Adriatic Irhabi (@AbuAdriatic). الإرهابي. Baghdad, Iraq,” whose Twitter account is now suspended.

Typically the ISIS terrorist supporting “Baqiya Family” uses Twitter and other social media to further their campaigns of terrorism against the United States, the West, and the rest of the non-ISIS world.  Now,  ISIS supporters want to use that social media infrastructure and experience in creating false names and accounts on Twitter and social media to further incite the anti-government extremist movement, to encourage more attacks on U.S. Government facilities, inspired by the “success” of the Bundy terrorist group takeover over refuge facilities in Oregon.

Arab-Bundy

The ISIS terrorist supporters seek their members to incite other “rebels through social media by posing as everyday Americans supporting their cause.” They are seeking to urge further hatred and violence against the American government in Oregon and other parts of the nation, and hope to incite further anti-government extremists to “degrade and destroy their corrupt, evil, and oppressive government, or at least severely damage its operations.”  The ISIS terrorist supporters are hoping that “a mass mobilization of anti-government rebels could occur.  These rebels are trained in military experience and are trained in warfare.”

The ISIS terrorist supporters seek to use social media to manipulate Anti-Government extremist to commit specific terrorist attacks on U.S. infrastructure, stating: “Give them ideas for warfare, strategies, tactics.” “Suggest targets for them.”  “Focus on economic, infrastructure, and government institution targets.”

The SITE Intelligence Group referenced transcript of the Baqiya Family call to use the Anti-Government extremist and terrorist activities also calls for ISIS supporters to infiltrate their ranks through racism, as well hoping to exploit racial divisions and anti-diversity sentiment among Anti-Government extremists to help in infiltrating into their ranks.

In a national media report by the Washington Post, information provided in research on ISIS extremist site by the SITE Intelligence Group (frequently referenced by R.E.A.L.) was shared with the national public in a news report: “Islamic State tries to use Oregon takeover to turn Americans against their government.”  In this report, it states a “Twitter posting addressed to members of the Islamic State community describes the ongoing occupation by armed rancher Ammon Bundy and his fellow activists as a “key opportunity,” and suggests that Islamists should do what they can to help them.  It urges sympathizers of the organization also known as ISIS and ISIL to encourage the Oregon protesters-using messages sent from accounts with American-sounding names-and to suggest more targets for future take-overs.  ‘A mass mobilization of anti-government rebels could occur,’ said the message, posted to the account of a self-identified Iraqi supporter of ISIS who calls himself Abu Adriatic Irhabi. ‘These rebels have military experience and are trained in warfare. They may be able to degrade and destroy their corrupt, evil, and oppressive government, or at the least severely damage its operations.’ ”

As part of a study on such extremist supporters of ISIS on behalf of the University of Waterloo in Canada, Amarnah Amarasingammay provides an explanation of the “Baqiya Family” and what it means to the social media connected supporters of the ISIS terrorist group and their ideology.

“I interview current and former fighters, the friends and family of these jihadist volunteers, and members of the close-knit transnational virtual community of Islamic State supporters. They call themselves the ‘baqiya family.’ Baqiya means enduring, and is often used as a war cry by members of the Islamic State.”

“The baqiya family is a deeply connected group of youth who find a sense of community and kinship online, particularly on Twitter. As one member of this family told me, ‘One of the prerequisites to be baqiya is to have your Twitter account suspended.’ You further indicate your loyalty to the family by supporting and reposting new Twitter accounts of individuals who are coming back from suspension. Surprisingly, the baqiya family is not exclusive to supporters of the Islamic State. Jabhat al-Nusra supporters are also welcome and the debates are vibrant. ”

Oregon Under Attack: Terrorists Lead Eastern Oregon Insurrection

In Eastern Oregon on Friday, January 8, 2016, a group of extremist supporters of the Bundy terrorist group began to flood into Harney County.  On Saturday, January 9, their extremist motives and support for the Bundy terror group is leading into a growing terrorist insurrection of the Eastern Oregon area around Burns, Oregon, with terror supporter surrounding the court house in Harney County on January 9 to provide a “resolution” of their demands.

Responsible for Equality And Liberty (R.E.A.L.) remains fully committed to rejecting all terrorist threats and attacks on the Universal Human Rights of all of our fellow human beings, including Americans.  In the United States of America, the U.S. Code of Federal Regulations defines terrorism as “the unlawful use of force and violence against persons or property to intimidate or coerce a government, the civilian population, or any segment thereof, in furtherance of political or social objectives” [28 C.F.R. Section 0.85 (1) ].

Bundy-Terror-Group-Cover

As previously reported in Responsible for Equality And Liberty (R.E.A.L.)’s detailed report, the terrorist activities of the Bundy brothers-led group which began a week ago on January 2, 2016, when the brother Ammon and Ryan Bundy led a terrorist group in an armed takeover of U.S. federal government buildings at the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, south of Burns, which is operated by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, which includes the main office, a museum, and homes. The terrorists have also stationed armed extremists within the wildlife center’s watchtower to watch for law enforcement response to their crimes.   They have been accessing U.S. government computers, had access to employee information, identification cards, and they have made demands on their political cause to the U.S. Government over the past week.

As previously reported by R.E.A.L., the Bundy terrorist group has threatened violence, in addition to its violent takeover of the U.S. federal government facility.  Supporters of the Bundy terrorist group have threatened local members of the community, including death threats against the Harney County Sheriff, threats against his wife, slashing the tires of his wife, and stalking his elderly parents.  One of the Bundy terrorist leaders, Ryan Bundy, threatened to kill people.

With no Federal Law Enforcement defiance to a week of such criminal terrorist behavior, other supporters of the Bundy terrorist group have arrived to join them, and the terrorists have managed to gain more public and open supporters among local individuals, who are fearful of retaliation, since the U.S. Federal Government has determined to refuse to restore the rule of law in Oregon.  Reports were that terrorist supporters were allowed to come and go at will, additional family members joined the Bundy terrorist group, and others have been providing food and supplies to the Bundy terrorist group, with no one being arrested and no held accountable for their support for this terrorist group.  Internet social media took to making jokes about the terrorist group, but increasingly the joke has been on the Rule of Law, which has been completely abandoned in this part of Eastern Oregon and terrorists seem to be empowered to do whatever they want.  The source of the failure to act has been a decision by the White House not recognize this as “terrorism,” to abandon its responsibilities for federal facility protection to “local law enforcement,” and for the Obama Administration to order federal law enforcement not to have violent conflict with the emboldened terrorists.

As the Bundy terrorist group felt more empowered, it began dictating to the federal government that it sought transfer of the federal government land to the local government, and the terrorist group created a committee of local representatives that it claimed would oversee local governance.  The Bundy terrorist group “Harney County Committee of Safety” was named, and claimed that it had rights to local governance and drew its power from historical militias, including those they claimed were necessary to protect people  from “threats from the savages.”

On January 7, the Harney County Sheriff offered to provide “safe escort” of the criminal Bundy terrorist group if they would simply leave the small town area terrorized by the insurrection.  The Bundy terror group leader, Ammon Bundy declined the offer and insisted the terrorists would keep control of the U.S. Federal Government facility.   On January 8, the sheriff reported that he did not know when talks would continue.

On January 8, R.E.A.L. and other human rights activists warned the F.B.I. and other federal law enforcement authorities that other extremist groups supporting the Bundy terrorists were planning to join the terrorists’ movement, with a cover story that they planned to create a cordon to protect the terrorists from F.B.I. violence.  R.E.A.L. specifically warned the FBI and other regarding the plans of Pacific Patriots Network to come to the Burns, Oregon area, as initially and publicly announced by the III Percenters of Idaho president,  Brandon Curtiss.  R.E.A.L. obtained a report that Brandon Curtiss planned to protect the Bundy terrorist group by creating “a safety perimeter for the occupiers” (the Bundy terrorists) “so as to prevent a Waco-style solution from unfolding during this peaceful occupation.”  Brandon Curtiss, who is a former police officer, continued that his Anti-Government group sought to “bear witness to any aggressive action initiated by federal agencies” – Curtiss told Sam Bushman, an Anti-Goverment “Patriot” movement radio host, that his group helped organize the original Burns, Oregon protests before the Bundy terrorist armed takeover of the U.S. federal building, which Curtiss calls a “peaceful occupation.”  Our contact to law enforcement on this was not acknowledged.

The groups included the “Pacific Patriots Network,” which had publicly expressed support for the Bundy terrorists, although making a transparently obvious false claim that they sought the terrorist to “stand down.”   The Idaho-based “Pacific Patriots Network” (PPN) had stated: “We wish to establish a safety perimeter of protection for the occupiers so as to prevent a Waco-style situation from unfolding during this peaceful occupation. The primary intention of this outer-ring is to bear witness to any aggressive action initiated by federal agencies or the occupiers, and to encourage an open dialogue towards a peaceful resolution. ”

The PPN denied the Bundy group efforts were terrorism, and stated the armed take over of government buildings “[a]t this point in time this is no different than a sit in protest at a college.”  The real goal has been for the Pacific Patriots Network, the “Oath Keepers, and “III Percenters” (Three Percenters) network, whose anti-government goals have been to spread a more nationwide insurrection and to defy U.S. Government authority, whose slogan is “when tyranny becomes law, rebellion becomes duty.”

In the current efforts by the Pacific Patriots Network in support of the Bundy terrorist group, PPN leader Joseph Rice has been leading armed convoys throughout Harney County, taking over roads, and surrounding the Harney County Courthouse to provide a “resolution” to the Sheriff.

As the federal law enforcement has been ORDERED by the Obama Administration not to have any violent conflict with the terrorists, and the local law enforcement is significantly overmatched by the convoys of armed terrorists, a state of confused lawlessness is growing as the insurrection of Eastern Oregon grows.  Local media expecting some type of leadership on law order are left asking the general public basic safety questions, such as whether the road should be closed to stop convoys of armed Anti-Government and terrorist groups from flooding into the area.

Close-the-Road

Among the new armed convoys of Anti-Government extremists and terrorist supporters, PPN leader Joseph Rice (also an “Oath Keeper” leader) also led a “militia” effort in April 2015 in Josephine County, Oregon to defy Bureau of Land Management regulations over mineral rights in Galice Creek.  The “Oath Keeper” extremists were also a part of the armed groups at the 2014 Cliven Bundy protests in Nevada, where federal law enforcement surrender and withdrew.  Leaders of the Idaho-based anti-government extremists have made violent threats against the government before.  “Pacific Patriots Network” and “Oath Keeper” leaders have supported violent anti-government activities, including the 2014 armed threats against federal law enforcement in Nevada on the Cliven Bundy ranch (which went unpunished), and conflicts with the federal government in Oregon, Montana, and California.

Bundy Armed Terrorists and “Oath Keepers” Anti-Government Groups at Cliven Bundy Ranch in Nevada – Not One Was Arrested After Armed Threats Against Federal Law Enforcement in 2014

Among other supporters of such Anti-Government Three Percenters, this includes the November 2015 arrest of pro-Confederate Allen ‘Lance’ Scarsella, which R.E.A.L. reported on among the White Supremacist Terrorists who attacked a protest in Minneapolis, where five African-Americans were shot. R.E.A.L. assisted in providing information to the F.B.I. on that investigation.

Anti-Government supporters of the Cliven Bundy armed protest against police included killers Jerad and Amanda Miller; the current Oregon Bundy brother-led terrorist group was inspired by the failure of federal law enforcement to stop them in Nevada in 2014.  Jerad Miller was at the Bundy Ranch, where armed Bundy terrorists threatened law enforcement. The duo had professed strong support for Bundy, who had been cited for grazing his cattle on public land without a permit.  In June 2014, the Bundy Anti-Government couple led a killing spree in Las Vegas in a restaurant and a Walmart department store, ambushing and killing two police officers and killing another American civilian.  Jerad and Amanda Miller claimed they were “freedom fighters” hoping to spark an anti-government “revolution. After storming a restaurant and killing two police officers, Jerad and Amanda Miller placed a swastika and a ‘don’t tread on me’ flag on the officers’ bodies before going to Walmart and taking more lives. The two Anti-Government Millers were then killed by police.

Miller-Terrorists

In addition, the Political Research group reports on the history of violence and criminal behavior among the extremist anti-government groups: “Numerous arrests of Three Percenters and those who have shown affinity with them have been documented.” “Three Percenter Brad Bartelt threatened to detonate a homemade explosive on Arkansas State University’s campus in December 2015. Brandon D. Gibbs, who was heavily armed and armored when police arrested him in December 2014 for threatening a city official, also had shown an affinity for the Three Percenters. And in 2011, Frederick Thomas was arrested in Georgia as a member of a militia group, which ‘planned to attack cities including Atlanta with deadly ricin, bomb federal buildings and murder law enforcement officials and others.’  Thomas was allegedly inspired by Vanderboegh’s online novel Absolved; it describes a future confrontation where activists with Patriot movement views have a shootout with law enforcement and plan to murder government officials.”

Anti-Government terrorist Frederick Thomas and other ricin terrorist plotters sought to spread ricin across the Washington, D.C. area via airplane in a mass murder terrorist attack.

Despite this history of violence and terroristic behavior from such Anti-Government extremist groups and the armed threats against Federal Government law enforcement, the White House has decided to take a tepid response to the Bundy terrorist group activities in the current armed takeover of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in Oregon, as well as the new group of Anti-Government extremists pouring into Eastern Oregon from other parts of Oregon, Idaho, and other areas.

The tepid response from the White House to this armed insurrection and takeover of U.S. government facilities, was to deny that these Bundy gang that had taken over U.S. Federal Government facilities at gunpoint were “terrorists,” and to abandon the defense of Federal Government facilities as “ultimately this is local law enforcement matter,” while offering the FBI to provide help in investigation.  The White House has provided no comments or leadership in condemning or defying this terrorist takeover of U.S. Federal Government facilities.

Reuters has interviewed senior Obama administration officials, however, who state that they were ORDERED not to have any violent conflict with the terrorists.  In an article titled, “U.S. authorities under orders to avoid clash in Oregon stand-off,” it was reported that “Federal authorities in a stand-off with armed, self-styled militiamen in eastern Oregon have been told to avoid a violent confrontation, in line with official U.S. policy after deadly clashes in the 1990s, said three Obama administration officials.”  “The occupation’s leaders have issued recruiting calls on social media for more supporters, though it is unclear how many have joined so far. The Malheur occupation began as a march in Burns, Oregon about 30 miles (48 km) north of the wildlife refuge to protest Monday’s scheduled imprisonment of two ranchers convicted in 2012 of setting fires that inadvertently spread to public land. Two administration officials cited the peaceful resolution of a 2014 confrontation with members of the Bundy family as a successful precedent for a non-confrontational approach.”  In 2014, the Cliven Bundy family staged an armed defiance of federal government law enforcement authorities, and the Obama administration had the federal law enforcement give up and withdraw.  No charges have been made and no fines collected from the Bundy family.

Responsible for Equality And Liberty (R.E.A.L.) is stunned by the events over the past week in Oregon, which have been so fast moving that most of R.E.A.L. reports have been on Twitter and Facebook social media, as the blog format simply is not fast enough to keep up with the stream of breaking events.  R.E.A.L has been astounded at the weak response by the White House on this act of terrorism, and its lack of interest in defending U.S. Government facilities, property, and the people in the surrounding area.  R.E.A.L. recognizes and understands that all of the facts are not publicly known, but what R.E.A.L. has witnessed over the past week is inconsistent with the standards of law enforcement and the willingness to defy terrorism, which has previously (and in other cases today) been a hallmark standard of federal law enforcement.  Furthermore, the unwillingness of the President of the United States to make a strong and unequivocal statement in support of the rule of law, especially in the context of other recent “successful” terrorist attacks on the United States seems inexplicable to R.E.A.L.   R.E.A.L. hopes that the President’s position on this will change and soon.

Like everyone, R.E.A.L. hopes there will be a peaceful settlement to this.  However, the inspiration that the apparent weakness has given to ISIS and other terrorist groups across the United States of America and the world, remains a significant undermining of American support the rule of law and human rights.  In the words of that great Darfur human rights leader, Mohamed Yahya, while we all seek peace for all, we must remember “without justice, there can be no lasting peace.”

Responsible for Equality And Liberty (R.E.A.L.) stands in support of our universal human rights for all, and we stand in defiance against those, including terrorist and hate groups, which seek to attack such universal human rights, dignity, and security for all.

We cannot support human rights, if we also do not reject those who seek to rob our brothers and sisters in humanity of their lives and security, which are also our universal human rights.

ISIS: Egypt – Terrorists Kill Police and Military, Target Tourists

The ISIS terrorist organization has executed terrorist attacks on tourists and hotel facilities this week, and claimed responsibility for killing two Egyptian authorities on Saturday, January 9.   The ISIS terrorist attacks have both involved the Egyptian Giza area, which seems to be a place where ISIS terrorists are gaining recruits for their criminal activity.

On Thursday, January 7, 2016, ISIS terrorists took responsibility for an attack at the Three Pyramids Hotel, where a group of Israeli Arab tourists were preparing to board a bus.  The hotel was near the Pyramids of Giza in Cairo.  The ISIS terrorists group released a statement via the Amaq news agency claiming it was a response to Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi’s call to target Jewish people “everywhere.”

On Friday, January 8, 2016, a separate violent attack occurred in Egypt’s Red Sea resort town of Hurghada, at the Bella Vista Hotel in Hurghada, wounding three foreign tourists, two Austrians and a Swede.  International news media had reported that the violence was part of an “ISIS” attack.  However, the Bella Vista Hotel and local individuals state that such news reports are misinformation and that the violence in Hurghada, was not part of an ISIS attack, but was actually the work of “drugged young men.”  The Bella Vista Hotel states the news reports of an ISIS attack are “nonsense and crap”, and that it “[m]ost probably is to make propaganda that will affect the tourism in Egypt badly, and that was the main aim.”  If other local individuals have reports to add to this, please email R.E.A.L., with your on-site information.

The criminals used knives to injure the tourists.

The Independent reported that: “Renata and Wilhelm Weisslein, both 72, and Sammie Olovsson, 27, were not seriously wounded and are in a stable condition.”  Reportedly, the criminal held a knife to a woman’s throat, and injured her, but she survived the attack.  One of the attackers was shot.  Sammie Olovsson, from Gothenburg, wrote a Facebook status reassuring friends that although he had been stabbed four times, he was recovering and expected to leave hospital on Saturday.  “Lucky that I could avert some fatal stab wound to the chest, he tried to instead stick a knife in my neck a couple times, but it was just cut to the muscles, no arteries or nerves.  Was bloody lucky.  Can leave the hospital tomorrow.”

The Egyptian Interior Ministry had said that one of the attackers was a student from Giza.

The Bella Vista Hotel provided a report on Facebook, which states the attack in  Hurghada, was the activities of drugged young men.

On Saturday, January 9, 2016, the ISIS terrorist group took responsibility for the murder of two Egyptians Ali Ahmed Fahmy and Ramadan al-Burhami, who were killed as they were on their way to work in Giza’s Shabramant district, according to a statement by the Egyptian Ministry of Interior.  Egpytian officials state that police shot two attackers, killing one and wounding another. The ministry identified the slain attacker as 21-year-old Mohammed Hassan Mohammed Mahfouz, a student from Giza.  Reuters reported that the ISIS terrorist group claimed the terrorist attack using the messaging service Telegram.  The reports stated that one of the individuals was a “Colonel” and another a police officer, which has led to different news media reporting as killing of two police and other reports stating it was the killing of one police officer and one soldier.

On Janaury 9, 2016, Reuters also reported: “Egypt is fighting a wave of Islamist militancy against security forces which started in the remote regions of the Sinai, but is increasingly spreading closer to the capital and focusing on targets previously considered safe such tourist resorts on the Red Sea.”

R.E.A.L. recognizes that  people of Egypt have gone through traumatic years, and have faced turbulent times.   After the tyranny of Mubarak and many other social upheavals, the Egyptian people understandably have no interest in reports of extremist groups such as the ISIS terrorist group taking responsibility for violence in Egypt.   However, extremists give no quarter, no understanding, no patience to any nation, whether it Egypt, the United States of America, or anywhere in the world.  Our consistent defiance against the ideologies of extremist views is essential in the protection of our shared universal human rights.

American ISIS: Houston – Man Arrested for ISIS Support

On January 7, 2015, Omar Faraj Saeed Al Hardan, 24, a Palestinian born in Iraq, who came to the United States of America reportedly as a refugee, was arrested in Houston, Texas and charged with three counts of material support to the ISIS terrorist organization.  His indictment states that Omar Faraj Saeed Al Hardan entered the United States as a refugee on or about November 2, 2009.   It states that he lied on his naturalization form  about his associations with terrorist groups, and he also received machine gun training as part of travels with terror groups.

R.E.A.L. also has a report on Aws Mohammed Younis Al-Jayab arrested in Sacramento, California on a related case.

A separate Houston News Channel 2 television report states: “Channel 2 Investigates obtained the city of Houston limousine driver’s permit that Omar Faraj Saeed Al Hardan obtained in 2014. It lists him as a ‘legal resident.'”  Channel 2 also reported “Other arrests were made in Milwaukee in a separate but connected case, Channel 2 has learned. The Houston arrest is part of a federal terrorism-related investigation. Al Hardan is expected to face three federal charges, including providing support to terrorists.” “KPRC reported Thursday evening that the Texas suspect has lived in Houston for several years and was in contact with people in Milwaukee and Sacramento. The case involved plotting to get people currently in the United States moved overseas, specifically the Middle East.”

The Federal Bureau of Investigation reports:
Texas Man Charged with Attempting to Provide Material Support to ISIL

Omar Faraj Saeed Al Hardan, 24, a Palestinian born in Iraq, has been charged in a three-count indictment alleging that he attempted to provide material support to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), a designated foreign terrorist organization.

Assistant Attorney General for National Security John P. Carlin, U.S. Attorney Kenneth Magidson of the Southern District of Texas, Special Agent in Charge Perrye K. Turner of the FBI’s Houston Division and Special Agent in Charge Brian M. Moskowitz of Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) in Houston made the announcement.

The three-count indictment was returned on Jan. 6, 2016, and was unsealed today. He will have his initial appearance tomorrow at 10:00 a.m CST in Houston.

Al Hardan entered the United States as an Iraqi refugee on or about Nov. 2, 2009. He was granted legal permanent residence status on or about Aug. 22, 2011, and resides in Houston.

He is charged with one count each of attempting to provide material support to ISIL, procurement of citizenship or naturalization unlawfully and making false statements.

The indictment alleges that Al Hardan attempted to provide material support and resources, including training, expert advice and assistance, and personnel – specifically himself – to a known foreign terrorist organization. According to the allegations, he also knowingly responded, certified and swore untruthfully on his formal application when applying to become a naturalized U.S. citizen. He allegedly represented that he was not associated with a terrorist organization when, in fact, he associated with members and sympathizers of ISIL throughout 2014, according to the charges. The indictment further alleges that during an interview in October 2015, Al Hardan falsely represented that he had never received any type of weapons training, when he allegedly received automatic machine gun training.

The charge of attempting to provide material support to terrorists carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison and a maximum fine of $250,000. The charge of false citizenship procurement carries a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison (if the offense was committed to facilitate an act of international terrorism). The charge of making false statements carries a maximum sentence of eight years in prison. If convicted, any potential sentence will be determined by the court after review of factors unique to this case, including the defendant’s prior criminal history, if any, the defendant’s role in the offense and the characteristics of the violation.

An indictment is merely a formal charging document and is not evidence of guilt. Every defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

The charges are the result of an investigation conducted by the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force and HSI with the assistance of the Houston Police Department. Trial Attorney Kashyap Patel of the National Security Division’s Counterterrorism Section is prosecuting the case along with Assistant U.S. Attorney Ralph Imperato of the Southern District of Texas.

Sacramento: Man Arrested for False Statements, Support to ISIS Rival Terror Group

On January 7, 2015, Aws Mohammed Younis Al-Jayab, 23, a Palestinian born in Iraq, who came to the United States of America reportedly as a refugee, was arrested in Sacramento, California and charged with making false statements in a terrorist investigation. The U.S. Department of Justice states Aws Mohammed Younis Al-Jayab was a supporter of a terrorist rival group to ISIS, “Ansar al-Islam.”

His criminal complaint states that Aws Mohammed Younis Al-Jayab entered the United States as a refugee from Syria in October 2012.   It states that  “he remains in refugee status to the present date, and as such, he is subject to the jurisdiction of USCIS for  purposes of this offense.”  The criminal complaint states that Al-Jayab lied to the USCIS on whether he had been a member of or supported a “rebel group, militia, or insurgent organization.”   The criminal complaint states that he planned to return to Syria to support a terrorist group, either through   Al-Qaeda alias groups Jabhat al Nusrah (JAN) or  al Nusrah Front (ANF).

The U.S. Department of Justice reported:

California Man Arrested for Making False Statements in a Terrorism Investigation

A Sacramento, California, resident was arrested today on a federal charge of making a false statement involving international terrorism. Aws Mohammed Younis Al-Jayab, 23, is charged in a complaint that was unsealed today in the U.S. District Court of the Eastern District of California following his arrest. He will have his initial appearance tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. PST in Sacramento.

The arrest was announced by Assistant Attorney General for National Security John P. Carlin, U.S. Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner of the Eastern District of California and Special Agent in Charge Monica M. Miller of the FBI’s Sacramento Division.

“Aws Mohammed Younis Al-Jayab allegedly traveled overseas to fight alongside terrorist organizations and lied to U.S. authorities about his activities,” said Assistant Attorney General Carlin. “The National Security Division’s highest priority is protecting the nation from terrorism, and we will continue to hold accountable those who seek to join or aid the cause of terrorism, whether at home or abroad.”

“According to the allegations in the complaint, the defendant traveled to Syria to take up arms with terrorist organizations and concealed that conduct from immigration authorities,” said U.S. Attorney Wagner. “While he represented a potential safety threat, there is no indication that he planned any acts of terrorism in this country. I commend the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force for their dedicated work on this matter.”

“In today’s complex terrorism environment, our Joint Terrorism Task Force plays an important role in combating the threat of terrorism. The collaboration is stronger than ever and essential to protect our communities from harm,” said Special Agent in Charge Miller. “The public plays an equal, if not more important, role in protecting the community. We encourage those who encounter individuals who express an intent to do harm or claim allegiance to a terrorist group – whether in person or online – to voice their concerns to law enforcement.”

According to the complaint, Al-Jayab is a Palestinian born in Iraq, who came to the United States as an Iraqi refugee in October 2012. Between October 2012 and November 2013, while living in Arizona and Wisconsin, he communicated over social media with numerous other individuals about his intent to return to Syria to fight for terrorist organizations. In those communications, according to the complaint, Al-Jayab discussed his previous experience with firearms and with fighting against the regime in Syria. On Nov. 9, 2013, he flew from Chicago to Turkey, and then traveled to Syria. Between November 2013 and January 2014, Al-Jayab allegedly reported on social media that he was in Syria fighting with various terrorist organizations, including Ansar al-Islam, a designated foreign terrorist organization since 2004. He returned to the United States on Jan. 23, 2014, and settled in Sacramento.

The complaint alleges that on Oct. 6, 2014, Al-Jayab was interviewed by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services and responded in the negative to numerous questions, including whether he had ever been a member of any rebel group or militia; whether he had ever provided material support for any person or group engaged in terrorist activity; and whether he had ever been a member of a group, or assisted in a group, which used or threatened the use of weapons against others. Al-Jayab also allegedly stated during the interview that he had traveled to Turkey in late 2013 and early 2014 to visit his grandmother. The complaint alleges that all of those answers were materially false.

If convicted, Al-Jayab faces a maximum statutory penalty of eight years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Any potential sentence will be determined by the court after review of factors unique to this case, including the defendant’s prior criminal history, if any, the defendant’s role in the offense and the characteristics of the violation.

The charges are only allegations; the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

The ongoing investigation is being conducted by the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jill Thomas of the Eastern District of California and Trial Attorney Andrew Sigler of the National Security Division’s Counterterrorism Section.
