Remembering Beslan – Terrorist Crimes Against Our Children

On September 1, 2004, 770 children were kidnapped by terrorists in Russia in a small town of Beslan. It was a return to school for these children at Beslan School Number One; the event was celebrated as a “Day of Knowledge,” and parents accompanied their children in the joyous return to school. After lining up for photographs to remember the day, children entered the school. So did terrorists who rushed into Beslan School Number One, while the children were filing into classes. Many of the older children who saw the terrorists were able to flee. Most of those left behind were the smallest, youngest children, including parents with their babies. terrorists sought to lure back confused children, uncertain if they should flee, with candy.

Terrorists then forced 1,124 hostages into a small school gymnasium which was wired with explosives in the school’s basketball hoop and a dozen other bombs in the Beslan school; they mined the school with grenades, home-made explosives, and landmines, keeping the most powerful bombs in the gym where the children were kidnapped. Some terrorists also wore explosive suicide vests. They told the children that were going to die. In the small confined space, children suffered from heat and some were forced to strip naked from the heat. Without food and water for three days, some were forced to drink their own urine. The few male adults (including children’s fathers) also captured by the terrorists were forced to build fortifications in the school for the terrorists; then they shot them and dumped their bodies out a school window. The terrorists recorded a video of their atrocities (shown in the film “Three Days in September”), laughing and proud of what they had done.

On September 3, 2004, after three days of being terrorized by these terrorists, 186 of these children were killed, some killed by terrorist bomb explosions, some shot in the back by terrorists. Some fled from the schoolhouse streaked with blood as the terrorist bomb explosions brought the Russian military into a firefight with the terrorists. Many more children were injured, lost limbs, and were seriously wounded physically and emotionally. By September 4, 2004, children’s bodies were lined along the ground outside the Beslan school house, plastic bags covering the bodies, as mothers and fathers sought to find their lost children to know if they were among the dead or wounded evacuated to hospitals. The children had just been going to school. It was a day just like today.

Days after the Beslan atrocities by terrorists, some believed that the magnitude of the atrocity against helpless children would rouse the sleeping conscience of civilization. The London Times’ William Rees-Mogg stated on September 4, 2004 that “Beslan is Russia’s 9/11: it will change the world,” stating that:
“One must not underestimate the sheer impact of the horror of the event itself. It is something people find very hard to contemplate. The people who planned this massacre are every bit as evil as the people who planned Pearl Harbor or 9/11, or as the SS men who ran Auschwitz. There is a blank horror about what they did to young children which fortunately has few parallels in the history of evil. It is important to hold onto that because the world’s sense of horror will influence everything that will follow.”

But in fact, the terrorist atrocity against Beslan’s helpless children did not “change the world,” or even wake up many of the so-called “foreign policy experts” who live in denial on the ideology of terrorist hate.

GWU Counterterror Program Hires Convicted Terrorist Supporter who served Partial Prison Sentence

The George Washington University (GWU)’s Center for Cyber and Homeland Security (CCHS) has hired a convicted terrorist supporter, whose terrorist website promoted Al Qaeda, Taliban, Osama Bin Laden, Anwar Al Awlaki, and others, and who was actively involved with U.S.-based terrorists planning attacks on the United States. The GWU CCHS Program on Extremism (POE) hired this convicted terrorist supporter, slightly over a year after he made a May 2015 announcement of his early release from prison.

The new GWU counterterrorism analyst, Younus Abdullah Muhammad, aka Jesse Morton, was released after serving only 3.5 years of a 12 year prison sentence for promoting terrorism, including promoting terrorist attacks on U.S. soldiers and involvement with individuals plotting terrorist attacks in the United States homeland on the Pentagon, the Capitol, and individuals threatening attacks on U.S. television writers. He was convicted of “conspiracy to solicit murder, make threatening communications, and use the Internet to place others in fear.”

Seamus Hughes, deputy director of the GWU’s Program on Extremism at the CCHS, told CNN that the convicted terrorist Younus Abdullah Muhammad brings a “unique perspective.” Nearly 15 years after the 9/11 attacks in 2001 on the United States, Mr. Hughes also stated that “we haven’t figured out how to reach that individual who’s going down the path of radicalization.”

Per the FBI’s February 9, 2012 press release, Younus Abdullah Muhammad operated “Internet platforms and websites to encourage Muslims to support Usama bin Laden, Anwar Al Awlaki, al Qaida, the Taliban, and others engaged in or espousing violent jihad.”

The FBI stated in 2012 that: “‘Jesse Morton operated Revolution Muslim to radicalize those who saw and heard his materials online and to incite them to engage in violence against those they believed to be enemies of Islam,’ said U.S. Attorney MacBride. ‘We may never know all of those who were inspired to engage in terrorism because of Revolution Muslim, but the string of recent terrorism cases with ties to Morton’s organization demonstrates the threat it posed to our national security. We’re grateful to the FBI, NYPD, and their law enforcement partners throughout the world who made today’s conviction possible.'”

The FBI press release also stated: “‘Individuals such as Morton who encourage violence and create fear over the Internet are a danger to our society and to the freedoms we enjoy as citizens,’ said Assistant Director in Charge McJunkin. ‘Today’s plea, and other recent cases of those associated with Morton’s organization, demonstrate the widespread nature of this danger. Together with our partner law enforcement agencies, and with the assistance of the community, the FBI will continue to pursue those who promulgate violent extremism and promote the radicalization of others.'”

At the time of his prosecution, prosecutors described Jesse Morton as dangerous: “Morton not only endangered the lives of innocent people, but he also contributed to the destruction of the very freedoms on which our society is based.”

U.S. Attorney Neil MacBride stated about Morton: “We may never know all of those who were inspired to engage in terrorism because of Revolution Muslim, but the string of recent terrorism cases with ties to Morton’s organization demonstrates the threat it posed to our national security.”

According to the Washington Post, “Morton pleaded guilty in 2012 to conspiring to solicit murder, making threatening communications and using the Internet to place others in fear. In announcing his plea, federal authorities said his website helped radicalize people across the world, and he had contact with some who had specific, violent plots in mind. For example, he worked with Zachary Chesser — an Oakton High School graduate who tried to join an al-Qaeda-linked terrorist group in Somalia — to promote attacks on the writers of ‘South Park,’ according to his plea. He also was in touch with Rezwan Ferdaus, who admitted to plotting to attack the Pentagon and U.S. Capitol, and with Jose Pimentel, who was arrested in a plot to kill members of the U.S. military returning from active duty in Afghanistan.”

The same Washington Post report also stated in February 2016 that “the 37-year-old is out and being paid by the FBI, according to government records and an attorney who says Morton helped federal officials build a case against a client accused of trying to join the Islamic State.”

CNN reported that in 2009, Jesse Morton’s Revolution Muslim website “praised Nadal Hasan for his attack at Fort Hood, Texas, which left 13 people dead and 32 others wounded. They called Hassan ‘an officer and a gentleman.’ ”

Younus Abdullah Muhammad aka Jesse Morton announced his freedom just barely over a year ago on a website dated May 23, 2015, with a group that he founded called IslamPolicy.com (now archived).

On his Islam Policy website, Younus Abdullah Muhammad also provided links to the “philosophy” of his “Islam Policy” group, described in a document “On Crafting Islamic Policy: the Methodology of Islamic Social Science,” where he writes “Islam Policy proceeds thereby to continue this call and intends to advance in such a manner that the viral nature of the Islamic worldview can create the type of conditions under which a tipping point of transition can occur and the ideas of Islam can spread to influence every household.” Younus Abdullah Muhammad continues to have this “Islam Policy” philosophy posted on the Internet.

Younus Abdullah Muhammad stated the call for this Islamic worldview was based on “Syed Qutb, Islamist theoretician and initiator of this call,” which Younus Abdullah Muhammad states is described for the “the modern era explained in Milestones” for the vanguard of those seeking to advance “the viral nature of the Islamic worldview.” (Reference: page 20, Younus Abdullah Muhammad, “On Crafting Islamic Policy: the Methodology of Islamic Social Science.”) In this same “philosophy” statement (Reference: page 5), Younus Abdullah Muhammad also points out how “Islam has entered almost every home in the world despite it being declared not so long ago that Islam would never rise again,” and cross-references this to mistaken views by the British regarding the “defeat of the Ottoman Khilafah.”

Syed Qutb, also spelled Sayyid Qutb, was the leading member of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood in the 1950s and 1960s. In 1966, Syed Qutb was convicted of plotting the assassination of Egyptian president Gamal Abdel Nasser and was executed by hanging.

Based on his self-documented philosophy promoted on his Islam Policy website at the time of his announcement from release in 2015, it appears that Younus Abdullah Muhammad remains a supporter of the Muslim Brotherhood ideology, and continues to promote the vision of the Muslim Brotherhood leadership. (This website is no longer visible to the public, except through archive access.) However, GWU counterterrorism analyst Younus Abdullah Muhammad retains his pro-Muslim Brotherhood “Islam Policy” statement posted on Scribd.  He has continued to post such “Islam Policy” documents on Scribd, as recently as September 2015, after announcing his release from prison.  (Younus Abdullah Muhammad has 35 documents posted on his Scribd account. )

[NOTE: His “Islam Policy” Scribd account also continues to include documents from his terrorist “Revolution Muslim” website, including one which states: “It is time for the mujahedeen who cut off the head to cut off the hands. There are indications that we will now see movements against the regimes, but we must also formulate a coherent vision of what the Islamic State may look like and develop and advance the battle for hearts and minds. This is evident in the ideologies espoused by the leaders of the jihad. It is time to advance to another stage of the struggle and lose the noose of kufr that controls the land. It is time to begin to think about the necessary next steps that must predicate the conquering of Rome.”]

On a Facebook page with Younus Abdullah Muhammad’s name, photo, and link to his website and IslamPolicy announcement of his release from prison, there continue to be radical followers on Facebook, including one praising and quoting Anwar Al-Aliki.

If Younus Abdullah Muhammad has since rejected this pro-Muslim Brotherhood world view, it has not been clearly expressed, and was not expressed in his announcement of his early release from prison for his terrorist conviction, nor has he removed his Islam Policy philosophy statement on this, despite other updates to his Scribd Internet web postings, after his release from prison and post-release postings to IslamPolicy.com.

While this may seem surprising to those not aware of establishment U.S. government counterterrorism expert views, U.S. government support for the Muslim Brotherhood has been a common and regular fixture in meetings at various levels of U.S. Government counterterrorism and foreign policy organizations. The Muslim Brotherhood, whose motto is “Jihad is our way,” has been viewed as one that should be engaged with, at the highest levels of U.S. government. Even the distinguished West Point Counterterrorism Center (CTC) has published articles calling for engagement and cooperation with the Muslim Brotherhood. George Mason University Professor Peter Mandaville used the CTC Sentinel to call for engagement with the Muslim Brotherhood.

The concept behind such tactics is to “engage” with the Islamist Muslim Brotherhood and legitimize its anti-freedom ideology, as a trade-off for preventing violent terrorist attacks.

The tactic fails to grasp the Human Rights imperative of providing a counter-narrative in support of shared human rights that challenges anti-freedom ideologies, in the false belief, that a weakened commitment to freedom will allow for short term improvements in security measures.

However, Chapter 2 of The 9/11 Commission Report (2004), “The Foundation of the New Terrorism,” cites Muslim Brotherhood leader Syed Qutb for influencing Osama Bin Laden’s worldview in these terms: Qutb “dismissed Western achievements as entirely material, arguing that ‘nothing will satisfy its own conscience and justify its existence.'” “Three basic themes emerge from Qutb’s writings. First, he claimed that the world was beset with barbarism, licentiousness, and unbelief (a condition he called jahiliyya, the religious term for the period of ignorance prior to the revelations given to the Prophet Mohammed). Qutb argued that humans can choose only between Islam and jahiliyya. Second, he warned that more people, including Muslims, were attracted to jahiliyya and its material comforts than to his view of Islam; jahiliyya could therefore triumph over Islam. Third, no middle ground exists in what Qutb conceived as a struggle between God and Satan. All Muslim – as he defined them – therefore must take up arms in this fight. Any Muslim who rejects his ideas is just one more nonbeliever worthy of destruction.”

In his May 23, 2015 announcement of his release from prison, Younus Abdullah Muhammad aka Jesse Morton stated he was “particularly intrigued by what has been classified as countering violent extremism (CVE),” and that he rejected ” the conception that terrorism is justified.” He stated “If we are to truly stand for the ummah’s liberation, we will have to locate a balanced position between the day’s extremes.”

He stated that he would “remain staunchly opposed to the national security or counterterrorism state and its connection to the elite, neoliberal order.”

He stated that his “primary interests presently include a concentration on the role of hadith interpretation and its influence on contemporary Islamic movements, on U.S. foreign policy in the Muslim world, the state of Islam and Muslims in America, the actual principles embodied in an American system that has been erased from contemporary conceptions (no not the false patriotic fascism promoted by FoxNews), and Islamic politics, economics and society generally.”

On a Facebook page with Younus Abdullah Muhammad’s name, photo, and link to his website and IslamPolicy announcement of his release from prison, this Facebook page provides cover art for his “IslamPolicy.com” website, including a man waving an ISIS flag. This was where there was a link to the announcement of his release from prison in May 2015.

In August 2016, another member of the GWU CCHS Program on Extremism, Amarnath Amarasingam, was linked to association with an ISIS-inspired terrorist Aaron Driver, who set off a partial explosion in Strathroy (near Toronto) in Canada. Mr. Amarasingam stated that he was surprised that ISIS terrorist Aaron Driver would commit violence, and he stated that he was trying to discourage him from radical views.

Additional notes: the FBI Press Release on the conviction of Younus Abdullah Muhammad also stated his association with the following terrorist individuals, who were quoted or inspired by his Revolution Muslim website. This included terrorist individuals throughout the United States of America in Maryland, Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, North Carolina, and Massachusetts.

The FBI stated the following:

In his statement of facts, Morton admitted that the Revolution Muslim websites contained the writings of and/or contributed to the radicalization of individuals who were inclined to engage in violence, including the following:

Samir Khan, previously of Charlotte, N.C., before moving to Yemen in 2009, was authorized by Morton to post materials on Revolution Muslim, and Morton provided Khan with two articles for the first two online editions of Jihad Recollections, an online magazine dedicated to violent extremism. In July 2010, Morton posted the first edition of Inspire magazine, an English-language magazine supporting al Qaeda that Morton believed to be the product of Khan. The magazine included an eight-page article titled “Make a bomb in the kitchen of Your Mom,” with detailed instructions regarding the construction of an explosive device.

Bilal Zaheer Ahmad, of the United Kingdom, was provided the password to Revolution Muslim by Morton and given permission to post messages. In November 2010, Ahmad praised Roshonara Choundhry for attempting to kill a British member of parliament over his support for the Iraq war and posted a list of 383 members of parliament who had voted for the Iraq war, along with suggestions on how to get in to see them and a link to a store selling a weapon similar to that used in Choundhry’s attack. Ahmad told Morton that the purpose of the post was to “make those MPs fearful.”

Abdel Hameed Shehedah, a former resident of Staten Island, N.Y., who was charged in October 2010 of making false statements involving his alleged attempt to travel to Pakistan to join a fighting group such as the Taliban. The statement of facts states that Shehedah attended Revolution Muslim meetings, made his website, civiljihad.com, a feeder site for Revolution Muslim and eventually arranged for all visitors to his website be routed automatically to Revolution Muslim.com.

Rezwan Ferdaus, of Ashland, Mass., was charged in September 2011 with plotting to attack the Pentagon and U.S. Capitol using large remote controlled aircraft filled with C-4 plastic explosives. The statement of facts states that in February 2010, Ferdaus e-mailed Morton asking for counsel regarding his duties as a Muslim and whether martyrdom operations were proper practice. Morton replied that martyrdom operations must be judged by intention but can have “enormous benfits (sic) in a war of attrition.”

Colleen R. LaRose, aka “Jihad Jane,” of Montgomery County, Pa., was charged in March 2010 with a variety of terrorism-related offenses, including plotting to kill Lars Vilks, a Swedish cartoonist who has been the subject of several murder threats based on his artwork depicting Muhammad. According to the statement of facts, Morton notified Sheikh Abdullah Faisal, a Muslim cleric convicted in the United Kingdom of soliciting murder, that LaRose was a subscriber to Revolution Muslim YouTube accounts.

Antonio Benjamin Martinez, of Baltimore, Md., was arrested and charged with plotting to bomb a military recruiting station in December 2010. The statement of facts states that one month prior to his arrest, Martinez viewed a video of Osama bin Laden and multiple terror training camp video clips on the Revolution Muslim website.

Jose Pimental, of New York City, was arrested and charged in November 2011 in connection with a plot to build and use a bomb to assassinate members of the U.S. military returning from active duty in Afghanistan. According to the statement of facts, Pimental contacted Morton saying that he was a big fan of Revolution Muslim, and that Morton recommended that Pimentel stay away from an individual because “there is high probability that he is working for the FBI.”

Mohamed Hamoud Alessa and Carlos Eduardo Almonte, both of New Jersey, were arrested in June 2010 on their way to Somalia to join a terrorist organization to kill individuals whose beliefs and practices did not accord with their ideology. The statement of facts states that both Alessa and Almonte were associates of Morton’s within the Revolution Muslim organization, and Morton was interviewed by investigators from the New York City Police Department on the day of their arrest.

Responsible for Equality And Liberty (R.E.A.L.) believes that all individuals deserve a second chance in life, and that we can all change our views on issues challenging human rights. However, R.E.A.L. does not believe that the continued support for Muslim Brotherhood anti-freedom philosophy, which inspired terrorists in the past, provides the answer for ending terrorist violence in the future, and it certainly does not respect our shared Universal Human Rights for all.

Counterterrorism – Warning Signs Ignored

Many years ago, my late father, God Bless His Soul, had an idea in Pennsylvania to buy old buildings no one wanted and try to fix them up for low-income renters. The idea was necessary and worthy. But not every property was necessary and worthy. He would have me accompany him on some property visits. One time I went with him to such a place, which he thought was a good idea, and I did not. Then as I was walking into this building, my foot went through the floor. Looking up at him, and pulling myself up so I didn’t fall the rest of the way through the floor, I convinced him that this was a not a good decision. Sometimes we need to wake up on bad decisions. We need wisdom as much as we need stubbornness.  We have to have the courage to walk away from bad decisions, and to change our minds and paths.

When your foot goes through the floor, that is a warning sign and time for you to wake up. The answer is not to put a rug over it and pretend the problem isn’t there. Sometimes you have to realize not all decisions are good decisions. You can’t always make every bad decision work, and you have to have the courage to change.

But that is where American Counterterrorism is today. It has become so caught up in tactics and maneuvers that it literally is losing the plot on the real objectives of safety for our society. It never has fully grasped that tactics, without a strategy in a war of ideas, are simply stalling tactics, while effective for a while, will eventually be shown as totally blighted as long-term practices. This is not always readily evident, until we see warning signs of the blight and decrepitness. We will go along thinking the outside of the building and maybe the inside looks fine, just until our foot goes through the floor.

One of the decrepit practices in American Counterterrorism is the belief that we can have endless lengthy investigations of extremists – for year after year – in hopes that we will snare other “extremists” along the way, like a “patient fisherman.”  Or like these are just any other type of criminal.  But what the tacticians miss is that terrorists and extremists are not harmless fish, nor are they “typical criminals.” Terrorists and extremists are in the practice of death and destruction. Terrorists and extremists are not simply misunderstood youth and adults – they actively promote ideologies which seek the destruction of our shared human rights and lives. This is not a game.

For example, the arrest this week of Nicholas Young, a Washington DC Metro subway police officer, based on his support of the ISIS terrorist movement, was after six long years of investigation. During all of that time, he was a Metro Subway Police Officer. Now we have all been “reassured” that the public on the subway system was not in danger from this ISIS terrorist movement supporter, and that he was being “watched.” But allowing terrorist suspects and extremist aligned with terrorist causes to be members of our police, law enforcement, or any other vital public service – where the very lives of masses of the public are dependent – is a simply irresponsible decision.

Now that some members of Congress are asking logical and sane questions about such a reckless practice, some believe that this is simply a “political concern,” and only an issue for Republicans. As a long time user of the WMATA subway system mass transit, I can assure the public that a very diverse set of Americans and human beings travel on the Washington DC subway system of every economic standing, race, religion, gender, ethnic group, and of course, political views.

Playing dice with the public subway riders’ lives for six years was simply an unconscionable decision. It is astounding how little outrage we have seen, but this is largely affected by the political nature of the Establishment media, who believe that this dramatic public safety issue needs to be filtered by what is appropriate for their current political narrative.  This week’s arrest should be the number one story in the nation.  Instead, the corruption of our establishment media has allowed it to become buried as a local after-thought, important only to some local Washington DC news media – and then just for a moment.  This is why our media cannot and will not be a force any type of consistent advocate on public safety issues, human rights, and issues that require contextual consideration.  The challenge of extremist terrorism requires a more consistent public focus than what we see today.

Federal law enforcement will also tell you that the necessities of American law force them to create a vast and complex investigation for domestic terrorist suspects to find a law that will result in a compelling conviction. There are very few actual laws to deal with domestic terrorist threats, and this forces federal law enforcement to find some weapons charge, or find an unquestionable link to a specific illegal foreign terrorist organization, with a well documented support by the suspect.

Certainly we need rigorous investigations to ensure that the public is not unfairly persecuted. But the idea that a police officer can be supporting violent extremism for all of these years, and for years, actively supporting the ISIS terrorist movement, while still having a police authority in a vulnerable area like mass transit, should be the red warning flag to wake up a torpid counterrorism community.

Unquestionably, the first place we need to start is with new LAWS. We must challenge the righteous members of Congress who are astounded by this recklessness, to work to develop laws that allow for prosecution of domestic terrorists who work with and support groups of violent extremism. We cannot let such lack of legal authority drag on forever. There has to be a line at which conspiracy to work with domestic terrorists to plan acts of terror on American soil is a crime. Our law enforcement needs such clear cut authority with the federal criminal code.

But at the same time, our counterterrorism community needs to be shaken up, and roused from their slumber on the shared actual goal (and human right) of safety, while they are sleepwalking in misguided dreams that endless tactics will stop terrorist attacks. If Nicholas Young had actually committed a terrorist attack, while a member of the Metro Police force, in addition to any horrific tragedy in the loss of life and/or injury, the consequences in the violation of trust and public willingness to respect law enforcement would have been devastatingly destructive.

America needs a counterterrorism community that realizes it cannot play with the lives, safety, and trust in our law enforcement community, by endless tactic on tactic, while risking the very lives of those they have sworn to protect and represent.

Today, our counterterrorism community’s actions and failure to act are providing the basis for the next 9/11 Commission Report. To those who never read it, the warning signs were there, too many in our representative government simply did not have the will and the actual concern to do something about the warning signs. We don’t need another 9/11 Commission Report of the future to tell us where we have gone wrong, because we can clearly see it with our own eyes today.

When your foot goes through the floor, it is time to wake up and realize that you must change your path.

Baton Rouge Terrorist Attack on Police

In Baton Rouge, Louisiana, terrorist Gavin Eugene Long was identified as the perpetrator of a terrorist act on July 17, 2016, which resulted in killing three police officers.  Long also went by the name Cosmo Ausar Setepenra.  The terrorist Long was killed after his sniper attack on the police officers, including a black police officer.  The victims were: Deputy Brad Garafola, Officer Matthew Gerald,  and Corporal Montrell Jackson.   In videos online, Long also described himself as a member of the racist extremist group “Nation of Islam.”  Terrorist Long received weapons training in the U.S. Marine Corps, and had left the military; his final Marine rank was E-5.   He expressed hatred for “crackers,” which is a slur term for whites.

Baton Rouge Terrorist Gavin Eugene Long – “I was also a Nation of Islam member”

In a video under his Conversations with Cosmos social media account, terrorist Gavin Eugene Long provided a video stating that he was a member of the Nation of Islam extremist group.  In what appeared to be a way to then protect the extremist group from accountability in its racist incitement, he then did not want his actions to be “affiliated” with the NOI extremist group, stating: “If anything happens with me, because I’m an alpha male, I stand up, I stand firm, I stand for mine, until the end… Yeah, I also was also a Nation of Islam member. Don’t affiliate me with it. Don’t affiliate me with anything.”

This is the second recent terrorist attack associated with the Nation of Islam extremist group; a previous recent terrorist attack was on July 8, 2016 in Dallas.  Baton Rouge terrorist Gavin Long called the Dallas terrorist shootings of five Dallas police officers an act of “justice.”

Extreme hatred of whites is part of the ideology of the NOI extremists, which is described by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC).  The SPLC states regarding the NOI: “NOI members continue to promote racist and anti-Semitic ideas,” and regarding its leader Louis Farrakhan that: “the deeply racist, anti-Semitic and anti-gay rhetoric of its leaders, including top minister Louis Farrakhan, have earned the NOI a prominent position in the ranks of organized hate.”  SPLC has also stated regarding the NOI that: “Founder Wallace D. Fard (alternately, Farad Muhammad) and his ‘messenger’ and successor Elijah Muhammad preached a hybrid creed with its own myths and doctrines. These held that over 6,000 years ago, the black race lived in a paradise on earth that was destroyed by the evil wizard Yacub, who created the white ‘devil’ through a scientific process called ‘grafting.’ Fard and his disciple preached of a coming apocalyptic overthrow of white domination, insisting that the dominion of evil was to end with God’s appearance on earth in the person of Fard. Following this, NOI predicts an epic struggle in which the Nation of Islam will play a key role in preparing and educating the Original People, who ruled the earth in peace and prosperity until Yacub’s ‘blue-eyed devils’ came along to gum things up. The Nation of Islam teaches that intermarriage or race mixing should be prohibited. This is point 10 of the official platform, ‘What the Muslims Want’ published 1965.  NOI’s connection to Islam is through its founder Fard. NOI believes, like other Muslims, that there is no other God but Allah, but they redefine ‘Allah’ by saying that he ‘came in the person of W. D. Fard.'”

SPLC also states regarding the NOI that “During the early 1980s, the deeply bigoted language for which NOI is infamous for today became daily fare, exacerbated by the charged atmosphere surrounding Jesse Jackson’s 1984 presidential bid. Farrakhan made several of his most infamous remarks during the campaign, including calling Hitler ‘a very great man’ and Judaism a ‘dirty religion’ (some say he actually termed it a ‘gutter religion’). While these and other remarks ultimately spurred Jackson to publicly disavow Farrakhan, the controversy actually increased the NOI leader’s visibility and appeal to many African Americans angered at the attacks on him.  Farrakhan’s racist venom continued, to the point that he was banned in 1986 from entering the United Kingdom, where officials cited concerns for racial harmony. He frequently reiterated the ‘dirty religion’ theme along with references to the ‘so-called Jew’ (arguing that the ‘true’ Jews were black North Africans) and constant accusations of secret Jewish control of financial and political institutions. One of the most baseless attacks came in the form of a 1991 ‘study’ ordered up by Farrakhan and written by NOI’s “Historical Research Department.” Entitled The Secret Relationship Between Blacks and Jews, the book uses isolated examples of Jewish merchants’ involvement in the purchase and ownership of slaves to place the onus of the slavery industry squarely on Jewish shoulders — a historical falsehood.  While Jews remain the primary target of Farrakhan’s vitriol, he is also well known for bashing gay men and lesbians, Catholics and, of course, the white devils, whom he calls ‘potential humans … [who] haven’t evolved yet.’ ”

Terrorist Micah Xavier Johnson was identified as responsible for the shooting and murder of Dallas Police on July 7, 2016. Micah Johnson shot 12 police officers and two civilians, killing five of the officers, who were shot by Johnson in a sniper-style, elevated location.  The terrorist was killed in a parking lot, after refusing to negotiate.  It was the deadliest day for law enforcement officers since 9/11.  The U.S. Army said that Johnson was a part of the Army Reserve for six years and served for nine months in Afghanistan, where he received military training in weapons.

Dallas police say Johnson had bomb-making materials, ballistic vests, rifles, ammunition, and a personal journal of combat tactics at his home. It was reported that Johnson sought to “exterminate whites,” especially white officers, according to Texas local media.  The report also stated Johnson had been a part of the Houston chapter of the New Black Panther party a few years ago.

CBS News also reported that terrorist Micah Xavier Johnson was also a supporter on social media of the Nation of Islam (NOI), which is led by Louis Farrakhan, as well as the Black Riders Liberation Party.   It must be understood that the NOI hate group does not recognize white people as “human beings,” but rather than “white devils” that were created through a mystical process they call “grafting,” and who had not “evolved” as human beings.

On July 8, 2016, the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) wrote that: “Micah Xavier Johnson, the man identified by police as the sniper who shot 12 law enforcement officers at a protest in Dallas last night, was a fan of black separatist hate groups monitored by the Southern Poverty Law Center.  Johnson liked on Facebook the New Black Panther Party (NBPP), the Nation of Islam and the Black Riders Liberation Party, all listed by the SPLC as hate groups.”

On July 11, 2016, CNN reported that an extremist Facebook page supporting the Nation of Islam group defended the terrorist act: “After the shootings and the death of Johnson, one of those Facebook sites devoted to the teachings of Elijah Mohammed took a page form the online playbook of ISIS and made the Dallas cop killer a martyr.
The site posted Johnson’s photo with the message, ‘R.I.P.’ for the man who ‘stood up to injustice.’ ”

Micah Xavier Johnson appeared in a photograph at an event with “hip hop” musician Richard Griffin, known as “Professor Griff,” who made songs with extreme lyrics.  Richard Griffin was known for racist statements, and Griffin was a member of the Nation of Islam.  On July 8, 2016, although Richard Griffin posed in an embrace of terrorist Micah Xavier Johnson, Richard Griffin stated that he did not know him.

D. Fard.’ ”

Persecution of Ahmadi Muslims Report Shows Denial of Religious Freedom, Human Rights in Pakistan, Other Countries

Responsible for Equality And Liberty (R.E.A.L.) supports the universal human rights of freedom of religion for all. But for the Ahmadiyya Muslim community, such freedom is regularly under attack especially in Pakistan and among other areas of the world, including Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Belarus, Belgium, Bulgaria, Egypt, Gambia, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, and the United Kingdom.

R.E.A.L. has previously reported on terrorist attacks on Ahmadi Muslims in Pakistan and Bangladesh, as well as terrorist killings in the United Kingdom and official institutionalized attacks on Ahmadi Muslim freedom of religion in  Indonesia.

In Pakistan, such institutionalized hatred and denial of religious freedom of Ahmadi Muslims is part of Pakistan law and government practice.   This includes the  anti-Ahmadiyya Ordinance XX  of 1984 “to prohibit the Qadiani group, Lahori group and Ahmadis from indulging [what the the Pakistan government calls] anti-Islamic activities.”  This Ordinance XX  effectively prevents Ahmadi Muslims from preaching or professing their Muslim beliefs.  In Pakistan,  Ahmadi Muslims are denied the right  to profess the Islamic creed publicly or call their places of worship mosques.  In addition to such institutionalized persecution in Pakistan, the Ahmadiyya Muslim community is a target by anti-human rights extremists who have committed terrorist attacks on their mosques during prayers killing 100 worshipers, attacks on Ahmadi Muslims throughout Pakistan, and use of Pakistan’s “blasphemy law” to target and officially persecute Ahmadi Muslims.

An annual report is issued on the stark persecution of Ahmadiyya Muslim community in Pakistan, titled “A Report on Persecution of Ahmadis in Pakistan.” The latest such report, for the year 2015, shows the extreme and institutionalized persecution against Ahmadi Muslims.  The report, published in English and in Urdu,

In May 2016, the Persecution of Ahmadis group has stated: “Pakistan is increasingly descending into chaos and becoming a place where members of Ahmadiyya community are increasingly marginalized. It has become very difficult for Ahmadis to live and practice their faith in peace. There is an organised campaign underway to deprive the members of community of their basic rights, such as right to worship and work or take education. The hate mongers seem to have an extensive support network and funding to publish hate material and organised conferences and events to spew hatred. There was a significant increase in hate propaganda against the community. The government agencies responsible for implementing the laws are being manipulated by opponents of the community. Instead of upholding the law, they continue to cave into the demands of extremists.”

In the annual report, there is a discussion of forced ban on Ahmadiyya literature, as well as the growing proliferation of violent anti-Ahmadi literature such as the “sale of the ‘Tohfa Qadianiat’ written by Maulvi Yusuf Ludhianwi, in which he requires the readers ‘not to leave a single Qadiani alive on earth’.”  The report also states: “Majlis Tahaffuz Khatme Nabuwwat Peshawar issued a pamphlet which states: ‘It is Jihad to shoot such people (Ahmadis) in the open.’ ”

This annual report also describes the killing of Ahmadi Muslims for their faith.   It states: “Ahmadis have been murdered for their faith since the promulgation of Ordinance XX. Till now hundreds have been killed, and not even 5% of the killers have faced justice. People are told by mullas that Ahmadis are Wajib ul Qatl ‘must be killed’. All this encourages
criminals to attempt murder. ” In 2015, this included known reports of two Ahmadi Muslims for their faith in Lahore and in DJ Khan.

Ahmadi-Pakistan-Muslim-Persecute
Pakistan: Ahmadi Muslims Murdered for their Faith in 2015 per annual report – Mr. Ikram Ullah and Mr. Nauman Najam

In Lahore, the report describes the murder of a 21 year old man, Nauman Najam.  It states an:  “Ahmadi youth, Mr Nauman Najam was shot dead in Karachi at about 8 p.m. in his shop by unidentified killers. Earlier in 1974 anti-Ahmadi riots in Gujranwala, three of his elders, the grandfather and two uncles were killed on one day by the mob.”  The report also quoted an Ahmadiyya head office press release: “He was a decent and law-abiding citizen who was liked by everyone who knew him. His life stands in stark contrast to the cowardice of sectarian hate-mongers. His killers clearly came with one motive and that was to kill him because of his faith, as he had no animosity with anyone or had any political association. The spokesperson of the Ahmadiyya Jama’at in Pakistan Saleemuddin said, ‘This death because of a callous attack on an innocent man is saddening but not surprising as with discriminatory laws present in Pakistan every Ahmadi’s life is in danger. It has been highlighted many times that the situation for Ahmadis in Pakistan is worsening with every passing day, and during last year 11 Ahmadis were killed because of their faith. Hate mongering and hate crimes against Ahmadis show no signs of abating. On the other hand the government has made tall claims to curb hate speech but on the ground hate material is openly published and distributed with impunity. ‘”

In DJ Khan, the report describes the murder of a 37 year old man, Taunsa Sharif.  It states “Mr. Ikram Ullah, a 37 years old Ahmadi was murdered in his medical store. Four unidentified men came on two motorcycles, stopped in front of his store and opened fire at him. Several bullets hit him including one in the head, and he died on the spot. The killers raised slogans at the spot and cheered that they had dispatched an infidel to hell. The bereaved family includes one widow, one daughter aged 5 years and a son aged 18 months. Mr. Ikram Ullah was an active member of the local Ahmadiyya community. He was a very noble person who had no personal vendetta with anyone. It is relevant that almost a month earlier some terrorists attempted, unsuccessfully, to attack Ahmadi worshippers in the local mosque. This resulted in injuries to a constable on duty. The police arrested some suspects in follow-up sweeps. A criminal case was registered against the attackers. Mr. Ikramullah was an important witness for the prosecution. Spokesman of the Ahmadiyya community in Pakistan, Mr. Saleemuddin strongly condemned this tragic incident and expressed his grief and sorrow. He said that continuous hateful propaganda against Ahmadis all over the country is the primary reason of such incidents. He said that according to the National Action Plan effective action was to be taken against all promoters of hate, but mullas freely indulge in hateful and vicious propaganda against Ahmadis in rallies that are authorized by the administration. He demanded early arrest of the killers of Mr. Ikram Ullah and the delivery of justice.”

The annual report states of a mob attack against Ahmadi Muslims in Jhelum: “One of the most high profile cases of the year was the mob attack on an Ahmadi owned chip-board factory in Jhelum. Though sparked after an allegation of defiling the Quran, according to press reports the attack was pre-planned. Ahmadi residents of the factory and in surrounding vicinity were forced to flee from their homes and were lucky to escape with their lives.”

The annual report describes ongoing attacks on Ahmadi mosques.  The report states that “One Ahmadiyya mosque was demolished, two were sealed, one disfigured and another one forcibly occupied temporarily and its furnishings set ablaze.” “Ahmadiyya mosques remained a priority on the hit-list of religious extremists. The authorities in Punjab shared ‘the piety’ attributed to defiling Ahmadi places of worship. In Panchnand, District Chakwal, authorities themselves razed the minarets and the arch of the local Ahmadi mosque. A civil judge in Gujrat ruled that a mosque that was in Ahmadis’ use, possession and care for almost half a century should be handed over to non-Ahmadis. In Jhelum, after the devastating attack on Ahmadi-owned factory, when calm returned, the mullas decided to take over a near-by Ahmadiyya mosque the next day. They not only occupied it in the presence of LEAs but also set on fire its furnishings.”

This report shows the continuing rampant and institutionalized persecution against Ahmadi Muslims in Pakistan, in contradiction to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and the and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), signed by Pakistan.

Pakistan is a party to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) ratified as of June 23, 2010, as well as a signatory to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Religious oppression of minorities in Pakistan is in direct contradiction to its international agreement of ICCPR Article 18, which includes “1. Everyone shall have the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion.”

But when it comes to Ahmadi Muslims, Pakistan directly violates such basic human rights and religious freedom, which it has agreed to protect. While Ahmadi Muslims once had religious leadership in Pakistan, they were forced to move their religious leadership to the United Kingdom.  Now in 2016, we have seen that Pakistan migrants to the United Kingdom are threatened even there.

Responsible for Equality And Liberty (R.E.A.L.) calls for human rights groups and those committed to our shared human rights to recognize this attack on the Ahmadiyya Muslim community’s religious freedom as a blatant and vicious attack on their universal human rights, and to call for Pakistan and all of the countries associated with the persecution of such Ahmadi Muslims to protect and preserve such universal human rights of freedom of religion that are a right for all of our fellow human beings.

Florida – Terrorist Planned Bombing of Jewish Synagogue to Promote ISIS Cause

On May 2, 2016, the U.S. Department of Justice reported on the arrest of James Gonzalo Medina, 40, of Hollywood, Florida, who was charged by criminal complaint with knowingly attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction against a person or property within the United States, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 2332a(a)(2). If convicted, Medina faces a maximum sentence of life in prison. James Gonzalo Medina was arrested Friday night as he walked toward the Aventura Turnberry Jewish Center synagogue in Hollywood, Florida, with what he thought was an explosive device in his hand, prosecutors said. The accused terrorist was part of an FBI sting operation with a “fake” bomb.

The accused terrorist was inspired by the ISIS terrorist movement, and sought to further the terrorist movement’s cause by his planned terrorist attack to inspire Muslims to commit other attacks. His goal was to have the television news media broadcast a story of an attack associated with “ISIS in America.” This once again demonstrates the de-centralized appeal of the ISIS terrorist movement, and its inspiration to individual radicalized extremists.

The U.S. Department of Justice reported that “[t]he arrest was the culmination of an undercover operation during which Medina was closely monitored by the South Florida Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF). The explosive device that he allegedly sought and attempted to use had been rendered inoperable by law enforcement and posed no threat to the public.”

James-Gonzalo-Medina

In the Criminal Complaint Case Number 16-MJ-02562-WCT filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida, David Clancy, Special Agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) provided an affidavit regarding James Gonzalo Medina’s terrorist intentions in attacking the Florida Aventura Turnberry Jewish Center synagogue. The criminal complaint clarifies the intentions of the accused terrorist, who sought to attack the synagogue because he believed he would kill numerous Jewish worshipers during a Jewish holiday period.

James Gonzalo Medina also sought to affiliate the terrorist act with the ISIS terrorist movement, to show his solidarity with the extremist cause. He indicated that he sought to use this ISIS-inspired terrorist attack to “go nationwide and inspire other Muslims to attack as well.” The accused terrorist felt that such a bombing of a Jewish synagogue in America “would give hope and light to other Muslims in America.” The accused terrorist felt that the terrorist bombing would inspire other terrorist attacks in Washington, DC, California, and other places around the world. According to the affidavit, he stated: “I wanna see it go worldwide with now all the Muslims realizing you know, when it’s our time… Next thing you know it will be in California, Washington, and the brothers are saying you know, it’s our time now.”

In the FBI affidavit filed with the criminal complaint, James Gonzalo Medina stated that he wanted the bombing of the Jewish synagogue to “make it look like it is ISIS in America.” The affidavit states that: “MEDINA felt the news of this attack conducted in this manner would go nationwide and inspire other Muslims to attack as well.” The FBI affidavit also describes meetings of an FBI Confidential Human Source (CHS) with two of accused terrorist James Gonzalo Medina’s associates “TI” and “BH,” which jointly sought to “stake out” the synagogue in planning for a terrorist bombing attack on it. The FBI Confidential Human Source (CHS) tried to discourage them “MEDINA is suicidal, he’s not a Muslim,” but the terrorist’s associates insisted on pursuing the plot to bomb the Florida Jewish synagogue.

The FBI affidavit reports that originally the accused terrorist James Gonzalo Medina planned to attack the Florida Jewish synagogue worshipers using an automatic rifle. The affidavit states: “Given that one of [accused terrorist] MEDINA’s associates had informed the CHS [Confidential Human Source] that MEDINA was planning to martyr himself in a firearms attack on the synagogue, the CHS sought to gather further details of the operation. MEDINA confirmed his desire to conduct the attack using AK-47 assault rifles.”

Furthermore, the FBI affidavit describes the ideological basis for the extremists’ terrorist plot. The affidavit states: “The CHS [Confidential Human Source] initially met with [accused terrorist] MEDINA alone. Over lunch, MEDINA described his conversion to Islam which occurred approximately four years ago. MEDINA explained some of his religious philosophies that form the basis for his current hatred for Jewish people made reference to a conversation he/she had with [terrorist associate] TI regarding a synagogue in Aventura.” MEDINA explained that if he would conduct an attack he would want to do it at a synagogue because Jewish people are the ones causing the world’s wars and conflicts. The CHS disclosed that TI had explained that MEDINA desire to become a martyr in the attack but the CHS offered the alternative of the CHS assisting to facilitate MEDINA’S escape. MEDINA further explained that attacking one synagogue would give hope and light to other Muslims in America.”

The FBI affidavit also stated “When the CHS explained that there was a Jewish holiday in a few weeks, MEDINA responded by saying that it would be a good time to bomb them. When the CHS questioned how realistic it was for him to be able to undertake an attack MEDINA explained that ‘this is how we were talking, cause you know TI has those AK-47s and that was our mission to use that at the synagogue, on using his weapons.’ The CHS explained to MEDINA how TI’s weapons could be traced and told him he had a contact who could get them untraceable weapons. MEDINA further explained that the ‘plot that he and BH had discussed allowed them to ‘strike back to the Jews, by going to a synagogue and just spraying everybody…’cause we’re Muslims you know what I mean? It’s a war man and it’s like it’s time to strike back here in America.’ MEDINA then stated that he wanted to go inside to kill people while the others shot people as they were fleeing the scene.”

The FBI affidavit further states: “On April 13, 2016, the CHS again met with MEDINA. The two traveled to a fast food restaurant and then to a local park to eat their food. MEDINA spent the majority of the meeting describing the ‘movies’ he creates using the Internet. While discussing when the attack should occur, MEDINA stated, ‘I’m ready whenever you’re ready. . .I’m down for this. This is, I’ve already got all my life already set.’ The conversation then turned toward the details of the attack, and the CHS addressed the concerns of entering the synagogue with firearms and then getting shot and instead proposed leaving an unspecified object behind and leaving the scene. MEDINA then replied, ‘[L]ike drop a bomb and just leave it and then it pop, just pop that b*tch and we out.’ The CHS talked about a timer for the bomb and MEDINA liked the idea and described nearby locations from where the bomb could be detonated, stating ‘[a]nd then we inside the Mall and sh*t and just pop it from like.. .see like, see that like, them red lights over there? Them three lights over there, like way out there?” This was a reference to the local shopping mall and reference to the stoplights down the road. The CHS then described how a cellular telephone could serve to detonate the bomb, and asked MEDINA whether he would like that. MEDINA laughingly responded, ‘I would, I think that would be interesting.’ ”

The FBI affidavit also stated: “After some unrelated conversation, MEDINA reintroduced the idea of the attack. He asked the CHS if he ‘felt’ what he was saying. MEDINA continued, ‘Because right now man, I’m up for it. I really am. I wanna get away with it. But I wanna, I wanna see it make the news and everybody.’ MEDINA then commented that the news coverage could galvanize Muslims to worldwide action: ‘I wanna see it go worldwide with now all the Muslims realizing you know, when it’s our time… Next thing you know it will be in California, Washington, and the brothers are saying you know, it’s our time now.’ MEDINA then discussed placing the bomb in the parking lot of the synagogue, and added, ‘[W]e can just lay one out there and then bomb it later… I’d like to put it like, as close ms possible, to the door.’ MEDINA also expressed a concern for concealing his lacks and proposed ‘to run in and out real quick like if you just park the car, I’m gonna just go in there real quick.’ The CHS and MEDINA then discussed a proposal from the CHS to hide the bomb under a large jacket and then leave the bomb in one of the synagogue’s bathroom. Regardless of these operational details, MEDINA expressed his desire to cause harm: ‘I mean though, whatever, whatever it is, it’s just gonna go off. I wanna see damage happen to their ass. l wanna see something man.’ The CHS and MEDINA then concluded the meeting by agreeing to meet on Saturday, April 16, 2016. The CHS offered to call the purported explosives associate and MEDINA agreed, stating ‘Let’s see if we can set up some kind detonate man.'”

Other parts of the FBI’s affidavit further described the desire of the accused terrorist James Gonzalo Medina to murder others, his hatred for Jewish people, and his desire to inspire Muslims to commit terrorist acts.

The affidavit states: “MEDINA envisioned a terrorist operation that would inflict maximum casualties, commenting ‘Cause, uh, I’m sure this is gonna be hammered. All these people gonna die.'”

The affidavit states: “On April 20, 2016, the CHS and an FBI employee operating in an undercover capacity (‘UCE’) met with MEDINA in the UCE’S vehicle. The UCE was posing as the acquaintance of the CHS who was an associate with explosives expertise and access. While driving to get something to eat MEDINA told a story about a Jewish woman he had met earlier who had given him a ride. A discussion had ensued regarding her fear of Muslims once she realized MEDINA was a Muslim and her thoughts that MEDINA might kill her. Thereafter, MEDINA remarked to the UCE and the CHS that he had told her, ‘[Y]ou know, we’re, we’re just getting bombed for no reason, and it was time to get out. But it made me just think more that, you know, it just, when she said that you will kill me, I’m thinking yeah man, I want to. You know what I mean? I really do…'”

The affidavit states: “Later, while in the car with the UCE, MEDINA reaffirmed his desire to commit the synagogue attack. The UCE sought to test MEDINA’s interest in the bombing and cautioned him that he did not have to go through with it. The UCE asked, ‘Why do you wanna do this?’ MEDINA responded, ‘Because I realize that I have a lot of love for Allah. And I know that all these, all these wars that are going on, it hurts me, too. You know? It’s my call of duty. I gotta get back, when I’m doing this, I feel that l’m doing it for a good cause for Allah.'”

The affidavit stated: “MEDINA’s comments prompted the UCE to ask another question about his motivation, ‘What message are you sending?’ The UCE wanted to know more about MEDINA’s purpose in attacking the synagogue, including what claim of responsibility would be made. . MEDINA answered that ‘I’m gonna call that it’s ISIS in America.’ ”

The affidavit stated: “After MEDINA described the attack plan, the UCE for a fourth time sought to question him about his resolve, ‘You’re sure this is something you want to do man?’ MEDINA responded, ‘I feel like it’s my calling.’ The UCE pressed MEDINA further, ‘Well I don’t want you to be crazy. You’re gonna have to go into this with both eyes open. You understand what I’m saying?’ MEDINA responded that it is Allah’s will and that he’s not crazy and reckless to the point where he would get the UCE arrested: ‘No I’m not like that.’ The UCE cautioned MEDINA one more time that once you do this. there’s no going back.” MEDINA reiterated his plan to personally deposit the bomb, and after it detonated, enjoy watching the news coverage of the attack: ‘That we, they, whatever they’re sayin’, that they’re being bombed and all of that. . . and knowing that it was from us. And just getting’ a joy that I’m doing this you know, I did it. It worked out. And whatever happens. it’s for the glory of Allah.’ MEDINA further explained his hope to credit ‘ISIS’ for the attack: ‘I do wanna like leave a notice that ISIS is like you know, here. If there’s somehow we can just like leave a printer or something or something that’s saying that, so at least they, they can show it on Television look they’re leaving this that ISIS is here. You know?”

The affidavit stated: “After another lengthy explanation of the attack plan. in which MEDINA would exit the car and place the bomb near the synagogue door, the UCE once again explained the seriousness of what MEDINA was planning: ‘Now you know there’s gonna be women and kids and everything else in that place.’ MEDINA at first seemed to interpret the UCE’s comments as a risk to himself: ‘And that’s the thing I gotta play it right where we’re not gonna be you know, being seen. it’s just a drop off.’ But the UCE further pressed MEDINA on his willingness to kill innocent people: ‘No, I understand that but when you put a bomb in a place like this, are you okay, you’ve made peace with Allah that you’re fine with killing women and children and everything else.’ The following exchange then took place:”

“JM : I think so. I think I’m fine. Um hmmm
UCE: You need to be sure brother.
JM : I am pretty sure. I think so. I believe so. I’m ready bro!
UCE: Ok. Cause you know you don’t have to do any of this.
JM: What do you mean doing it?
UCE: No, you don’t have to do it if you’re not comfortable with it.
JM : What? I’m ready.
UCE: It’s Allah’s will but you know …
JM : I’m up for it. I really am. This is no joke. I’m serious dog. If I have the equipment, believe me, in the time is, is that day and we doin’ it, I’m up for it bro. Just like I said. I mean, if I go inside and drop it off, that’s gon, that’s gonna be risky. You know .
UCE: Yeah, yeah.
JM : I think it’s better that I just, we just pull up to the car, put it like on the side, in the un, under, in the front and then just get back in an leave. And that’s it. That car’s gonna blow up. And that’s gonna blow the one beside it and one and everybody inside, it’s gonna cause chaos.”

The affidavit stated: “On April 21, 2016, MEDINA, the UCE, and the CHS again met and MEDINA provided the UCE with a laptop-style computer bag to conceal the device and offered his cellular telephone for use in the device to trigger the detonation. The group discussed many of the same topics from the prior meeting to include whether MEDINA was comfortable with killing innocent women and children. MEDINA did not waiver and stated that he was ready. When asked to re-sketch the target location, MEDINA did so during the meeting, highlighting important mission-critical items, such as camera locations, entry and exit points, parking lots, and access roads. MEDINA provided the UCE with a leaflet he had created for copying that contained a photo of the ‘ISIS’ flag and the words ‘ISIS in America.’ Ultimately, MEDINA and the UCE decided that the attack would take place on Friday, April 29, 2016.”

The affidavit stated: “Prior to his meeting with the UCE, MEDINA made three videos on the CHS’ cellular telephone. In one, he stated: ‘I am a Muslim and I don’t like what is going on in this world. I’m going to handle business here in America. Aventure watch your back. ISIS is in the house.’ In another, he stated: ‘Today is gonna be a day where Muslims attack America. I’m going to set a bomb in Aventura.’ In the third, he said his goodbyes to his family.”

The accused terrorist, James Gonzalo Medina, was arrested by federal authorities on April 29, 2016.  No one was injured.

Regarding the associates of the accused terrorist, the affidavit stated: “After the arrest of MEDINA, BH and TI were approached by agents. They each were cooperative and agreed to be interviewed. Each stated that they had heard MEDINA discuss his plans to conduct an attack. However, neither BH nor TI intended to participate with MEDINA.”

Responsible for Equality And Liberty (R.E.A.L.) stands in support of religious liberty and universal human rights, including all those persecuted for religious liberty, such as the Ahmadiyya Muslims who have been oppressed and persecuted in Pakistan, Indonesia and other parts of the world.  In Pakistan, as R.E.A.L. has repeatedly pointed out, Ahmadiyya Muslims have been the targets of violent terrorism and legalized persecution by the Pakistan government, which seeks to deny their status as Muslims.  In 1984, the oppressive Pakistan government passed a law making it illegal for Ahmadiyya Muslims to be considered Muslims.  The United Nations also concurs in recognition of their persecution in Pakistan.  Furthermore, R.E.A.L. has recently seen and condemned religious persecution of Ahmadiyya Muslims in Indonesia which seeks to target and deny religious freedom.

R.E.A.L. has regularly stood in support of these persecuted Muslims, and continues to stand for their freedoms, as we stand for the freedoms of all as part of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.  R.E.A.L. has had Ahmadiyya Muslims at our human rights events, publicized their persecution, and met them in Ahmadiyya mosques.  Ahmadiyya Muslims have also shared calls for protection of other persecuted religious minorities at R.E.A.L. events, including standing in support of persecuted Pakistan Christians.  R.E.A.L. stands in support of Ahmadiyya Muslims’ shared universal human rights and freedoms.  R.E.A.L. has reported such persecution at our blog and on Social Media, and at R.E.A.L. human rights day events.

So it greatly distresses R.E.A.L. to hear of anti-Ahmadiyya Muslim activist groups in the United Kingdom (UK) and elsewhere praising the persecution of Ahmadiyya Muslims.  R.E.A.L. rejects such anti-human rights hatred, praise of persecution, and even those praising terroristic violence.  In the UK, there has been a series of reports of persecution of Ahmadiyya Muslims reported by the BBC  – “Ahmadiyya ‘targeted by hate campaign’,” reported by the Guardian – “Ahmadi Muslims in UK call for urgent action against hate,” reported by the Wimbeldon Guardian – ” Religious hate leaflets found in Tooting, Streatham and Kingston,” and reported by the Independent – “Hardliners call for deaths of Surrey Muslims,”  there has been reports over the past six years on a growing campaign of hate and calls for violence in the UK against Ahmadiyya Muslims.

These UK media reports have repeatedly described threats and acts of sectarian violence by extremists, who claim they have Islamic religious authority to spread such hatred against Ahmadiyya Muslims.  This has included religious leaders that have sought boycotts against Ahmadi businesses, vandalism of Ahmadi mosques, and leaflets calling for the murder of Ahmadi Muslims in Kingston-upon-Thames.

R.E.A.L. has been aware of a UK-based organization, which calls itself the Khatme Nubuwwat Academy, which has led a campaign against the persecuted Ahmadiyya Muslims.  The UK-based Khatme Nubuwwat Academy considers itself an Islamic group and focuses on disparaging persecuted Ahmadiyya Muslims,  which it calls on its website the derogatory term “Qadiyanism” or “Qadianis.”  The UK-based Khatme Nubuwwat Academy uses this derogatory slur of  “Qadianis” in calling Ahmadiyya Muslims an “unrighteous cult, kafir and non-muslim.”  The UK-based Khatme Nubuwwat Academy website calls Ahmaids as “traitors” “to Islam.”

Anti-Ahmadiyya Hatred on UK Khatme Nubuwwat Academy Website

The Khatme Nubuwwat Academy has also been linked to leaflets distributed throughout South London calling for hate and reportedly calling for violence against Ahmadiyya Muslims.  The Wimbledon Guardian reported on such hate leaflets against Ahamdis, and reported that “some of the literature is produced by anti-Ahmadi group KN, whose spokesmen delivered speeches at the TIC in Tooting, Streatham mosque and the Kingston mosque.”  An image of the anti-Ahmadiyya Muslim literature clearly showed the address of the Khatme Nubuwwat Academy.  The Wimbledon Guardian further reported that: “Kingston police confirmed a teenage Ahmadi girl, who did not want to be named, gave them a statement claiming the leaflet, which was written in Urdu, said: ‘Kill a Qadiyani and doors to heaven will be open to you.’ ”  The London Guardian also reported on this persecution of Ahmadis and the threats by Khatme Nubuwwat supporters including literature calling the Ahmadiyya Muslim faith an “apostasy” which must receive must be punished by “capital punishment” (death).  Rafiq Hayat, national president of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community UK, told The Independent: “Through leaflet distribution, posting of hate material on websites and via programmes on satellite TV (often in Urdu and other south Asian languages) our community is being made a target of hatred and hostility by preachers of hate. The perpetrators of this act are Muslims and whilst they are certainly not representative of the vast majority of Muslims in this country, they are creating hatred in society.”

However, R.E.A.L. notes that, despite the UK’s Racial and Religious Hatred Act 2006 law, R.E.A.L. is unaware of  Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) actions for prosecution of religious hatred in these cases.  The Wimbledon Guardian followed up on a report where Lord Avebury was critical of the failure of the UK CPS to act on such threats of hatred and violence.

R.E.A.L. has also seen such anti-Ahmadiyya Muslim hatred from Khatme Nubuwwat Academy and its supporters on social media as well.  On the Twitter site of “KhatmeNubuwwat,” we have seen praise of Pakistan persecution of Ahmadi Muslims, such as “The Punjab Police is serving the citizens by erasing the Kalima & 99 names of Allah Almighty from Ahmadiyya mosque in Sultan Pura, Lahore.”

This disturbing and continuing trend of support for threats and violence by extremists against Ahmadiyya Muslims was brought into troubling focus after the death of British Muslim on Thursday, March 24, 2016, and the response of anti-Ahmadiyya Muslim activists.  R.E.A.L. learned of the murder of a Pakistan-born Muslim shopkeeper Asad Shah on the night of March 24, who was stabbed to death in what has been described as a “religiously prejudiced” murder  in UK’s Scotland city of Glasgow.  This murder of Muslim Asad Shah occurred hours after Mr. Shah posted greetings to Christians for Easter on social media, stating “Good Friday and very happy Easter, especially to my beloved Christian nation x!”  The murder occurred before the night before the Christian religious remembrance of Good Friday on March 25 and before Easter on Sunday March 27.

On March 26, the Daily Mail reported that: “It is believed Mr Shah belonged to the Ahmadi movement, a Muslim sect which promotes non-violence and tolerance of other faiths. Ahmadis identify themselves as Muslims and a determined missionary network has helped spread their teachings around the world.”

Multiple UK news media reported the arrest of a 32 year old Muslim man suspect who reportedly had attacked Mr. Asad Shah, who was stabbed to death, reportedly in the head.  One media source reported that “Mr Shah’s brother, who was working next door, rushed out to find the killer laughing while sitting on the Glasgow newsagent’s bleeding chest.”  It also reported that “Mohammad Faisal, a family friend, said a bearded Muslim wearing a long religious robe entered Mr. Shah’s shop and spoke to him in his native language before stabbing him in the head with a kitchen knife.”  The report stated that: “The brother dragged Mr Shah away but the guy continued attacking with the blade,’ said Mr Faisal. ‘They struggled up to the bus stop where Asad collapsed. ‘It was just a clear-cut revenge attack. For posting messages about peace, messages about greeting fellow Christians and Jews. ‘That man must not have been too happy about what he was doing, what he was preaching. It was a well-planned attack. He must have been an extremist. ‘He went straight for the head. He got stomped on the head as well. His brother suffered a slash down his shoulder area because he attacked him with a knife as well.’ ” An eyewitness to the attack on Mr. Shah, who did not want to be named, told the Daily Record: “As I drove past I saw two men standing over the victim.” “One was stamping on his head. There was a pool of blood on the ground. It was horrific.”

In addition, on March 26, the first full day after this terrorist attack on Mr. Asad Shah,  it was also brought to R.E.A.L.’s attention that those supporting the anti-Ahmadiyya Muslim hatred in the UK and by those supporting the Khatme Nubuwwat also praised this terrorist attack on Asad Shah.

R.E.A.L. discovered a social media site on Facebook for a “community”,  called the “Anti Qadianiat (Tahafuz Khatme Nubuwwat).”  This is a community which shares the anti-Ahmadiyya Muslim hate and contempt, which we have frequently seen by extremists in UK, which pejoratively refers to the Ahmadi Muslim community as “Qadianis,” just as the Khatme Nubuwwat Academy does.  This community is one of several such “Khatme Nubuwwat” sites with the same references and types of content as the official Khatme Nubuwwat website.

After the murder of Asad Shah, the Anti Qadianiat (Tahafuz Khatme Nubuwwat) community on Facebook posted, a report of Asad Shah’s murder with pleasure, stating in English “Congratulations to all Muslims,” and also writing in Urdu “ابق
جھوٹی نبوت کا دعویدار مربی اسد شاہ قادیانی قتل کر دیا گیا ہے,” which R.E.A.L. roughly translates as “”Reports on Asad Shah Ghulam’s false prophecy claims has been killed.”

The Anti Qadianiat (Tahafuz Khatme Nubuwwat) Facebook community had many who approved of this posting and liked it, a number who reposted the Facebook posting of the Asad Shah murder with the message “Congratulations to all Muslims.”   There were also some who used the new Facebook message comments to leave a “laughing” response of “haha.”

Anti Qadianiat (Tahafuz Khatme Nubuwwat) Anti-Ahmadiyya Facebook Site Mocks the Murder of Asad Shah – stating “Congratulations to all Muslims” after his MURDER (Facebook Screen Shot) – it was praised by 43 followers.

Among the 43 who praised this “congratulations to all Muslims” for the murder of Asad Shah, this included followers from the United Kingdom, Pakistan, and other locations, including UK followers which state that they are Manchester and Leeds.  It included a broad range of executives, business entrepreneurs and owners, college students, college graduates, housewives, technical experts, computer specialists, and many others.  It included UK followers working in security, and those in UK businesses.  It included at least one individual who publicly stated he was an officer in the Pakistan Government.  It also included Bhai Abu Bakr of the Tablighi Jamaat organization, which has been linked to terrorism in the past.

Bhai Abu Bakr of Tablighi Jamaat organization also praises call for “Congratulations to all Muslims” after the MURDER of Asad Shah of Glasgow (Facebook Screenshot)

R.E.A.L. has obtained screen shots of all of those who praised and supported this public Facebook praise for the MURDER of Asad Shah, prior to publishing this posting, including screen shots of their individual profile information, and 140 pages of the Anti Qadianiat (Tahafuz Khatme Nubuwwat) Anti-Ahmadiyya Facebook site.

R.E.A.L. stands ready to share this information with any human rights NGOs and, of course the UK law enforcement agencies investigating Asad Shah’s murder in Glasgow, as well as those within the CPS who should be investigating his murder and this praise of his murder under the UK’s Racial and Religious Hatred Act 2006 law.
