High Commissioner speaks out against domestic violence and “honour killing” on occasion of International Women’s Day”

United Nations reports:

March 2010 – So-called ‘honour killings’ are an extreme symptom of discrimination against women, which – including other forms of domestic violence – is a plague that affects every country, the United Nations human rights chief says, calling on governments to tackle impunity for this crime.

“The reality for most victims, including victims of honour killings, is that State institutions fail them and that most perpetrators of domestic violence can rely on a culture of impunity for the acts they commit – acts which would often be considered as crimes, and be punished as such, if they were committed against strangers,” states High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay.

In a statement issued today ahead of this year’s International Women’s Day, which is observed annually on 8 March, Ms. Pillay notes that traditionally, there has been some debate around the issue of State responsibility for acts committed in the private sphere.

“Some have argued, and continue to argue, that family violence is placed outside the conceptual framework of international human rights,” she says.

“However, under international laws and standards, there is a clear State responsibility to uphold women’s rights and ensure freedom from discrimination, which includes the responsibility to prevent, protect and provide redress – regardless of sex, and regardless of a person’s status in the family.”

It has been estimated that as many as one in three women across the world has been beaten, raped or otherwise abused during the course of her lifetime. And the most common source of such violence, Ms. Pillay states, comes from within the family, and amongst the most extreme forms of abuse is what is known as ‘honour killing.’

“Most of the 5,000 honour killings reported to take place every year around the world do not make the news, nor do the other myriad forms of violence inflicted on women and girls by husbands, fathers, sons, brothers, uncles and other male – and sometimes even female – family members.

“In the name of preserving family ‘honour,’ women and girls are shot, stoned, burned, buried alive, strangled, smothered and knifed to death with horrifying regularity.”

The UN human rights chief points out that the problem is exacerbated by the fact that in a number of countries’ domestic legal systems, including through discriminatory laws, still fully or partially exempt individuals guilty of honour killings from punishment. Perpetrators may even be treated with admiration and given special status within their communities.

“Honour killings are, however, not something that can be simply brushed aside as some bizarre and retrograde atrocity that happens somewhere else,” she adds. “They are an extreme symptom of discrimination against women, which – including other forms of domestic violence – is a plague that affects every country.”

Addressing the UN observance of International Women’s Day in New York yesterday, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon pointed out that injustice and discrimination against women persist around the world, manifesting in violence in some cases.

Over two thirds of women experience violence in their lifetime, most commonly at the hands of an intimate partner. “We sometimes hear it said that such practices are a matter of culture,” the Secretary-General said, strongly emphasizing that “they are not.”

In a related development, the UN Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) today announced that it has recorded 183,132 actions to end violence against women through its Say NO – UNiTE to End Violence against Women initiative, surpassing the initial goal for Say NO of stimulating more than 100,000 actions by International Women’s Day.

Launched in November 2009 as a web platform to facilitate, showcase and count efforts to address gender-based violence by individuals, governments and civil society, Say NO is a direct contribution to the Secretary-General’s UNiTE to End Violence against Women campaign.

Also today, UNIFEM launched a Global Virtual Knowledge Centre to End Violence against Women and Girls. The one-stop centre will support practitioners around the world in effective design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of policies and programmes.

The web-based site brings together lessons learned to date and recommended practices gleaned from initiatives on ending violence against women and girls, whether originating from the women’s movement, civil society organizations, governments, the UN system or other actors.

U.S.government’s 9/11 Commission Report defines Islamism

9/11 Commission Report, Page 562, (Notes Chapter 12, Note 3)

“3. Islamist terrorism is an immediate derivative of Islamism. This term distinguishes itself from Islamic by the fact that the latter refers to a religion and culture in existence over a millennium, whereas the first is a political/religious phenomenon linked to the great events of the 20th century. Furthermore Islamists define themselves as ‘Islamiyyoun/Islamists’ precisely to differentiate themselves from ‘Muslimun/Muslims.’ . . . Islamism is defined as ‘an Islamic militant, anti-democratic movement, bearing a holistic vision of Islam whose final aim is the restoration of the caliphate.'”

Florida: Racist “Hate Group” Seeks Own “Tea Party” Event – Rejected by Tea Party Leaders

On WPBR on February 25, 2010, former Ku Klux Klan and Nazi Party leader Don Black, leader of “white nationalist hate group” Stormfront, stated that “hate is a normal human emotion,” that “we are not afraid to tell the truth” about race, and warned of a white minority in America.  The Stormfront-led radio show on WPBR is also promoted on former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke’s web site.

Don Black’s son and co-leader in the Stormfront hate group Derek Black then interviewed invited guest Dennis Morris of Florida West Coast Council of Conservative Citizens (CofCC) Citrus County, who plans to hold an event on Saturday, February 27 in Little Springs Park in Crystal Rivers, Florida. The “white nationalist hate group” CofCC seeks to hold their own type of a racist “Tea Party” in Florida, but according to Dennis Morris all of the other Tea Party leaders in Florida have condemned what they view as CofCC’s hijacking of the Tea Party, and every one of the CofCC’s scheduled speakers have cancelled.

The Council of Conservative Citizens (CofCC) is described as a “white nationalist hate group” by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), which has quoted CofCC as stating “God is the author of racism.” Their mission statement declares that they “oppose all efforts to mix the races of mankind, to promote non-white races over the European-American people.”

Stormfront’s Derek Black described Dennis Morris as a “leader in the Tea Party movement,” even though Dennis Morris himself admitted that his efforts have been rejected by other Tea Party leaders.

The CofCC has consistently tried to infilitrate Florida Tea Party events.  In January, the Florida CofCC promoted a Florida Tea Party event at the Old Historic Courthouse in Inverness, FL.  In its follow-up article, “Florida CofCC works crowd at TEA Party,” the CofCC stated that “Council members passed out 2 boxes of THE CITIZENS INFORMER newspaper, and 250 Council business cards.”

Dennis Morris is described as “the organizer of the Crystal River Tea Party event.” On WPBR, Dennis Morris described the Stormfront-led radio program as “a great show and I honored to be here, it is a privilege.”  Dennis Morris stated that he viewed the Tea Parties as a good recruiting grounds for European Americans” to join “his white nationalist hate group” the CofCC.  Later, one caller “Andrew” who claimed that he had attended some Tea Party events did call in stating that he agreed with Stormfront and CofCC’s views on racial issues.

Dennis Morris stated that he sought to address the rights of European Americans at his CofCC “Tea Party” event. Derek Black stated that other Tea Party leaders have shown themselves as “too whimpy” on the issues, compared to Dennis Morris and his “white nationalist” CofCC group.

Dennis Morris stated that “most people that have come out against us are the other Tea Party leaders,” and that other groups demanded that he change the name of their event from Tea Party.  He stated “we have been denounced by all the other leaders of the Tea Parties.”  Dennis Morris complained that other Tea Party leaders had contacted every one of the people he had planned to speak and all of the scheduled speakers backed out of the “CofCC Tea Party” event.

Dennis Morris also stated that he made the mistake of inviting Florida area politicians running for office who rejected his invitation for a CofCC Tea Party event.  Dennis Morris complained that such individuals were no different than the “rats, dogs, and Sodomites that are already in office,” because they also rejected CofCC’s efforts to hold a “racist” “Tea Party” event.

Saudi cleric backs gender segregation with fatwa

A prominent Saudi cleric has issued an edict calling for opponents of the kingdom’s strict segregation of men and women to be put to death if they refuse to abandon their ideas.

Shaikh Abdul-Rahman al-Barrak said in a fatwa the mixing of genders at the workplace or in education “as advocated by modernisers” is prohibited because it allows “sight of what is forbidden, and forbidden talk between men and women.”

” Whoever allows this mixing … allows forbidden things, and whoever allows them is an infidel and this means defection from Islam … Either he retracts or he must be killed … because he disavows and does not observe the Shariah “

“All of this leads to whatever ensues,” he said in the text of the fatwa published on his website (albarrak.islamlight.net).

“Whoever allows this mixing … allows forbidden things, and whoever allows them is an infidel and this means defection from Islam … Either he retracts or he must be killed … because he disavows and does not observe the Shariah,” Barrak said.

“Anyone who accepts that his daughter, sister or wife works with men or attend mixed-gender schooling cares little about his honor and this is a type of pimping,” Barrak said.
