Communist China: Missing Chinese dissident lawyer Gao Zhisheng ‘alive’
— BBC reports: “Prominent Chinese human rights lawyer Gao Zhisheng, missing for more than a year after being detained by police, has spoken to Western journalists.”
— “‘I want to live a quiet life for a while,’ said Mr Gao by telephone.”
— “He said he was living near Wutai mountain, a Buddhist landmark in northern Shanxi province.”
— “He told Reuters news agency he had been released six months ago. He was abducted by police from a relative’s house in February 2009.”
— “Reuters said it had taken steps to verify Mr Gao’s identity.”
— “Another human rights lawyer said he had spoken to Mr Gao on Sunday.”
— “Gao Zhisheng, a self-taught lawyer, has not always been at odds with the people who run China. He was once a member of the Chinese Communist Party.”
— “In 2001 he was acclaimed as one of the 10 best lawyers in the country by a publication run by the Ministry of Justice.”
— “But he ran into trouble when he started to defend some of China’s most disadvantaged groups, such as supporters of the banned spiritual movement, Falun Gong.”
— “Mr Gao’s law practice was closed down in 2005. The government said one problem was that the lawyer had failed to tell officials of a change of address.”
— “The following year he was given a suspended prison sentence for “inciting subversion”.”
— “He has previously said he had been tortured while in detention.”

Communist China thwarts Google’s detour around censorship
— AP reports: “Google’s attempted detour around China’s Internet censorship rules was met with countermeasures Tuesday by the communist government, which blocked people on the mainland from seeing search results dealing with such forbidden topics as the pro-democracy movement.”
— “On Tuesday, a search request from within mainland China about the 1989 Tiananmen democracy protests returned a notice that the ‘page cannot be displayed.’ It also caused the Web browser to disconnect for several seconds. Under the old google.cn, a similar query usually returned a list of sanitized sites about Tiananmen Square.”

Google Stops Censoring Results, Making Block by China Likely
— Bloomberg reports:
— “Google Inc., following through on a pledge to stop censoring search results in China, began serving mainland Chinese users via its unfiltered Hong Kong site, a move that could prompt the government to block the service.”
— “The company began redirecting traffic from its China Web page, Google.cn, to Hong Kong, a part of the country that isn’t subject to censorship laws. The move, which escalates a two- month dispute with the government over censorship, was ‘totally wrong,’ the official Xinhua news agency said.”
— “By relying on Hong Kong, Google is trying to find a way to fight censorship laws while still keeping a presence in mainland China. The approach may not work for long because the government is probably going to block the site, called Google.com.hk, just as it has before with the main Google.com page, said Ben Schachter, an analyst at Broadpoint AmTech Inc. in San Francisco.”
— “‘It’s very likely that Google.com.hk will be blocked at least as aggressively as Google.com was, and more likely, probably more aggressively,’ he said.”
— “The company challenged the government of the world’s most populous country in January by threatening to allow all search results to be shown on its China Web site, including references to Tibet and the Tiananmen Square crackdown. Google has about 600 employees in the country. Google.cn included the search engine, Google News and Google Images.”

Communist China – VOM: “Stop the Demolition of a Chinese Church”
Stop the Demolition of a Chinese Church |

I am writing this e-mail as an urgent call for you to speak up for our brothers and sisters in the Body of Christ who have been silenced by the Chinese government. More than 50,000 members of the Linfen Church network in China are suffering today after an unprecedented attack on one of their many branch churches. In September 2009, Chinese authorities raided a branch of the Linfen Church in Fushan, demolishing buildings and injuring more than 100 church members. Weeks later, church leaders were arrested and sentenced to prison. Now the Chinese government plans to demolish the network’s flagship church, the Jindengtang (Golden Lamp) Church building in Shanxi province. The church, which was recently constructed to house the Linfen network’s growing congregation, can seat as many as 5,000 people. Help prevent the Chinese government from destroying the Golden Lamp Church building! Join with VOM and ChinaAid Association in a campaign to prevent the demolition of this church building. Perhaps together, our voices can help save a church building that has meant so much to our persecuted brothers and sisters in this part of China. How you can help:
The Linfen Church network is an unregistered church in China that includes 50,000 members who meet in 30 different locations. The church traces its history back to the mission work of Hudson Taylor’s China Inland Mission. One branch of the church, in Fushan, was demolished by government officials last September. Ten of the church’s top leaders are currently in prison or labor camps, some sentenced to as much as seven years on the dubious charge of “disrupting local traffic order.” Now government officials have threatened to tear down the Linfen network’s flagship church, the Golden Lamp Church. This large church, with its towering steeple and cross that stand out over the city of Linfen, was built with verbal approval from local officials but without official permission from China’s Communist religious authorities. An official from the Land Resources Bureau has told a China Aid contact that the church will be destroyed. Following the attack in Fushan, the Golden Lamp Church was surrounded by military police, and church members have been barred from using the 5,000-seat church. NOW IS THE TIME to pray for and speak out on behalf of our brothers and sisters in China. Please add your voice to this rising chorus for justice. Thank you for standing with us, and with them. For those in bonds, |

Communist China: US Congress Calls for Protection of Falun Gong
On March 16, 2010, the U.S. House of Representatives had near-unanimous support in House Resolution 605 calling for protection of human rights of the Falun Gong in Communist China. [The only dissenting vote was from Representative Ron Paul (who also voted against the June 2, 2009 House Resolution 489 recognizing the 20th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre). ]
The House Resolution 605 bill was titled: “Recognizing the continued persecution of Falun Gong practitioners in China on the 10th anniversary of the Chinese Communist Party campaign to suppress the Falun Gong spriritual movement and calling for an immediate end to the campaign to persecute, intimidate, imprison, and torture Falun Gong practitioners.”
The five page House Resolution 605 bill concludes that:
Now, therefore, be it Resolved, That the House of Representatives —
(1) expresses sympathy to Falun Gong practitioners and their family members who have suffered persecution, intimidation, imprisonment, torture, and even death for the past decade solely because of adherence to their personal beliefs;
(2) calls upon the Government of the People’s Republic of China to immediately cease and desist from its campaign to persecute, intimidate, imprison, and torture Falun Gong practitioners, to immediately abolish the 6- 10 office, an extrajudicial security apparatus given the mandate to “eradicate” Falun Gong, and to immediately release Falun Gong practitioners, detained solely for their beliefs, from prisons and re-education through labor (RTL) camps, including those practitioners who are the relatives of United States citizens and permanent residents; and
(3) calls upon the President and Members of Congress to mark the 11th anniversary of Chinese official repression of the Falun Gong spiritual movement appropriately and effectively by publicly expressing solidarity with those practitioners in China persecuted solely because of their personal beliefs, and by meeting with Falun Gong practitioners whenever and wherever possible to indicate that support for freedom of conscience remains a fundamental principle of the United States Government.

AFP reports on U.S. Congressional Resolution calling for an end to Communist China’s persecution of Falun Gong:
— “WASHINGTON (AFP) – The US House of Representatives on Tuesday urged China to end its ‘persecution’ of the Falungong and rejected Beijing’s charge that the banned spiritual movement is an ‘evil cult.'”
— “In a nearly unanimous vote, the House called on China to free thousands of practitioners who are said to be imprisoned and to abolish an office tasked with fighting the Falungong.”
— “The House expressed ‘sympathy to Falungong practitioners and their family members who have suffered persecution, intimidation, imprisonment, torture and even death for the past decade solely because of adherence to their personal beliefs.'”
— “The resolution asked China to ‘immediately cease and desist from its campaign to persecute, intimidate, imprison and torture Falungong practitioners.'”
— “The measure expresses the sense of lawmakers but is not binding on Washington policymakers. China has bristled at previous resolutions on its human rights record, calling it interference in its internal affairs.”
— “Falungong — a movement loosely based on Buddhist, Taoist and Confucian philosophies that features spiritual exercises — enjoyed growing popularity among Chinese in the 1990s.”
— “China’s communist government banned the movement in 1999 and later branded it an ‘evil cult’ after thousands of practitioners silently converged in Beijing to air their grievances, showing their organizational might.”
— “‘Chinese authorities have devoted extensive time and resources over the past decade worldwide to distributing false propaganda claiming that Falungong is a suicidal and militant ‘evil cult’ rather than a spiritual movement which draws upon traditional Chinese concepts of meditation and exercise,’ the resolution said.”
— “Representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, who led the legislation, called China’s treatment of the Falungong ‘one of the most flagrant examples of systematic persecution against a particular group taking place in the world today.'”
— “‘The Beijing regime of today engages in the barbaric repression of some of its own people simply because they seek to practice a peaceful spiritual discipline,’ said the Florida congresswoman, the top Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee.”
— “Ros-Lehtinen, a longtime critic of China, pointed to allegations that Beijing has harvested organs from Falungong prisoners.”
— “‘It seems incomprehensible that in the 21st century such barbaric acts could occur — a cruelty comparable to imperial Romans throwing Christian martyrs to be eaten by lions,’ she said on the House floor.”
— “‘The stark reality which this resolution addresses gives new meaning to the phrase ‘Butchers of Beijing,'”‘ she said.”
— “A former Canadian cabinet member in 2006 authored a report that found that China harvested organs from live prisoners, mostly jailed Falungong members.”
— “China denounced the report as inaccurate and biased, saying the information came from Falungong supporters overseas.”
— “A total of 412 lawmakers voted for the resolution. Only one voted against — Republican Representative Ron Paul of Texas.”
— “Paul, a maverick former presidential candidate, routinely opposes measures which he considers interference in another nations’ internal affairs.”
— “Another 17 lawmakers did not vote.”
