VDARE Racial Hate Group Leaders Scheduled for Maryland Conference

On Halloween weekend in Lithicum, Maryland, representatives of the racist hate group VDARE will be holding a convention as part of the “H L Mencken Club.” The top billing on the HL Mencken Club’s blog for this event is VDARE leader Peter Brimelow, who will be appearing with VDARE racial writer Steven Sailer, and Patrick Buchanan among others.

On August 31, 2009 on the 70th anniversary of the beginning of World War II, Patrick Buchanan wrote an article, arguing how misunderstood Adolf Hitler was, titled “70 Years After – Did Hitler Really Want War?” (promoted on VDARE web site)

The HL Mencken Club event is also being promoted on the front page of the racist hate group VDARE web site.

The event is scheduled for Friday October 30 through Sunday November 1 at the:  The Holiday Inn (BWI),  890 Elkridge Landing Rd, Linthicum, MD 21090.  Please let the Holiday Inn BWI know how you feel about their planned hosting of this hate group speakers’ conference (Hotel Front Desk: 1-410-859-8400, Hotel Fax: 1-410-684-6778).

The VDARE Foundation has been listed as a “white nationalist” hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) , a designation that Peter Brimelow states that he is “proud” to have. VDARE’s web site has also been described by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) as “a Web site that features the work of racists, anti-Semites, and anti-immigrant figures.”

On the VDARE web site, President Obama has most recently been described as the “Half-Blood Prince” by VDARE author Steven Sailer; Peter Brimelow praises this as part of “Steve’s scholarly interest in racial differences.” VDARE’s Sailer has used the website for a litany of articles regarding race, including articles focusing on issues such as the IQ of black Americans, “white guilt,” “race denial,” endless articles on “minority mortgage meltdown,” “Anti-White Discrimination,” “Anti-White Populism,” and “On What The Census Bureau’s Projected White Minority Will Mean For America.” VDARE’s Sailer has called Barack Obama a “wigger,” and VDARE’s Peter Brimelow calls Sailer a “genius.”

VDARE defends “white separatist” Jared Taylor as someone who once would have been “called an American patriot.”    “White separatist” Jared Taylor leads the American Renaissance racial hate group whose past recent speakers have included former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke.

On June 11, 2009, the day after the Holocaust Memorial Museum shooting in Washington DC by accused gunman Von Brunn, VDARE’s Peter Brimelow posted an articlenot condemning the racial and religious hatred documented in Von Brunn’s writings and actions — but condemning those who seek to prevent hate crimes. In Peter Brimelow’s view, “drunk-driving immigrants, especially Mexicans,” are no different than those committing hate crimes based on their institutionalized hate. On June 11, 2009, while many, including Responsible for Equality And Liberty (R.E.A.L.), were mourning the death of brave black security guard Stephen Tyrone Johns, who died preventing Von Brunn from committing even a greater loss of life at the Holocaust Memorial Museum, VDARE’s Peter Brimelow was only focused on condemning those who seek to prevent future hate crimes.

VDARE’s Peter Brimelow concluded his article by asking: “The real question about the Holocaust Memorial Museum shootings: what drove James von Brunn, by all accounts an intelligent man who served his country honorably in World War II, to this terrible end?”

What type of organization views an individual accused of terrorist murder, with a history of racial supremacism, linked to neo-Nazis, and a history of Holocaust denial — as “an intelligent man” — the very day after his attack on innocent people?  ADL and SPLC have clearly answered this question: a racist hate group.

Joining this group at the H L Mencken club convention will be: NY Times’ Thomas E. Woods, Jr., Patrick Deneen, Gene Edward Veith, E. Christian Kopff, James Kurth, Lee Congdon, Kevin Gutzman, George Csatary, John Derbyshire, Richard Spencer, Jeff Frazee, professor and VDARE contributor Paul Gottfried (Gottfried: “Did Pre-MLK America Really Need Redemption?”),  and “Youth for Western Civilization” (YWC) leader Kevin DeAnna.

SPLC has charged that VDARE’s Marcus Epstein is linked to YWC, Kevin DeAnna states this is not accurate.  YWC events have previously been promoted on the American Renaissance racial hate group web site, something that YWC’s Kevin DeAnna has told R.E.A.L. that he has known nothing about.

R.E.A.L. has now contacted YWC’s Kevin DeAnna again to see if he will not attend this Lithicum, Maryland event based on the participation by these VDARE racist hate group leaders.  We will keep you posted on his reply.

You can visit the Facebook page of the  H L Mecken Club to see who is planning to attend this event where VDARE racist hate group leaders will be speaking.

DC: White Supremacist/Nazi Von Brunn Denied Release, Smiles at Mention of “Killing as Many As Possible”

AP reports:
— “An 89-year-old white supremacist charged with killing a security guard at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum was ordered to remain in jail Wednesday after prosecutors said the frail man was still dangerous because he had ‘no true friends’ and ‘nothing to lose.'”
— “A judge also ordered James von Brunn to undergo a competency evaluation despite objections from the wheelchair-bound suspect. He was otherwise nonchalant and even smiled when a prosecutor said he wanted to kill as many people as possible in the June 10 attack.”
— “In asking that von Brunn not be released, prosecutor Nicole Waid said von Brunn’s actions were clear on videotape.”
— “‘This isn’t a case of whodunit, your honor,’ Waid said.”
— “She said that though von Brunn may appear frail, he is still a danger because he ‘has no true friends’ and ‘nothing to lose.'”
— “Waid said that von Brunn arranged his finances and funeral plans before his ‘suicide mission’ at the museum, and that he wanted to kill as many people as possible.”
— “He shook his head when Waid recounted how he had once tried to kidnap members of the Federal Reserve board. He was caught outside a board meeting carrying a bag stuffed with weapons. He describes his attempt with apparent pride on his Web site. He was sentenced in 1983 to more than four years in prison for attempted armed kidnapping and other charges in his Fed assault. He was released in 1989.”
— “Von Brunn was indicted in July on charges including first-degree murder for the death of museum guard Stephen T. Johns, who was black. Four of the charges carry a possible death penalty if he’s convicted.”
— “Public records show that in 2004 and 2005 he lived briefly in Hayden Lake, Idaho, which for years was home to the Aryan Nations, a racist group run by neo-Nazi Richard Butler. He had a racist, anti-Semitic Web site and wrote a book titled ‘Kill the Best Gentiles,’ alleging a Jewish conspiracy ‘to destroy the white gene pool.’ He also claimed the Holocaust was a hoax.”

August 28: R.E.A.L. Event Challenging Racial Supremacism – Robert E. Lee Memorial “Arlington House”

On August 28 beginning at 10 AM at the Robert E. Lee Memorial “Arlington House,” Responsible for Equality And Liberty (R.E.A.L.) will be leading a public awareness event regarding the continuing challenge of racial supremacism, and proposing a new approach to encouraging racial healing in America.  This will be held on the anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.’s and other brave black Americans’ August 28 “March on Washington” . Our public awareness event at the Robert E. Lee memorial will be the first public awareness event ever held there.

Be part of this historical event!  Join us there in solidarity to promote racial harmony and our universal human rights!

Purpose of Public Awareness Event:

Our public awareness event on the continuing issue of racial supremacism will challenge the growth and the nostalgia about our national divisions, including the nostalgia regarding Confederates that is frequently leveraged by the nearly 100 Neo-Confederate and many hundreds more racial supremacist groups in America.  We have seen the tragic results of permitting such racial hate to go unchallenged by a message of love and support for our universal human rights.

We plan to call for a new direction in national healing that no longer is nostalgic about the divisions of our past,  but instead focuses on what we have in common – our universal human rights and our shared national commitment to equality and liberty as a United States of America and as human beings.

At the Robert E. Lee Memorial, we will call for the United States to create a new memorial to an idea in Washington DC on the hill that overlooks the Lincoln Memorial, where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. spoke on August 28, 1963.  We will call for a new memorial to the truth of our universal human rights of equality and liberty as individuals.    We will call for the creation of this new memorial – a Universal Human Rights Memorial – to provide a symbol of unity and love to replace the history of division and hate from the past.  We will call for the United States government to replace the Robert E. Lee memorial of the past with a monument to our Universal Human Rights of the present as an inspiration to the future.

A New Beginning America Needs

It is time to end the towering of the Robert E. Lee Memorial on the hill looking down upon the Lincoln Memorial and all other symbols of freedom in America’s capital city.  It is time for a new beginning of a new monument to our Universal Human Rights of Equality And Liberty – which will be a symbol to generations as to who and what America really is.

Women’s Equality – The Global Challenge for Our Generation

There is no challenge or priority greater for our generation larger than the continuing global oppression of women, who represent half of humanity. This challenge for women’s equality and women’s freedom must be a concerted effort by men and women together for the futures of our daughters, our sisters, our nieces, and the billions of women who are counting on our courage to defend their universal human rights. We see the oppression of women on a daily basis around the world, including the pandemic rape and sexual violence in the Congo, so-called “honor killings,” and the religious extremist and misogynist oppression of women.  We must stand united on all fronts challenging the human trafficking, oppression, sexual violence, and femicide against women around the world.

The key in this struggle for women’s equality remains consistency.

We cannot decide that women’s equality matters in some parts of the world, but not in others. Human equality is a universal human right – it applies everywhere and to everyone. We also cannot decide that we oppose women’s equality because we may not like some of the decisions some women may make if they have equality. Human equality is a universal human right – whether we like the decisions some people make as equal human beings is never an argument against equality itself.

Our hope for women’s equality lies in building communities that are willing to share our love for our fellow human beings, as well as share a consistent commitment to equality and liberty for women — in America and around the world.

Equality for Women Must Be Constitutionally Guaranteed in America

On August 26, 2009, Responsible for Equality And Liberty (R.E.A.L.) will be remembering “Women’s Equality Day” with a public awareness event on women’s equality at Washington DC’s Freedom Plaza. Women’s Equality Day commemorates the passage of the 19th Amendment, the Women’s Suffrage Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which gave U.S. women full voting rights in 1920. But nearly 90 years later, it remains a disgrace that women have not yet been given full Constitutional equality, and that must change. In the United States, we must declare unequivocally and without reservation in our Constitution that all men AND women are equal under our national law.

Such fundamental issues of women’s equality must be not the choice of “interpretations” by state governments and changing legislatures, but must be a unequivocal, Constitutional right for all American women. Such human equality is fundamental to America’s very identity as a nation, and it is a universal human right.

Therefore, it is past time for the United States government to pass and endorse the Equal Rights Amendment (E.R.A.) to guarantee such Constitutional equality for women. Every day, women in our armed forces (over 200,000) and other branches of our government work to defend a Constitution of the United States, where their inherent equality is not guaranteed. The women of America deserve better and it is our responsibility to ensure their full Constitutional equality.

To those of you unfamiliar with the Equal Rights Amendment, I urge you to read what it actually states. It states that: “Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex. The Congress shall have the power to enforce, by appropriate legislation, the provisions of this article. This amendment shall take effect two years after the date of ratification.”

The Equal Rights Amendment’s wording reflects the Constitutional language of the 19th Amendment which states: “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex. Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.”

Some will continue to make arguments that such U.S. Constitutional equality for women should not be supported through the Equal Rights Amendment because they are concerned about the impacts of such an amendment on American society. We have heard this before. Arguments against a Constitutional amendment on women’s rights as a threat to American “civilization” have been made many times – as they were against the 19th Amendment to the Constitution – giving American women the right to vote.

Those who sought to deny women the right to vote claimed that the 19th Amendment would lead to war, would undermine America’s national security, would create “mental disorder” in women, would lead to voter fraud by women, and would undoubtedly threaten women’s health as they were too “fragile” to vote. Those who sought to deny women the right to vote claimed that the 19th Amendment “would produce a nation of transvestites,” and would result in the “resignation of manhood.” Despite the claims of those who opposed the 19th Amendment, America commemorates Women’s Equality Day on August 26, remembering those American legislators and states that had the courage of their convictions to act and ensure women the right to vote through the 19th Amendment, which was finally ratified on August 18, 1920.

It is past time to complete the unfinished business on women’s Constitutional equality in America. The 19th Amendment was first ratified by Illinois, yet the Equal Rights Amendment has still not been ratified by Illinois and 14 other states today, including Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Nevada, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Utah, and Virginia. Women’s equality is a universal human right, under the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which the United States joined in adopting as part of the United Nations.  The Universal Declaration of Human Rights specifically recognizes “equal rights of men and women.”  In recognition of these universal human rights, we urge our fellow Americans to support the Equal Rights Amendment. We ask President Obama to ask his fellow citizens in Illinois and around the country, when will they ratify the Equal Rights Amendment? In the interim, we urge President Obama to show historic initiative by declaring an Executive Order recognizing the equality of women in America.

In our generational defiance of the misogynist hate against women around the world, America cannot afford to allow any exceptions, starting at home.  We cannot allow the continuing failure to have Constitutional equality of women in America as a rationalization to justify oppression of women in America or anywhere in the world.

A Global Defiance Against Misogyny – No Exceptions, No Excuses, No Rationalizations

Of all the forms of institutionalized hate that our society faces today, none is more self-destructive to the continuing survival of the fabric of humanity than the hatred of women, or misogyny.

Yet we see increasing misogynist murders, violence, hate, oppression, and intolerance growing around the world.  It is our responsibility to consistently and unceasingly defy such hate and violence against women.  We cannot leave such a world of misogyny as the legacy of our generation to our daughters, sisters, and women of the world.

If we continue to expect the least from others regarding hate and violence against women, that is precisely what we will get.  It is time to stop expecting the least from others in America and around the world regarding misogyny, and start demanding the most in terms of consistent equality, freedom, and respect for women.

How do we change public attitudes on misogyny?  We start with ourselves, our families, our neighbors, our cities, our nation, and then reach out towards the rest of the world.  We start by expecting equality for women in the workplace, in our Constitution, in our government, and in society.  We start by rejecting the idea that women are second-class citizens or second-class human beings in America or anywhere in the world.   We consciously choose a global defiance against misogynist hate – no exceptions, no excuses, and no rationalizations.  We recognize misogynist activities as precisely what they are – hate crimes.

We need to set a new standard of public rejection of misogyny as something that is always unacceptable, just as racism and any other form of institutionalized hate is always unacceptable.  In the United States, our national priorities, funding, and programs must be geared to promote equality for women and to consistently defy misogyny.

In our foreign relations, we must show a zero tolerance for misogyny, especially institutionalized misogyny.  Those nations whose leaders and governments tolerate or support hate and violence against women are rogue nations that are not, will not, and must not ever be viewed as “allies” of the United States of America.   Terrorism against women is nothing less than a declaration of war against half of humanity itself.

The New York Times recently reported that the “global statistics on the abuse of girls are numbing. It appears that more girls and women are now missing from the planet, precisely because they are female, than men were killed on the battlefield in all the wars of the 20th century. The number of victims of this routine ‘gendercide’ far exceeds the number of people who were slaughtered in all the genocides of the 20th century.”

U.S. taxpayer dollars and U.S. corporate investment must not reward nations with institutionalized hate against women.  But it does today and that must change.  While some may view such a change as “radical,” our generation must develop a culture that holds equality, freedom, and respect towards women as a basic standard of civilized human behavior.  We cannot continue to look the other way as women are murdered, mutilated, raped, and oppressed around the world.  We must develop a culture where such equality and liberty is a priority in who and what we are, not just as individuals, not just as a nation, but also in the way we relate politically and economically with the rest of the world.

Our tolerance of the oppression of girls and women in Communist China, in Saudi Arabia, and in too many nations around the world is a legacy that we must change.  In our international relations, too often we have allowed continued support of those nations that practice institutionalized hate against women, with the rationalization that we have had to make the best of bad choices.  But those bad choices set an example of how much misogyny we will tolerate, we will accept, and we will appease.   It sends a very clear message that human rights are not our top priority, and may even be our last priority.  Human rights are never our last priority; they are always are the first priority for humanity.  The dark chapter in our history that has consciously ignored such oppression of the world’s women, while doing business and funding some of the world’s worst oppressors of women’s rights must come to an end, so that we can forward together to bring equality and liberty to women around the world.

Men and women together must recognize that our “standard of living” is only as great as our “standard of human rights.”  It is our standard of human rights that defines whether we are or are not a civilized people.

We can’t buy back the human rights violations of women around the world.  No material creature comforts, momentary pleasure, or economic prosperity will ever justify one moment of inequality, degradation, oppression, or violence against women.  We need to come to the societal realization that we can’t put a price on hate and violence against women.  We need to come to the realization that no productive foreign policy, no productive national security tactic, and no political objectives of free people are ever advanced by ignoring hate and violence against women.

Our Responsibility for Women’s Equality and Liberty

Let us not deny who and what we are collectively.  Collectively, we are the ones that create the governments of the world.  Collectively, we are ones that form the corporations of the world.  Collectively, we are the races, religions, conscience, and nations of the world.  This is not someone else’s responsibility.  This is our responsibility for women’s equality and liberty.  It is our personal responsibility to challenge those who would justify or rationalize hate, violence, and oppression against women.

But if we are not consistent in our defiance against misogyny, then we will simply tell those who hate women that we just don’t tolerate hate against women in SOME instances.  That is the societal change we must affect in our generation.  A zero tolerance policy against misogyny must challenge hate against women consistently and globally.

Without a culture of zero tolerance against misogyny where will our society end up?  Reports from around the world give us a preview of the inhumanity that continues to grow on a daily basis against women.  Misogynist hate seeks to dehumanize women either through acts of war or acts of oppression.

According to V-Day reports on the Congo war, “[a]n estimated 5 million people have died here since 1996, with over 250,000 victims of rape.”  U.S. Department of State Secretary Hillary Clinton recently reported from a trip to the Congo: “Women and girls in particular have been victimized on an unimaginable scale, as sexual and gender-based violence has become a tactic of war and has reached epidemic proportions. Some 1,100 rapes are reported each month, with an average of 36 women and girls raped every day.”  This misogyny against women in Africa includes the use of rape as acts of war by military and terrorist organizations.  Regarding the ongoing war in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the United Nations reports that “the Congolese army, security sector personnel, and several armed groups still use sexual violence as a weapon of war in the DRC. Further, international actors, including UN personnel, have been implicated in perpetrating sexual violence in the DRC.”  While the United States is providing funding for medical care and support for rape victims in the Congo, it must also set expectations for President Kabila to prosecute Congo military involved in such sexual violence, and U.N. Secretary Ban to ensure action against any UN personnel involved in such sexual violence.  The violence in the Congo is linked to violence in Sudan (where a human genocide continues to rage) and Uganda on its borders.  In addition, these rapes are also performed by the Uganda rebel terrorist organization, the “Lords Resistance Army” (LRA).  The LRA terrorist organization claims to seek to create theocratic state based on the Ten Commandments, while murdering and raping other Christians and destroying their churches.  In addition to setting expectations for the Congo and U.N. leaders, we must have a continued commitment against the LRA Ugandan terrorist organization, and Christian organizations must publicly and aggressively reject the actions of the LRA.  The continuing conflicts in the Congo, Uganda, and Sudan must be a priority for Africans, Christians, Muslims and human beings around the world.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has been described by one Muslim woman as the “world’s largest prison for women,” but the endless reports of misogynist abuses by government officials and Saudi clerics has not impacted our continuing trade or support for the misogynist government of Saudi Arabia.  Some human rights organizations even continue to seek funding from within Saudi Arabia, while Saudi Arabia continues to refuse to end its segregation and oppression of women and it refuses to end child marriages. Women who have managed to escape outside of Saudi Arabia file for asylum from Saudi Arabia’s misogynist laws, including their fear of being stoned to death.  The Saudi prison state is hardly unique in the Middle East and Asia in terms of oppression of women.  Iran continues to hold women in prison for their religious beliefs, allows raping of women prisoners, and has a long history of oppression and violence against women, including stoning, with women such as Sakine Mohammadi Ashtiani awaiting death by stoning.  Across the Middle East, so-called “honor killings” of women are rampant with limited punishment of those who commit such violence, with Syria recently deciding to increase the penalty for murdering of “honor killing” of a woman from 1 year to merely 2 years in prison.  In Iraq, women are not protected as rape victims, and the “honor killing” of an Iraqi woman is punishable by 3-6 months in prison, resulting in the creation of an “underground railroad” for Iraqi women to try to escape. In Afghanistan, the government recently adopted a law permitting starvation of a Shiite Muslim woman if she doesn’t provide sex to her husband, while one cleric in Afghanistan defends marital rape as a “democratic right.” We are told by the news media that women have been prevented from voting due to the absence of segregated voting booths, rationalized by one newspaper as merely “strict cultural norms.” Women continue to live in terror in Afghanistan and Pakistan, where women are routinely murdered, mutilated, sprayed with acid, and raped based on the rationalization that they deserved to die for committing some “offense” against Islam.  Generations of women have gotten so used to being beaten, abused, and killed, some don’t even know there is anything wrong with it.  The cancer of this misogynist hate has spread from Africa’s Somalia (where a 13 year old girl was stoned to death for the “crime” of being raped, while 1,000 watched) to Europe’s Turkey (where 25 percent of the population approves of “honor killings”).  Furthermore, such “honor killings” and violence against women has spread throughout all of Europe, the United Kingdom, and into the United States of America (Indianapolis, Atlanta, Dallas, Cleveland, Buffalo).   Nor is this violence restricted only to Muslim women, as Christian women in the Middle East and Asia are frequent targets of such hate.  Egyptian Christian women are kidnapped, raped, and forced to convert to Islam.  Pakistani Christian women are tortured, stripped, raped, and burned alive by Muslims in Pakistan.  This global violence against women must be a priority for Muslims, Christians, and human beings around the world.

The consistent denial by world governments on such misogynist threats against women can be seen this week in Russia, where on Monday, August 24, 2009, Reuters reported on Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin’s visit to support Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov.  Kadyrov has been denounced by human rights organizations for Chechnya’s history of killings and kidnapping of human rights activists.  Responsible for Equality And Liberty has criticized Kadyrov since our March 2009 protest at the U.S. Capitol on International Women’s Day for his support for “honor killings” of women in Chechnya.   On February 28, 2009, AP reported that “the bullnecked president of Chechnya emerged from afternoon prayers at the mosque and with chilling composure explained why seven young women who had been shot in the head deserved to die. Ramzan Kadyrov said the women, whose bodies were found dumped by the roadside, had ‘loose morals’ and were rightfully shot by male relatives in honor killings.”  On April 7, 2009, Interfax reported that Kadyrov justified murdering women who were “promiscuous.”  Yet Russian Prime Minister Putin openly and publicly supports Ramzan Kadyrov, with no visible outcry from international women’s groups, no denunciations by the U.S. government, and no protests (yet) at the Russian Embassy.  Some view supporting Kadyrov as the best of bad choices.  But if we believe in women’s equality and liberty as a priority, we must always and consistently object to institutionalized and government support of misogyny. Turning a blind eye to hate and violence against women will never ensure security for Russia or any nation.

The magnitude of this problem cannot be effectively communicated in this brief article.  At Responsible for Equality And Liberty’s website on such violence, I was recently asked for the web link on the initial report on Buffalo’s Aasiya Zubair Hassan in mid-February and I discovered that we have 12 pages of headlines on such attacks in the past 6 months alone.  These are more than merely tragic statistics of a continuing horror story of institutionalized misogynist violence against women. Each attack was against a unique and individual girl or woman who was someone’s mother, daughter, sister, and they were loved, special human beings.  But this consistent, global war against women has yet to be prioritized by the national news media.  Such hate crimes against women are not yet a consistent priority of much of the mainstream news media.  This is precisely what we must change in being responsible for women’s equality and liberty.

Empowering Each Other to Stand United for Women’s Equality and Liberty

The problem we face in challenging misogynist hate demands accountability from the governments we elect, and the nations, races, and religious organizations we belong to.  We can bring change to our culture in support of women’s equality and liberty, but we must expect a “standard of human rights” that respects women’s equality, liberty, and dignity from all of the organizations that we are part of as individuals.

Women deserve better than this.  On this Women’s Equality Day, we must resolve to make such hate and violence against women a consistent priority for human rights groups, for women’s groups, and for each other as individuals.

We must remember that our struggle against misogynist hate and violence is based on our love for one another as fellow human beings, and not become desensitized and demoralized to believe that misogynist terrorism is nothing but statistics that we feel hopeless to change.  We must remember who and what we are working for – equality and liberty of women and each other as individual human beings.  But most of all we must work to build communities of love, building relationships with others to share our commitment for equality and liberty for women and each other.  People empower us – people inspire us – and people move us to action.  This is why we must work first in building communities of those who share our love for humanity to organize our efforts and keep working towards defending the human rights of women and all people.

Together, we can be Responsible for Equality And Liberty.

August 26 – DC Freedom Plaza – Women’s Equality Day

Thank You to all those who support our Women’s Equality Day public awareness event in Washington DC on August 26 at the Washington DC Freedom Plaza, including representative from ERA NOW, NOW Maryland, NOW Virginia, and Responsible for Equality And Liberty (R.E.A.L.).

We reached out to many people leaving work to update them on the urgent need to support Constitutional equality for all American women through the Equal Rights Amendment, which states:

“SECTION 1. Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.”

“SECTION 2. The Congress shall have the power to enforce, by appropriate legislation, the provisions of this article.”

“SECTION 3. This amendment shall take effect two years after the date of ratification.”

It is such a fundamental human right and such a simple message that R.E.A.L. was able to publish this on business card size handouts to distribute to the public!

For more information see R.E.A.L. information and postings on Constitution Equality for Women.

DC: Egyptian Coptic Christians Protest for Human Rights, Equality, as President Obama Meets Mubarak

On August 18, 2009 in Washington DC, Egyptian Christian Copts and their supporters protested on Pennsylvania Avenue and 17th Street near the White House as President Barack Obama met with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.  Protesters included Egyptian Coptic leaders representing the Coptic American organizations around the country.   Responsible for Equality And Liberty’s Jeffrey Imm and other human rights supporters also joined this protest. The August 18 protest near the White House followed an August 17, 2009 press conference by Coptic leaders at the National Press Club in Washington, DC.

During the protest, Coptic leaders called for President Obama to demand that Egyptian President Mubarak recognize the human rights and dignity of Egyptian Coptic Christians who are oppressed in Egyptian.  Speakers pointed out the ongoing oppression of Egyptian Copts, who are treated as second-class citizens, how Egyptian Copts are pressured into accepting “Islam by force,” and how Egyptian Coptic girls are kidnapped and raped.  Coptic leaders called upon Americans to contact President Obama and to contact their Congressional representatives and demand support for the human rights and freedom of religion of Christians Copts oppressed in Egypt.

Due to construction in front of the White House, the Coptic protesters gathered nearby at 17th and Pennsylvania Avenue marching in the nearby area and standing on street corners to protest the continuing oppression of the Copts, which has mostly been ignored by the American news media.

Protesters included people of all ages chanting and marching together for the human rights for the Copts, including a number of girls, boys, and small children who bravely held signs and stood responsible for Copts inalienable human rights.

Protesters chanted for freedom, equality, and justice for the Christians in Egypt, stating that “Christian blood is not cheap,” demanding an end to kidnapping and raping of Christian girls, and calling for equality for Christians in Egypt as citizens.

0818-copt-dc-0065

0818-copt-dc-0066

The Coptic protesters passed out the following flier:

“An Urgent Message to President Obama:

“Under President Mubarak The Copts, The First Egyptians, Are Treated As Last and Least”

“20 Attacks on Copts took place since Mr. Obama’s June 4th speech in Cairo”

“Mr. Mubarak is on a visit to the USA.  At the top of his agenda is promoting peace between the Israelis and the Palestinians. We wholeheartedly support his noble mission.  However, we wish to remind him that charity starts at home: The Coptic minority in his country badly needs equality, justice, and peace.”

“The Copts are the indigenous inhabitants of Egypt.  Their roots entrench as far back as the country’s recorded history.  Their number, according to church sources, is approximately 12 millions; about 15% of Egypt’s population.  However, discrimination against them is systemic and systematic.”

– “They are deliberately excluded and marginalized.  There is one Copt among the 444 elected paramilitary representatives.  They are kept below a 2% cap in posts of all State organisms (judiciary, military, police, local governance, diplomatic missions, universities, etc.).  Many posts are off-limits altogether.”

– “Freedom of belief is strictly a one-way street, favoring Islam.  A presidential decree is required to build any church and more than 100 applications to build new churches await President Mubarak’s decision.  Coptic children are indoctrinated in Islam in the Arabic language curricula, obligatory in all schools.  State-owned media promote Islam and often disparage Christianity and Judaism as ‘falsified’ religions.  Young Coptic girls legally under-age, are lured to leave their families, convert to Islam and marry Muslim men.  Muslims, who dare embrace Christianity, are denied recognition by the State (for ‘apostasy from the final and most complete belief’) and treated cruelly by the authorities.”

– “Under Mr. Mubarak’s watch, there have been over 200 documented major attacks on the Copts that resulted in loss of lives, injuries, and destruction of churches and property.  Complacent authorities often blame the victims and blackmail them to drop their complaints.  Attacks have increased in frequency and severity, as perpetrators enjoy impunity and are never punished: in fact, since President Obama’s June 4th groundbreaking speech in Cairo, at least twenty major attacks took place – including burning one church and the closure of four prayer houses.”

“The list of greivances is long.  The bottom line is that one fifth of the Copts have fled Egypt to seek a normal life elsewhere.  The remainder must be content with a second-class status.  Islam being the the official state religion, and Shari’a (Islamic law) the primary source of legislation, no wonder that citizenship is viewed through a narrow Islamic prism.”

“The Annual Report of the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom of May 2009, states: ‘Serious problems of discrimination, intolerance, and other human rights violations against members of religious minorities (…) remain widespread in Egypt.  The government has not taken sufficient steps to halt the repression of and discrimination against religious believers, including indigenous Coptic Orthodox Christians, or, in many cases, to punish those responsible for violence or other severe violations of religious freedom.’  The Commission also recommends that ‘the U.S. government urge the Egyptian government to remove de facto responsibility for religious affairs from the state security services (…)’.”

“The Copts are not seeking special privileges or compensations for centuries of discrimination and persecution.  They only demand internationally established human rights guarantees to live in their homeland as full-fledged citizens.”

“President Mubarak has, personally, a legal, political, and historical responsibility to act upon these flagrant wrongs.”

“We urge President Obama to raise this important issue with Mr. Mubarak.”

Egyptian Editor Reports: Dr. Sayed Mahmoud El Qemany Threatened by Extremists

Egyptian Editor Hassan El Helali reports that the recent winner of the Egyptian State Award for Social Sciences award, Dr. Sayed El Qemany, is being threatened with “excommunication” and “incitements to kill” by extremist individuals, leaders, and organizations, including Egyptian Grand Sheik Ali Gomaa and the Muslim Brotherhood.

According to this report, Dr. Sayed El Qemany has issued “an appeal to the world’s conscience from the Egyptian writer and academic researcher of Islamic Affairs Dr. Sayed Mahmoud El Qemany who is being exposed to incite to assassinate him.”

The reports of such extremist pronouncements and threats demonstrate the continuing threat of such organizations to freedom, equality, liberty, and democracy, and  demonstrate why those of us who support our Universal Human Rights must never endorse or legitimize engagement or negotiations with such extremists.

Please ACT TODAY to denounce such reported extremist threats against Dr. Sayed Mahmoud El Qemany.  Tell our government leaders and representatives to publicly denounce such threats and state that they must not engage with leaders and organizations that use such supremacist threats to silence those in support of freedom.  Tell our representatives that we will not sell away our Universal Human Rights to such extremist leaders and organizations, such as the Muslim Brotherhood which have demonstrated, once again, their denial of such human rights and their goal to intimidate and threaten free people into submission.

We are not afraid, we will not be threatened, and we will not submit to those who seek to take our Universal Human Rights away.

What You Can Do About It

Act today to:

1. Tell U.S. President Barack Obama that you support our Universal Human Rights, and that you call on him to publicly denounce the reports of calls for “excommunication” by the extremist Muslim Brotherhood and “incitements to kill” by leaders and organizations such as the Grand Mufti Ali Gomaa against Dr. Sayed Mahmoud El Qemany.  Tell President Obama that the Muslim Brotherhood is an extremist organization that defies our universal human rights of equality and liberty, and that uses its extremist ideology to threaten and silence others around the world.  Tell President Obama that it is essential that the United States never engages with such an anti-freedom organization.   The goals of the Muslim Brotherhood in the United States are well documented.

2. Tell your U.S. Congressional Representative that you support our Universal Human Rights, and that you expect your Congressional Representative to act publicly denounce the reports of calls for “excommunication” by the extremist Muslim Brotherhood and “incitements to kill” by leaders and organizations such as the Grand Mufti Ali Gomaa against Dr. Sayed Mahmoud El Qemany.  Tell your U.S. Congressional Representative that you expect their action to block any bills that would legitimize or promote engagement with extremist organizations such as the Muslim Brotherhood.

3. Tell your U.S. Senator that you support our Universal Human Rights, and that you expect your Senator to act publicly denounce the reports of calls for “excommunication” by the extremist Muslim Brotherhood and “incitements to kill” by leaders and organizations such as the Grand Mufti Ali Gomaa against Dr. Sayed Mahmoud El Qemany.  Tell your U.S. Senator that you expect their action to block any bills that would legitimize or promote engagement with extremist organizations such as the Muslim Brotherhood.

4. Tell the United Nations that their leaders and bodies must publicly support the Universal Human Rights that we all believe in through their action in condemning extremist organizations that share a history of denial of freedom, equality, and liberty — and that consistently threaten human rights activists around the world.  Demand that the United Nations act to publicly denounce the reports of calls for “excommunication” by the extremist Muslim Brotherhood and “incitements to kill” by leaders and organizations such as the Grand Mufti Ali Gomaa against Dr. Sayed Mahmoud El Qemany.

5. Let the “Experts” Know That Our Universal Human Rights Are a Priority.  Our representatives in government continue to be led by a series of individuals that call for engagement with the Muslim Brotherhood and Ali Gomaa. This is the same Muslim Brotherhood that is calling for “excommunication” of Dr. Sayed Mahmoud El Qemany.  This is the same Grand Mufti Ali Gomaa that is supporting “incitements to kill” against Dr. Sayed Mahmoud El Qemany.   Let them know you won’t stay silent any longer as they offer “expert” advice that undermines our Universal Human Rights, by legitimizing and supporting engagement with the Muslim Brotherhood and other groups.

Tell George Mason University Professor Peter Mandaville that you reject his calls to the U.S. West Point Combating Terrorism Center (p.5) to call for engaging with Muslim Brotherhood groups on U.S. counterterrorism solutions — our support for our Universal Human Rights comes first!

Tell the U.S. Muslim-Engagement Project that you reject their call for “engagement” with the Muslim Brotherhood in their September 2008 report “Changing Course” (pages 54, 56, 60, 61) — our support for our Universal Human Rights comes first!

Tell Republican U.S. Senator Richard Lugar that you reject his call for supporting the U.S. Muslim-Engagement Project calling for “engagement” with the Muslim Brotherhood — our support for our Universal Human Rights comes first!

Tell Democratic U.S. Congressman Howard Berman that you reject his call for supporting the U.S. Muslim-Engagement Project calling for “engagement” with the Muslim Brotherhood — our support for our Universal Human Rights comes first!

6.  Sign Our Online Petition Letting the World Know You Stand Up for Human Rights! Our online petition defends our universal human rights against the growing threat of extremist organizations, and that we defy those extremist groups that would threaten Dr. Sayed Mahmoud El Qemany or any fellow human being that seeks freedom of thought and freedom of conscience — simply because we share the same universal human rights — and attack on their human rights – is an attack on our human rights.  We are Responsible for Equality And Liberty!

Hassan El Helali reports:
“An appeal to the world’s conscience from the Egyptian writer and academic researcher of Islamic Affairs Dr. Sayed Mahmoud El Qemany who is being exposed to incite to assassinate him.”

“In the context of my academic research and practical work I have been able to provide an important set of motion in the stagnant Egyptian situation. I have attempted to make reforms from the inside and worked on the disarmament of those who exploit Islam politically and make it a source of livelihood at the expense of simple good people of Egypt. I have therefore created a secular movement that has imposed its presence, although still at a formative stage.”

“In a free ballot of Egyptian thinkers, I was granted the State Award for Social Sciences, on June 25th 2009. The hard-line radical militant groups considered that the state has adopted this intellectual secular trend officially, infuriating the mentioned group which called on the State to withdraw the prize with the declaration of my defection from Islam and excommunication which means in our country, I could be slain; any citizen is allowed to kill me and be awarded by God in Paradise.”

“The following parties have participated in the statements of atonement, noting that none of them have read a single word of what I wrote, and have not been able to hold a dialogue to discuss my ideas.”

“1 – Al-Azhar Scholars Front headed by Yahya Ismail Habloush, which issued the first statement of atonement on July 10, 2009”
“2 – The Islamic Group (condemned terrorist group) issued a statement of atonement on July 10, 2009”
“3 – The Muslim Brotherhood hailed the atonement, and were presented at the parliament by Hamdi Hassan requesting the withdrawal of the award and the declaration of religious-defection and excommunication on July 7, 2009. The Muslim Brotherhood also declared my excommunication on Mohwar Channel on July 11, 2009 and on Al Faraeen Channel on July 13, 2009”
“4 – The Salafi (Fundamentalist) Group (condemned terrorist group) dedicated its Internet site named ‘The Egyptians’ for excommunicating me and incitements to kill me, since the date of obtaining the prize until today.”
“5 – Al Nas channel, which represents the theoretical side of bloody terrorism which declared excommunication and demanded ‘all citizens who can’ to kill me immediately, on July 24 and 25, 2009.”
“6 – The Hisbah Sheikh Youssef Al Badri in Egypt declared on the channel ‘ON TV’ on July 3, 2009 that I have cursed God and the Prophet Mohammad in my books even though I have challenged him and others to refer to a single text written by me where such claims were made. Due to this proclamation, he has issued an incitement to kill me.”
“7 – A member of the Al-Azhar scholars, Sheikh Mohammed El Berry, on Mihwar TV Channel on July 11, 2009 announced my atonement as he also said that he did not read any of my writings since he does not read ‘garbage’. He repeated the same words on the channel ‘ON TV’ on July 22, 2009.”
“8 – Sheikh Ali Gomaa, the former Chairman of the ‘State Religious Affairs Advisory Board’, issued a statement declaring my infidelity and calling for slaying me for ‘insulting the Prophet of Islam, the God of Islam’ on July 24, 2009.”
“9 – The Sheiks of more than 5000 mosques on Friday prayers on July 24, 2009 declared the incitement to kill me, especially in my hometown, which led to the rampage against my family and relatives, and that could possibly evolve to some serious consequences in the coming weeks.”

“Due to the above, I call upon the conscience of all humanity in the free world to come to me and my children’s rescue by providing moral support and the condemnation and denunciation of the radical thinking with quick solutions to save us from the danger that is luring around us.”

“This is a distress call to all bodies and individuals. A call to the consciences of every free individual in the world.”

Canada: Hizb ut-Tahrir (HT) Group to Meet in Govt-Managed Community Center

On Friday, July 31, 2009, the religious extremist organization Hizb ut-Tahrir will be holding another public conference, this time in the Ontario, Canada city of Mississauga.  Unlike the July 19, 2009 Hizb ut-Tahrir conference which was held at a private facility in Chicago suburb Oak Lawn’s Hilton Hotel, the Canadian Hizb ut-Tahrir meeting will be held at a Canadian government-managed public facility, the Mississauga Valley Community Center.

1. Hizb ut-Tahrir Seeks to Promote Extremism in Canada

The Hizb ut-Tahrir (HT) Canadian event is publicized on the Hizb ut-Tahrir web site as being sponsored by “Hizb ut-Tahrir Canada” as part of HT’s “2009 Khilafah Campaign,” which included the July 19, 2009 HT event in the Chicago Oak Lawn, IL suburb.  HT has advertised this event to be held at the Canadian govt-managed facility in Mississauga for: “Friday, July 31st, 6.30PM to 8.30PM, Frank Bean Lounge — Mississauga Valley Community Center, 1275 Mississauga Valley Blvd, L5A 3R8.”   The HT Canada event has also been promoted by a Toronto, Canada website called “TorontoMuslims.com”.  (R.E.A.L. contacted this Toronto Muslim website to ask why they were promoting such an extremist organization’s event, and received no reply.)

The Hizb ut-Tahrir web site promoting the July 31 event in Canada also promotes a pamphlet (page 62) that supports killing those individuals who leave Islam as guilty of “treason and a political attack on the Khilafah.”

According to the Canadian Criminal Code Section 318:

“318. (1) Every one who advocates or promotes genocide is guilty of an indictable offence and liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years.”
“(2) In this section, ‘genocide’ means any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy in whole or in part any identifiable group, namely,”
“(a) killing members of the group; or”
“(b) deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction…”
“(4) In this section, ‘identifiable group’ means any section of the public distinguished by colour, race, religion, ethnic origin or sexual orientation.”

Researcher Madeleine Gruen believes that U.S. member of HT Mohammad Malkawi may speak at the Canadian conference, because Mohammad Malkawi has previously given speeches in Canada.  HT’s Mohammad Malkawi moderated the July 19 HT conference in Chicago suburb of Oak Lawn.

2. Efforts to Alert Canadian Government Agencies to HT Supremacist Meeting at Govt-Managed Facility

Responsible for Equality And Liberty (R.E.A.L.) has attempted to contact the Mississauga government to make them aware of the supremacist nature of the Hizb ut-Tahrir organization that it has rented use of the Mississauga Valley Community Centre Frank Bean Lounge facility to for their July 31 conference.  After speaking to a representative at the Community Centre (905-615-4670), we were re-directed to the Mississauga government agency involved in booking the Frank Bean Lounge facility, the Mississauga government recreation and parks department (905-615-4100, choose “facility booking”).

R.E.A.L.’s Jeffrey Imm spoke to a manager with the  Mississauga recreation and parks department on this, and she stated that they are “looking into this.”  The Mississauga recreation and parks manager also stated the person who made the booking of the Frank Bean Lounge facility for the Canadian Hizb ut-Tahrir meeting had held “previous meetings” there, and Mississauga “never had any problems or issues” with them.  On the Mississauga web site regarding renting such facilities, one of the primary concerns is the use of such facilities in terms of serving alcoholic beverages.

In addition, R.E.A.L.’s Jeffrey Imm contacted the diversity relations unit of Mississauga local law enforcement — highlighting that the group promoting the Canadian HT event – is also promoting a brochure that calls for the death penalty for Muslims who leave Islam as guilty of “treason and a political attack on the Khilafah” (page 62).

3. Contact Canadian and Mississauga Legislators

We urge those concerned about the growing threat of the Hizb ut-Tahrir supremacist movement and its efforts to justify violence against those who seek freedom of religion to contact Canadian and Mississauga legislators to voice their outrage about this supremacist group using a Mississauga facility.  Apparently, this is not the first time such proponents of Hizb ut-Tahrir’s supremacist ideology have used Canadian public facilities either.  Contact Canadian and Mississauga government officials to get an answer as to why Canadian public facilities are being used to spread such supremacist hate.

4. Canada Supremacist Meeting Part of Global Efforts Against Freedom

The extremist Hizb ut-Tahrir (HT) group has been seeking to have international meetings to promote the creation of an international, supremacist caliphate.  In addition to the July 31 scheduled conference in Mississauga, Canada, HT has met on July 19 in the United States, had a meeting on July 26 in London, and has another upcoming meeting on August 2 in West Bromwich, UK.

At the July 19 meeting at the Chicago Oak Lawn suburb, HT publicly promoted its goal as the “supremacy” of its view of Islam.  HT speaker Dr. Jaleel Abdul-Adil called for conference attendees to achieve such a supremacist caliphate, work towards making Islam “supreme on this earth,” or to “die in the attempt.”  HT justified its supremacist views by stating “every group tries to expand its influence,” while distributing a pamphlet to conference attendees that justified killing Muslims who choose to leave Islam.

The pamphlet ” ‘Islamic Reformation’ – Exposing the Battle for Hearts and Minds” distributed by the HT at the July 19 Oak Lawn, IL conference is also being distributed at the same HT website promoting the Canadian conference scheduled for July 31.

The HT pamphlet mocks human rights, freedom, equality, and justifies killing Muslims who choose to leave Islam.  It is designed to reject the concept of any type of “Islamic reformation” demanding instead the creation of a supremacist caliphate.  The HT pamphlet mocks the efforts by Canadian Islamic reformer Irshad Manji (page 6), condemns “Women’s groups engaged in gender equality campaigns” (page 13), claims that challenging the Taliban’s rejection of human rights was merely a ploy “to attack Islam” (page 16), mocks “The Fallacy of Western Universalism” (page 21), mocks “allegedly universal values of secularism, freedom, democracy, Human Rights, pluralism, and the rule of law” (page 23), calls for “Shari’ah rule” (page 39),  and demands separate laws for men and women.

The HT brochure defends the death penalty for so-called “apostates” – who leave Islam (pages 62 and 68).  On page 62, HT justifies killing other Muslims who leave Islam because HT views such Muslims as guilty of “treason.” (W. Heffening and others have stated that such calls for killing ex-Muslims is based on the opinions of others, not based on direct calls from the Qu’ran.)

The HT brochure rejects human equality stating (page 64), “Equality is not the basis of Islam and never has been in the history of Islamic jurisprudence. This is a term alien to Islam.”

In the most recent July 26 London meeting, HT claimed that “thousands” attended its London conference, where HT attacked U.S. President Obama as seeking to “reinterpret the Qu’ran.”  In August 2007, Barack Obama identified as America’s enemies those who would create “a repressive caliphate.”   Such a  supremacist caliphate is the primary organizational objective of Hizb ut-Tahrir.

5. Extremist Hizb ut-Tahrir Groups Condemned by Muslims

The extremist Hizb ut-Tahrir group has also been condemned by various Muslims around the world.

Dr. Zuhdi Jasser, President of The American Islamic Forum for Democracy (AIFD) has stated that “Hizb ut-Tahrir’s actions, ideologies and mission are unacceptable” to Muslims.

Junaid Afeef, executive director of the Council of Islamic Organizations of Greater Chicago, has stated that Hizb ut-Tahrir is “antithetical to what we believe.”

British Muslim Ed Husain, a former member of the Hizb ut-Tahrir, states in his book “The Islamist” that “Hizb ut Tahrir calls for an expansionist, violent, totalitarian Islamist state” and that HT’s “mindset”…  “does not recognize the sacred nature of human life.”  Ed Husain says that, under HT’s ideology, “entire populations would submit to an army of the caliph, or face extinction.”   Ed Husain’s book quotes Hizb ut-Tahrir  founder Taqiuddin al-Nabhani: “The Islamist does not flatter the people, is not courteous to the authorities or care for the people’s customs and traditions, and does not give any attention to whether people will accept him or not.”

6. R.E.A.L. on the History of Hizb ut-Tahrir (HT)

At the July 19 Oak Lawn, IL pro-freedom conference challenging Hizb ut Tahrir, Responsible for Equality And Liberty (R.E.A.L.)’s Jeffrey Imm spoke to Chicago area protesters about Hizb ut-Tahrir’s history and goals.   He explained Hizb ut-Tahrir’s (HT) history since 1953 in seeking to develop an international organization to implement a supremacist caliphate, and how Hizb ut-Tahrir has been building an organization for the past 10 years covertly in America.  The July 19 Oak Lawn conference, Imm stated, represented Hizb ut-Tahrir America’s (HTA) belief that they can now begin their more public “Stage Two” (as described in the HT manifesto) of their process of developing a supremacist caliphate.  This “Stage Two” represented HT’s belief that a public outreach to their objectives for promoting such a caliphate should now be initiated.

Imm also pointed to the ultimate objective of the HT’s supremacist caliphate to create a multi-national “state” that would allow them to further promote and enforce supremacist rule through this “caliphate.”  To that end, HT’s manifesto rejects what they call “Democratic Capitalism,” which is how HTA managed to manipulate the public and the press into believing their July 19 Oak Lawn conference was merely about “economics,” by titling their conference “The Fall of Capitalism and the Rise of Islam.”

In fact, Imm addressed that HT is opposed not only to capitalism, but also to democracy itself.   Referencing direct quotes from the HT’s manifesto, Imm pointed out that HT states that:

— “the democratic system… is a Kufr [infidel] system” (page 25)

— rejects democracy because it “is the rule of people, for the people, by the people” (page 24)

— “Democratic Capitalism” … “is a Kufr ideology and its ideas are Kufr ideas, and its systems are Kufr systems, and they contradict Islam” (page 24)

— “freedom of belief, freedom of speech, freedom of ownership of capital and personal freedom”… “are in conflict with Islam” (page 24)

— “personal freedom does not exist in Islam” (page 24)

— “liberty and democracy, and the Capitalist and Socialist systems… totally contradict with” Islam (page 7)

— freedom of religion is denied by HT, whose manifesto states the “Muslim is not free in the matter of his belief because if he apostasizes from Islam, he is asked to return.  If he does not, the punishment is death” (page 24)

Regarding HT’s support for a supremacist caliphate, Imm pointed out that while the immediate stated goal of HT was the creation of a supremacist caliphate in so-called “Muslim countries,” the longer term goal was to use this international caliphate to further spread supremacism around the world.  To that end, Imm pointed out the goals of the HT are to create a supremacist caliphate army, and calls for “every Muslim male at age 15 must be given jihad training” (page 37).   Moreover, as HT has told the press, once the supremacist caliphate was in place, nations “allowed” to continue to be “non-Muslim” would have the choice of paying a tax to the supremacist caliphate, or according to HT “if non-Muslim countries refused to pay the tax, the caliphate would launch military attacks against them.”

Chicago’s Moment of Freedom: Chicagoans Stand Up for Freedom Challenging Hizb ut-Tahrir

On July 19, 2009 in the Chicago suburb of Oak Lawn, Illinois, Chicagoans and other Americans defied the anti-democracy, anti-freedom Hizb ut-Tahrir organization by staging a pro-freedom, pro-democracy protest.  The protest was organized by Responsible for Equality And Liberty (R.E.A.L.) founder Jeffrey Imm in response to the conference held at the Oak Lawn Hilton by Hizb ut-Tahrir to promote its vision of a global extremist caliphate that rejects freedom and democracy.

A.  Chicago’s Pro-Freedom, Pro-Democracy Protesters Come to the Streets

Dozens of pro-freedom and pro-democracy protesters came from early morning through the late afternoon to demonstrate their support for freedom and democracy in the Chicago suburb.  In addition to handing out informational fliers about “Why We Challenge Hizb ut Tahrir,” protesters also chanted in support of democracy and freedom, and showed their commitment to universal human rights.

Pro-democracy protesters also rejected the view by Hizb ut-Tahrir America (HTA) conference that democracy is “backward and  primitive”  in HTA pamphlets distributed at the Oak Lawn conference.

Some had just learned about the Hizb ut-Tahrir event that morning on the news through Jeffrey Imm’s interview on Fox News that Sunday morning (click on link for online video).  They came with the most visible symbol of democracy that they could find – the American flag.

While pro-freedom protesters took to the streets of Oak Lawn to support democracy, retired members of the U.S. military also rode in on motorcycles to demonstrate their support for democracy and freedom as well.   The peaceful protest allowed those in support of democracy and freedom to provide a counter-message to that being promoted by Hizb ut-Tahrir of religious extremism.

This counter-message of the protest was one of support for the Universal Human Rights of Equality and Liberty to challenge Hizb ut-Tahrir’s support for Universal Religious Extremism.

B.  R.E.A.L. Addresses the History of Hizb ut-Tahrir (HT)

R.E.A.L.’s Jeffrey Imm spoke to the volunteer protesters, many of whom just learned about the Hizb ut-Tahrir event that morning.   He explained Hizb ut-Tahrir’s (HT) history since 1953 in seeking to develop an international organization to implement an extremist caliphate, and how Hizb ut-Tahrir has been building an organization for the past 10 years covertly in America.  The July 19 Oak Lawn conference, Imm stated, represented Hizb ut-Tahrir America’s (HTA) belief that they can now begin their more public “Stage Two” (as described in the HT manifesto) of their process of developing an extremist caliphate.  This “Stage Two” represented HT’s belief that a public outreach to their objectives for promoting such a caliphate should now be initiated.

Imm also pointed to the ultimate objective of the HT’s extremist caliphate to create a multi-national “state” that would allow them to further promote and enforce extremist rule through this “caliphate.”  To that end, HT’s manifesto rejects what they call “Democratic Capitalism,” which is how HTA managed to manipulate the public and the press into believing their July 19 Oak Lawn conference was merely about “economics,” by titling their conference “The Fall of Capitalism and the Rise of Islam.”

In fact, Imm addressed that HT is opposed not only to capitalism, but also to democracy itself.   Referencing direct quotes from the HT’s manifesto (alternate link), Imm pointed out that HT states that:

Regarding HT’s support for an extremist caliphate, Imm pointed out that in August 2007, Barack Obama also stated that he viewed as America’s enemies those who “seek to create a repressive caliphate.”  Imm pointed out that while the immediate stated goal of HT was the creation of an extremist caliphate in so-called “Muslim countries,” the longer term goal was to use this international caliphate to further spread supremacism around the world.  To that end, Imm pointed out the goals of the HT are to create an extremist caliphate army, and calls for “every Muslim male at age 15 must be given jihad training” (page 37alternate link).   Moreover, as HT has told the press, once the extremist caliphate was in place, nations “allowed” to continue to be “non-Muslim” would have the choice of paying a tax to the extremist caliphate, or according to HT “if non-Muslim countries refused to pay the tax, the caliphate would launch military attacks against them.”

Imm also addressed comments made by Muslim Ed Husain, a former member of the Hizb ut Tahrir, in Husain’s book “The Islamist.” Imm pointed out that Ed Husain states that “Hizb ut Tahrir calls for an expansionist, violent, totalitarian Islamist state” and that HT’s “mindset”…  “does not recognize the sacred nature of human life.”  Ed Husain says that, under HT’s ideology, “entire populations would submit to an army of the caliph, or face extinction.”   Imm also pointed out that Ed Husain’s book quotes Hizb ut-Tahrir  founder Taqiuddin al-Nabhani: “The Islamist does not flatter the people, is not courteous to the authorities or care for the people’s customs and traditions, and does not give any attention to whether people will accept him or not.”

Imm read R.E.A.L.’s “Why We Challenge Hizb ut Tahrir” to the protesters, mentioning the reports of hate and calls for violence by HT members in speeches and their pamphlets, despite’s HT’s claims to be against violence.  Imm mentioned BBC’s reports that HT “has expressed support of suicide bombings in Israel,” and the Daily Telegraph report that “The Panorama program on BBC television uncovered a speech made in August 2006 by Ata Abu-Rishta, the global leader of Hizb ut-Tahrir, when he called for the ‘destruction’ of Hindus living in Kashmir, Russians in Chechnya and Jews in Israel.”   This same report stated that “Omar Shariff, the first UK suicide bomber, who blew himself up in a Tel Aviv bar in 2003, is alleged to have been radicalised by Hizb ut Tahrir.”  He also referenced a report which stated that Khalid Sheik Mohammed and Abu Musab al-Zarqawi were former members of Hizb ut Tahrir.

The women were forced to segregate themselves and sit in the back of the conference room behind the men.  The conference appeared to have mostly American attendees although there were some foreign attendees as well.  The moderator was Mohammed Malkawi.  Two of the main speakers were British HT leader Burhan Hanif and American Dr. Jaleel Abdul-Adil (who described himself as a “former clinical psychologist”).

Some protesters also went in to the Hizb ut-Tahrir conference to ask questions during the public question and answer periods of the conference.  Their questions were challenged and revealed the extremist nature of Hizb ut-Tahrir’s conference.

R.E.A.L.'s Jeffrey Imm Waiting to Query Hizb ut-Tahrir Leaders at Conference
R.E.A.L.'s Jeffrey Imm Waiting to Query Hizb ut-Tahrir Leaders at Conference

R.E.A.L.’s Jeffrey Imm attended the end of the final session “The Rise of Islam” prior to Question and Answer period.  When going into the conference, each participant received a package from HTA which included:  HTA Conference Agenda, HT glossy pamphlet ” ‘Islamic Reformation’ – Exposing the Battle for Hearts and Minds,” HT flier, and CDs “An Outcry to the Islamic Ummah – For How Much Longer?!” and “The Shield – Islamic Commentary on the State of the Muslims.”

The glossy pamphlet ” ‘Islamic Reformation’ – Exposing the Battle for Hearts and Minds” distributed by the HTA at the Oak Lawn, IL conference was designed to reject the concept of any type of “Islamic reformation” demanding instead the creation of a caliphate.  The HTA pamphlet mocked the efforts by Islamic reformer Irshad Manji (page 6), claimed that challenging the Taliban’s rejection of human rights was merely a ploy “to attack Islam” (page 16), mocks “The Fallacy of Western Universalism” (page 21), mocks “allegedly universal values of secularism, freedom, democracy, Human Rights, pluralism, and the rule of law” (page 23), calls for “Shari’ah rule,” demanded separate laws for men and women, and defends the death penalty for “apostates” – who leave Islam (pages 62 and 67).

Regarding the killing of those who seek freedom of religion and choose to leave Islam, the HTA-distributed pamphlet states:  “Apostasy is a question of what kind of person would openly and publicly abandon Islam with full knowledge that they will be killed for it, rather than either keeping it to themselves or leave the Khalifah. Hence, the death penalty only applies on those who in Khalifah openly leave Islam, and choose to remain in the state despite knowing the law; this is considered an open attack on the basis of the state which is Islam, essentially it is viewed as treason and a political attack on the Khalifah in order to undermine it.”

Another Hizb ut-Tahrir web site promoting the July 19 event in Chicago also promotes an online copy of this same pamphlet (page 62) that supports killing those individuals who leave Islam as guilty of “treason and a political attack on the Khilafah.”

The final session of the HTA conference “The Rise of Islam” focused on the supremacy of Islam demanding that attendees respect the “supremacy” of Islam towards building a global caliphate. The speakers stated that this supremacism was “not the historical form” of supremacism which created oppression, but claimed that supremacism would not be oppressive [despite rejecting democracy, human rights, and freedom].

The speakers indicated that the goal today was a “political struggle in Muslim worlds,” “not trying to infiltrate” non-Muslim governments, but to demonstrate why “the world should welcome the rise of Islam” through the creation of an international extremist caliphate.

The speakers demanded that the attendees dedicate their lives to the creation of this extremist caliphate “until Islam is victorious or we die in the attempt.”  The speakers also rationalized “suicide bombings” are “just a reaction to oppression.”  The HTA speakers stated that they are seeking an “ideological war.”

The HTA conference speakers justified the goal of an extremist caliphate taxing “non-Muslim” nations in the future (“jizya” to non-Muslims or “dhimmis”)  by saying that the “taxes [that dhimmis] would pay would be much cheaper.”

During questions and answer period, three pro-freedom individuals asked questions to the HTA speakers.  One asked what would happen if the U.S. was brought into the caliphate, and was told that the U.S. Constitution would be eliminated.  Another person asked about what such a caliphate would mean to Christians currently enjoying freedoms in the West, and was answered by HTA speakers that “freedoms would look very different for those who live under the caliphate,” and that “people would prefer living under a caliphate adminstration.”  Finally, R.E.A.L.’s Jeffrey Imm asked that given the HT called for non-Muslim nations to pay a tax to an Islamic caliphate or else the caliphate would go to declare war on them, how does that make supremacism any different from any other form of extremist oppression?  After much hesitation in getting an HTA speaker to respond, eventually UK’s HT leader Burhan Hanif answered by merely stating “every ideology tries to expand its influence.”

D.  A Monument to Human Courage in Chicago

R.E.A.L.’s Jeffrey Imm pointed out to the pro-freedom protesters standing defiantly in support of democracy, equality, and liberty that they were making history that July 19, and that they should be proud of their willingness to come out, protest, and challenge those extremists who seek the destruction of freedom and democracy.  Imm said that “Washington DC has its marble monument to freedom in the Lincoln Memorial, New York City has its steel structure to liberty in the Statue of Liberty, but here in Chicago, this day, you should remember that you created a living monument to freedom and democracy with your courageous stand here today. We have shown that we can do something about those who would defy democracy and liberty.  We have shown that we as individuals can be Responsible for Equality And Liberty.  The world is watching – we are here protesting in defense of democracy and freedom for those struggling for freedom around the world who don’t have a voice.  You gave those people around the world a new hope today.  We and others around the nation and the world will remember this protest, and will remember that in Chicago on July 19, people stood up in defense of democracy and freedom.”

As the Hizb ut-Tahrir members ended their conference, and came out defiantly waving their Black Flag of the extremist caliphate, R.E.A.L.”s Jeffrey Imm urged the protesters not to be goaded, and led them instead to chant “We Support Democracy, We Support Freedom.”
