Saudi Cleric Calls for Gender Segregation or Death: Shaikh Abdul-Rahman al-Barrak

Saudi cleric backs gender segregation with fatwa

A prominent Saudi cleric has issued an edict calling for opponents of the kingdom’s strict segregation of men and women to be put to death if they refuse to abandon their ideas.

Shaikh Abdul-Rahman al-Barrak said in a fatwa the mixing of genders at the workplace or in education “as advocated by modernisers” is prohibited because it allows “sight of what is forbidden, and forbidden talk between men and women.”

” Whoever allows this mixing … allows forbidden things, and whoever allows them is an infidel and this means defection from Islam … Either he retracts or he must be killed … because he disavows and does not observe the Shariah “

“All of this leads to whatever ensues,” he said in the text of the fatwa published on his website (albarrak.islamlight.net).

“Whoever allows this mixing … allows forbidden things, and whoever allows them is an infidel and this means defection from Islam … Either he retracts or he must be killed … because he disavows and does not observe the Shariah,” Barrak said.

“Anyone who accepts that his daughter, sister or wife works with men or attend mixed-gender schooling cares little about his honor and this is a type of pimping,” Barrak said.

Austin, Texas: “Hero” Murdered by Man Crashing Plane in Terror Attack on IRS

Additional reports are coming in regarding the victim of Joe Stack’s terrorist attack on the U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) office in Austin, Texas.   Austin’s Joe Stack crashed his plane into a federal building on February 18, 2010, killing himself and 67-year-old IRS worker Vernon Hunter.

The murdered IRS worker, Vernon Hunter, was described by a neighbor as “proud Vietnam Vet and a great neighbor,” as well as a “real tender guy.”

The American Statesman also reports: “police delivered Hunter’s Chevy Silverado truck, emblazoned with Vietnam Veteran and POW MIA emblems, to the home. Hunter served in Vietnam and often spoke of his time during the war, neighbors said.”

“Robert Foster, who has lived near Hunter for about 10 years, said that he knew Hunter was a veteran and wanted to honor him with his American flag. ‘Out of respect to him, when I came out this morning, I put my flag out,’ Foster said. ‘You could talk to him about anything. He always had a smile.’

“He was known to friends, co-workers and relatives as the one who gave. Hunter is also described as a devout Christian and father of six grown children who loved his white cowboy hat. At Greater Mount Zion Baptist Church in East Austin, where Hunter served as a lead usher, news of the tragedy weighed heavily.”

“‘We’re devastated,’ said Brian Balque, facilities manager at the church.”

“Balque said that Hunter had set up the church’s tax ministry, helping members and local residents with their taxes. ‘He had a servant’s heart,’ Balque said. ‘He represented what we stand for as a church, a kind word and a warm spirit.'”

“Balque said Hunter’s wife, who also works at the same IRS building and was there when the plane struck, called the church in the minutes afterward asking for prayers for her husband.”

KENS 5 News reports that: “Ken calls his father a real American patriot; a man who decided to serve his country as a soldier, putting his life in danger to defend freedom at a time when other men his age were dodging the draft.”

“In the same breath, Ken calls his father’s attacker, Joe Stack, a coward.”

“Ken has read posts on-line calling Stack a ‘hero’ who ‘struck a blow against the government.’  He knows of the sites set up on web pages like Facebook.com where people have memorialized Stack and written tributes to him.”

“Ken sees no honor in what Stack did.”

“He sees no honor in a man trying to burn down his own home….  He sees no honor in a man who can’t pay his taxes but owns a plane, deciding to fly that plane into a building in an effort to claim innocent lives.”

“He sees no honor in anything that Joseph Stack did on Thursday.”

“All he sees now is a life cut short.  The life of a retired Vietnam veteran and grandfather who will never see his six grandchildren grow up.”

Washington DC: Sudan Rights Activists Speak Out on Darfur – Despite the Snow

As the International Criminal Court ruled that Sudan President Omar al-Bashir may be charged with genocide, Damanga, Sudan human rights activists, and their supporters rallied in Washington DC at the Capitol and the White House on February 3, 2010.  The Sudan human rights activists supporters called for the U.S. Congress, President Obama, and Vice President Biden to do more to end the genocide in Darfur and Sudan.  Activists at the rallies came from around the country, including some from San Francisco, California.

At the Capitol, Damanga’s Mohamed Yahya spoke about the current situation in Darfur and why every day mattered, calling for U.S. Congressional representatives to take action on Darfur.

Major issues addressed by Damanga at the Capitol rally included topics such as urging the U.S. government and Obama adminstration to:

* STOP ICC-indicted President Omar Al-Bashir’s bid for re-election
* STOP sentence issuance for Darfuri Opposition Leaders without guaranteeing them rights to a fair trial
* STOP unfair elections & promote free and legitimate FUTURE elections including a freed Darfur.
* CANCEL the Doha Negotiotians for Peace that lack proper Darfuri representation
* IMPLEMENT UNSC Res.1769 that calls for 26,000 UN troops to be deployed to Darfur.
* REMOVE Arab Janjaweed and their families out of Darfuri land.
* GUARANTEE PROTECTION and compensation for Darfuri villagers wanting to return to their homes.
* ALLOW expelled humanitarian organizations back in Darfur to help genocide victims
* CLARIFY the US policy towards Darfur.

Responsible for Equality And Liberty (R.E.A.L.)‘s Jeffrey Imm called upon the American people to realize that we cannot tolerate another day of genocide in the Sudan, and that stopping genocide is the responsibility of every human being as part of our shared responsibility for equality and liberty for each other, stating that in the face of genocidal conflict, “we are all Darfurians.”

After the Capitol rally, many of the activists then marched to the White House, where the rally continued.

At the White House, Ms. Niemat Ahmadai with the Darfur Women Action Group spoke out in support calling for action to protect the Sudanese people and calling for an end to the Genocide in Darfur.   Mr. Khalid Graise, Director, Nubia Forum of North Sudan, also spoke calling for the the international community to support the ICC’s warrant against Sudanese President Al-Bashir.  Damanga’s Mohamed Yahya had a message for President Barack Obama asking him not to forget his campaign promises to take action in Darfur.

The Obama campaign had stated that: “As president, Obama will take immediate steps to end the genocide in Darfur by increasing pressure on the Sudanese and pressure the government to halt the killing and stop impeding the deployment of a robust international force.”

After the rally, Damanga’s Mohamed Yahya sought to present a letter to U.S. President Obama at the White House to address Damanga and other Darfur human rights activists concerns on Darfur and Sudan.   The U.S. Secret Service could not accept the physical letter at the gate, and Mohamed Yahya agreed to fax the letter to President Obama.

Mr. Yahya thanked the activists for coming out in the winter weather for the Capitol and White House rallies, and appreciated their friendship.  He also thanked American people and people around the world, including the Jewish and Christian communities, that have come out to support the Sudanese people on the issue of human rights in Darfur.  Mr. Yahya hoped that the in the future, rather than future rallies, we could get together to celebrate the end of Al-Bashir’s crimes against the Darfur and Sudanese people and that we could celebrate freedom and human rights for all in the Sudan.

Damanga Letter to President Obama – HTML Version, Microsoft Word Version

Letter to President Barack Obama

The Honorable Barack Obama

President of the United States

The White House

1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W

Washington DC, 20500

January 31, 2010

Dear Mr. President,

We, the Undersigned people from Darfur, along with our fellow Sudanese brothers and sisters and American activists working in solidarity, would like to thank you and the people of America for your voiced commitment and action to stop the ongoing genocide in Darfur in an effort to bring about needed change for all of Sudan. During the election campaign, you insisted that the “Darfur problem is a stain on our souls and we need to stop it.” We are still counting on you and your leadership to act on this statement. A year has passed since this initial statement, but little has changed in Darfur. Despite news reports that consider the situation in Darfur improving, Sudanese airplane attacks, Janjaweed raids on Darfuri civilians, and fighting between rebel and government forces has continued leading up to the Doha, Qatar talks scheduled for later this month, the April 2010 elections, and the 2011 South Sudan referendum decision.

Mr. President, Our gravest concerns are the followings:

1.  Your administration is currently supporting superficial Doha peace negotiations that lack Darfuri representation. NCP representatives that support the current regime are replacing Darfuri victims’ representation at the negotiations. The major faction groups within Darfur, as well as NGOs from the region, also lack representation. The Doha Forum is thus fully dominated by NCP, the Arab League, and the African Union, not to mention that Qatar itself is partial to the regime. Darfuri’s simple demand, “give justice a chance first,” will continue to be left unanswered in Qatar. No concrete or lasting peace can be achieved in such conditions, reinforced by the fact that indicted war criminals Ahmad Horoun and Salih Kusheeb remain at large. Peace cannot be formulated without this important restoration of justice.

2.  The undemocratic election process in Sudan is allowing indicted Al-Bashir and his NCP party to run for presidency in April 2010. In the months leading up to the election, the NCP government has forced protesting Darfuris to register for the election (people of Darfur stated clearly that they will never accept or register for unfair elections that do not respect their right to restore justice, peace, and democracy) and have further arrested, beaten, and killed individuals that have voiced public opposition or have demonstrated for free and fair elections. Without taking action regarding this gross violation of human rights and failing to enforce the ICC indictments, the U.S. is sending a strong political and moral message to both Sudan and the rest of the world that a government indicted for crimes against humanity is a legitimate, justified administration of a modern day country. Al-Bashir must be rightfully arrested and charged for his crimes against humanity and prevented from using intimidation tactics and fraudulent methods to win the April 2010 elections.

3.  Since 2007, the implementation of special resolution UNSC 1769 that would send a powerful and robust force of western peacekeepers to Darfur has not been fulfilled. We ask that the full mandate of this resolution be implemented.

4.  On January 21, Al-Bashir government has revoked the licenses of 26 humanitarian organizations working in Darfur, accusing them of “breaking the law” without any further specification. Furthermore, the government sent warnings to other 13 charitable organizations, that they must comply with the country’s laws through 30 days or face the same consequences. This action follows his previous expulsion of 13 NGOs in March 2009 following the announcement of his indictment. Little (if any) help is left for Darfuris as Al-Bashir continues expelling NGOs and harassing peacekeepers and poisoning Darfuri water resources. We thus urge you to implement the following: form an international committee co-directed by the US & the UN to stop expulsion of NGOs from the region (and return those that have been expelled), and free all Darfuri and Sudanese detainees and grant them free and fair trials.

5.  We need to see a clear and well-defined US policy towards Sudan and its current government. Since The Secretary of States, Ms. Hillary Clinton, Ambassador Susan Rice and General Scott Gration announced your administration’s policy towards Sudan last year, we have never witnessed a palpable implementation or effective execution of these policies towards Darfur.

6.  The Janjaweed and their families that have resettled on land that belongs to the people of Darfur must be removed immediately. After this initial evacuation, subsequent protection and compensation should be granted to Darfuris planning on returning to this land where their villages once existed.

7.  Mr. President, The best solution for Sudan is to be united as one country, with respect to the CPA agreement that gives South Sudan rights for self-determination and a vote to secede under the 2011 referendum. It is imperative to realize that the South’s desire to secede arises from a foundation of complaints similar to the people of Darfur: unfair (and lack of) adequate representation in the Sudanese government, infringements on basic human rights at the will of the regime, and continual violence and destruction of their homeland. We can thus use the situation in South Sudan as a form of political leverage to restore justice, peace, and democracy for all of Sudan and thus create a harmonious, unified state.

Finally, Mr. President, we want to reiterate that we fully understand the difficult challenges facing all of our nations at this critical time in history. However, this is not an excuse to distract us from restoring justice for the people in Darfur. We want to remind you of the commitment you made when the whole world was watching: “Darfur will be my priority when I take office”. Mr. President Obama, we urge you to live up to your promises.

You are not only the leader of America, but you are the leader of the world as the face of America. Please do not let us, the citizens of America, the people of Sudan, and the citizens of the world, down.

Thank you.

The U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM) Committee on Conscience provides the following biography for Mohamed Yahya:

“Mohammed Adam Yahya is a refugee from the Darfur region of Sudan and is the founder and Executive Director of Damanga Coalition for Freedom and Democracy. From 1995 to 2005, he was Chairman and spokesman of the Representatives of the Massaleit Community in Exile, which was the first human rights group to alert the international community to human rights abuses in western Sudan. Mr. Yahya was born in a small village east of Al-Geneina, the capital of Darmassaleit (West Darfur state). Both as a child and adult, he experienced the brutal racism that permeates Sudanese society. In 1993, his village witnessed the first attacks of the Sudanese government’s Arab militia raiders, known as janjaweed. Yahya’s home was completely decimated and most of his relatives and neighbors were shot, raped, or burned alive in their huts. Yahya was studying at Al-Azhar University in Cairo at the time his village was destroyed. He received word that his parents were safe, but he lost 21 other family members. Yahya and other Sudanese students living in Cairo sought to alert the international community to the humanitarian crisis that had begun to unfold. In 1995, they formed the Representatives of the Massaleit Community in Exile (RMCE). The RMCE’s founding members came from many different ethnic Sudanese backgrounds including the Massaleit, Fur, Dajo, Zagawa, Bargo, Gimir, Tama, Berty, Barno, and Meme, in addition to people from the Nuba Mountains, southern Sudan and elsewhere. The RMCE began this work by writing reports and circulating them on foot to all the international embassies in Cairo. Their first major open letter to the international community, “The Hidden Slaughter and Ethnic Cleansing in Western Sudan,” was distributed in 1999. Over the next couple of years it was widely referenced by the United Nations General Assembly and Secretary-General Kofi Annan, along with organizations such as Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International. Between 1999 and 2003, working in Cairo with the office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Yahya and the RMCE were also able to sponsor more than 20,000 refugees from various parts of Sudan. They helped ensure that nearly 95% of the people fleeing Sudan received political asylum and resettlement in Europe, Canada, Australia and the United States. In 2002, fearing reprisal from the Sudanese government for his humanitarian and advocacy work, Yahya sought political asylum in the United States. After his relocation to Charlottesville, Virginia, Yahya founded Damanga Coalition for Freedom and Democracy, in order to continue and expand on the work of the RMCE.”

R.E.A.L DC Public Awareness Event February 19 on Racial Supremacist Hate

Responsible for Equality And Liberty (R.E.A.L.) will be holding a public awareness event on February 19 at 12 Noon on the challenge of racial supremacist hate, and the upcoming “white nationalist hate group” American Renaissance conference.

Our goal will be to provide a street forum in Washington DC where the public can be made aware of the ideologies to be presented at the American Renaissance conference, still planned for somewhere in the Washington DC area on February 20 and 21.  We will invite participation from the public in this public forum.

We will urge the public to protest the planned American Renaissance conference scheduled for the DC area, and urge the public to choose love, not hate.

After having the American Renaissance conference canceled at the Dulles Marriott and then again at the Washington Dulles Westin hotels, the Nazi “white nationalist” website Stormfront is reporting that American Renaissance leader Jared Taylor will reveal the secret location that the event is being moved to “48 hours before the conference.”

“Nazi” leader Don Black has been promoting the American Renaissance conference on his Stormfront web site.  His Stormfront members have been eulogizing white supremacist Nazi terrorist James Von Brunn who attacked the DC area U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in June 2009, calling for people to “hate with violent passion,” and praising Von Brunn as a “martyr.”  R.E.A.L. objects to hate, and we urge our fellow human beings to choose love, not hate.

We support our unqualified, universal human rights for all.  We urge white supremacist and “white nationalist” supporters to drop the burden of the hate of supremacism from their hearts, and to rejoin the family of humanity in support of our universal human rights.

Choose Love, Not Hate.

Nazi Stormfront Group Promotes Washington DC Area “White Nationalist” Conference

The “Nazi” and “white nationalist” Stormfront hate organization is actively promoting the February “American Renaissance” conference, still scheduled for the Washington DC area for the weekend of February 20 and 21. The Stormfront leader Don Black has attended previous American Renaissance national biannual conferences in the Washington DC area in 2006 and in 2008.

Don Black, Leader of Nazi Stormfront Organization (Photo: ADL)
Don Black, Leader of Nazi Stormfront Organization (Photo: ADL)

The UK Mirror reported that BNP leader Nick Griffin met with “former KKK chief and American Nazi Party thug Stephen ‘Don’ Black at racist conferences in the US,” including the 2006 American Renaissance conference.  Nick Griffin, who has called the Holocaust the “Holohoax,” is a featured speaker at the 2010 American Renaissance conference in the Washington DC area.

The Stormfront organization has recently posted messages from its members eulogizing the death of white supremacist Nazi terrorist James Von Brunn who attacked the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington DC in June 2009.  Stormfront members have called for others to “hate with violent passion,” have described terrorist Von Brunn as a “martyr,”  and have praised the way Von Brunn “gave his life” in his terrorist attack on the Washington DC museum.

Stormfront is on the list of the Southern Poverty Law Center’s (SPLC) hate organizations.

The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) describes Don Black and Stormfront as follows:

“Stephen Donald ‘Don’ Black is one of the most influential white supremacists in the United States, due to his role as the founder and operator of Stormfront, the most popular on-line meeting place for white supremacists around the world, and for his appearances and speeches at racist and anti-Semitic gatherings. A former Grand Dragon in the Ku Klux Klan, Black now devotes most of his time to running Stormfront out of his home in West Palm Beach, Florida.”

“Black espouses a racist and anti-Semitic ideology. His idea of ‘White Pride World Wide,’ a slogan that appears on the Stormfront Web site, involves demeaning and demonizing Jews and non-whites, while his concept of “victory” for whites includes the creation of ethnically cleansed living spaces. Black claims that blacks and non-white immigrants are increasing in numbers and committing crimes, thereby depriving whites of their majority and power in society. In addition to demonizing blacks and immigrants, Black targets Jews as the cause of societal ills.”

The Stormfront organization’s leadership is now actively promoting the “white nationalist hate group” American Renaissance conference planned for a location in the Washington DC area on the Stormfront web site, seeking to get additional members to come to the event.

Neo-Nazi Group Promotes Washington DC Area "American Renaissance" Conference - Scheduled for February 20-21
Neo-Nazi Group Promotes Washington DC Area "American Renaissance" Conference - Scheduled for February 20-21

One problem for the Stormfront members is that they don’t know where the American Renaissance conference in February is going to be held.

As a result of Responsible for Equality And Liberty (R.E.A.L.) alerting local area hotels to the background of hate associated with the American Renaissance, both the Dulles Marriott and the Washington Dulles Westin have canceled efforts by the American Renaissance “white nationalist hate group” to hold their event at these locations.

The Stormfront organization is reporting that the American Renaissance is planning to hold their event in a secret location that will be revealed 48 hours prior to the event.  Instead of recognizing that those committed to our universal human rights and dignity reject hate ideologies, Stormfront members have blamed R.E.A.L. for the cancellations.  They have made their threats on their website with smiley faces with machine guns.  (We find such juvenile behavior to be pathetic.)

Chinese Group Protests for Freedom in DC Outside Hong Kong Offices

On a bitterly cold day, Chinese Americans and their supporters protested in Washington DC today outside the Hong Kong Economic and Cultural Representative Office (HKECRO).  They called on the Hong Kong immigration authorities to permit the Shen Yun Performing Arts to perform their Chinese cultural music and dance show in Hong Kong.  On Wednesday, January 27 at press conferences at the National Press Club and on Capitol Hill, supporters of the Shen Yun Performing Arts described how the group’s key production staff were denied visas to support the show for sold-out audiences in Hong Kong.

The supporters of the Shen Yun Performing Arts group told of the importance of allowing artistic freedom to permit the show in Hong Kong, which includes traditional Chinese cultural music and dance, as well as stories about modern-day persecution in Communist China of the Falun Dafa and others that seek human freedom.   Falun Dafa supporters stated that the Shen Yun show would provide a message of hope to the Chinese people in Hong Kong through the values of truth, compassion, and tolerance.

Dr.Sen Nieh and other leaders spoke in support of the need for the Hong Kong immigration authorities to grant the visas necessary to allow the Shen Yun Performing Arts show to be seen by the Chinese people in Hong Kong.    Falun Dafa leader Dr. Shan-Tao Lai presented a letter to the Washington DC Hong Kong Economic and Cultural Representative Office with the Falun Dafa request to allow such necessary visas to be granted.  Dr. Lai was accompanied by Responsible for Equality And Liberty (R.E.A.L.)‘s Jeffrey Imm from the protest group. The Falun Dafa letter was accepted by the Hong Kong office.

A key message of the Washington DC protesters was to show that they stood as one in solidarity with their brothers and sisters in Hong Kong.

On Sunday, January 31, 2010, supporters of the Shen Yun Performing Arts will hold a “grand march and rally” to protest the Hong Kong immigration department’s denial of the visa to seven key members of Shen Yun that has caused the forced cancellation of seven sold out shows.  Falun Dafa and Shen Yun supporters anticipate global protests around the world to demonstrate their desire to see the Shen Yun Performing Arts have the opportunity to perform in Hong Kong.

Responsible for Equality And Liberty (R.E.A.L.)‘s Jeffrey Imm also spoke at the protest in support of the Shen Yun Performing Arts, stating that such artistic freedom of expression was a vital way of defending our universal human rights.  He called for the Hong Kong authorities to change their decision on banning Shen Yun show staff from traveling to Hong Kong so that they can provide their Chinese cultural show to the Chinese people. He also urged Americans to contact their government officials to address the Hong Kong government on this.  He stated that the values of truth, tolerance, and compassion shown in the Shen Yun performance was a key part of values essential to our universal human rights, and shared respect for one another.  He stated that R.E.A.L.’s motto for the world is “Love Wins.”

Virginia: Westin Stands Up for Human Rights and Diversity – White Nationalist Conference Canceled There

Responsible for Equality And Liberty (R.E.A.L.) has been advised by the Westin Washington Dulles Hotel tonight that the conference scheduled by “white nationalist” group New Century Foundation / American Renaissance has been canceled at their hotel.  We believe in and support freedom of assembly.   Our goal in educating the public on the ideology of the American Renaissance (AR) has always been so that the American people can honestly and objectively assess for themselves what the AR conference is seeking to accomplish.

R.E.A.L. applauds the Westin Washington Dulles Hotel and Starwood Hotels on their commitment to diversity, and their principled stand on respecting the human dignity and human rights of all of their customers.  We urge you to contact the Westin Washington Dulles Hotel and let them know how much you appreciate their stand.  While our request was to have an area to provide a counter-message of racial diversity and harmony at the Westin, we understand their decision on the American Renaissance conference and their public relations with their customers.

Westin Washington Dulles Hotel Stands Tall Against Hate

The “white nationalist” group New Century Foundation / American Renaissance is on the list of “hate groups” by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), and is described as “white supremacist” by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL).  It has been tracked by law enforcement agencies.

R.E.A.L. reported in November 2009 that the Dulles Marriott canceled American Renaissance’s planned conference, after we told them what the American Renaissance organization was.   Now once again in January 2010, we have had discussions with the Dulles Westin on American Renaissance, and once again another reputable hotel has canceled the American Renaissance “white nationalist” conference from being held at their hotel.

In both cases, American Renaissance’s Jared Taylor has used the 501(c)3 parent company “New Century Foundation” in communication with these hotels.  It is not as well-known that New Century Foundation hosts both the American Renaissance “white nationalist” web site and conferences, where white supremacists, Neo-Nazi Stormfront, former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke, and British Holocaust Denier Nick Griffin have attended.  American Renaissance has planned to have Nick Griffin as their speaker at the 2010 American Renaissance conference; Nick Griffin has called the Holocaust the “Holohoax.”

Both David Duke and Nick Griffin appeared at a previous white supremacist conference that was attended by white supremacist terrorist James Von Brunn who killed black security guard Stephen Tyrone Johns at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington DC in June 2009.  Stormfront organization members have recently been eulogizing Von Brunn’s recent death, and defending Von Brunn’s terrorist actions in Washington DC.

We expect “white nationalist” group New Century Foundation / American Renaissance to attempt to reschedule their Northern Virginia event at other Dulles airport area hotels.   We urge such other hotels to follow the example of the Dulles Marriott and the Dulles Westin in considering the ethical costs that would be associated with white supremacist conferences.  Hate hurts us all.

Moreover, American Renaissance’s leader Jared Taylor has openly stated that the upcoming conference will mock diversity “It is the idea of 300 of us all in the same room, laughing openly at the idea that  diversity is a strength, that is more than the hypocrites who run the country can stand.”  We urge other area hotel leaders who might be reading this – don’t let your hotel be used to host hate and to mock our very principles of human equality.  Tell “white nationalist” group New Century Foundation / American Renaissance that there is no room for hate in the Washington DC metropolitan area and suburbs.

We support our unqualified, universal human rights for all.  We urge white supremacist and “white nationalist” supporters to drop the burden of the hate of supremacism from their hearts, and to rejoin the family of humanity in support of our universal human rights.

Choose Love, Not Hate.

===================================

The American Renaissance / New Century Foundation website provides a cacophony of White Supremacist hate commentaries mocking Black Americans based on their IQ, arguing that the genetics of Black Americans make them intellectually inferior, and railing against “the color of crime” with comments attacking Blacks and Hispanic individuals.  It warns its readers about “Transition to Black Rule” and attacks Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It’s focus is exclusively on a white supremacist perspective on race with books and articles entitled: “Why Race Matters,”  “Racial Heresies of the 21st Century,” and “Race and the American Prospect.”

Both the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) and the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) have background on the racist and white supremacist views of American Renaissance leader Jared Taylor.  The SPLC describes both the American Renaissance and the New Century Foundation groups as “white nationalist” “hate groups.” Jared Taylor promotes racial segregation, and as ADL states, “promotes pseudoscientific studies that attempt to demonstrate the intellectual and cultural superiority of whites and publishes articles on the supposed decline of American society because of integrationist social policies.”

Jared Taylor’s New Century Foundation describes itself as “a 501(c)(3) organization founded in 1994 to study immigration and race relations so as to better understand the consequences of America’s increasing diversity. It sponsors publications and books, and holds occasional conferences.”

The Southern Poverty Law Center reports on the “New Century Foundation”  and “American Renaissance” as follows:
— “Jared Taylor, the man who heads the New Century Foundation and edits its allied magazine American Renaissance, is a white supremacist who celebrates the “clear conception of the United States as a nation ruled by and for whites.” The foundation and magazine, based in Oakton, Va., tirelessly advance pseudo-scientific theories linking IQ to race and advocate eugenics — selective breeding to ‘improve’ human genetic stock.”
— “The foundation also puts on bi-annual conferences; the 2002 event was advertised like this: ‘In all parts of the world, whites are afraid to speak out in their own interests. The costs of ‘diversity,’ racial differences in IQ, the threat of non-white immigration — politicians and the media are afraid to discuss what these things mean for whites and their civilization.’ ”
— “Taylor also has noted approvingly that until 1967, ‘strong opposition to mixed marriage was enshrined in law’ in 16 states. In ‘The Myth of Diversity,’ Taylor writes that ‘diversity’ has led to civil rights claims by all kinds of groups he doesn’t like. “Anyone who opposes the glorification of the alien, the subnormal, and the inferior can be denounced,’ he complains. ‘The metastasis of diversity is a fascinating story, but the disease began with race.’ ”
— “After 300 pages of attacking blacks and dismissing white racism, Taylor’s 1992 book Paved With Good Intentions: The Failure of Race Relations in Contemporary America notes that most Americans would not agree to use sterilization or forced abortion on those whom the society considers less fit. His solution? Make ‘welfare mothers’ accept a ‘five-year implantable contraceptive.’ ”
— “Taylor is allied with Wayne Lutton, whom he thanks in his book and who is the editor of The Social Contract, a journal published by John Tanton’s The Social Contract Press*. Taylor, Lutton and Richard Lynn are on the editorial board of The Occidental Quarterly, a journal where Sam Francis, top editor for the racist Council of Conservative Citizens*, serves as book review editor. The Occidental Quarterly’s first issue featured a story by the late Keith Stimely, who was also an editor of the Journal of Historical Review, a notorious Holocaust denial publication.”

White nationalist Jared Taylor, who is also promoted by VDARE, was a key speaker at the 2009 Council of Conservative Citizens (CofCC) national convention. (R.E.A.L. held a protest at a VDARE event in Baltimore, Maryland in October 2009, and at a VDARE event in McLean, Virginia in June 2009.) Jared Taylor has also blamed the 9/11 attacks on America as well, spreading hate after the 9/11 attacks stating “If we go to war, it will not be because we are the land of freedom and opportunity, but because we are the best friend and benefactor of Israel… If we fight Israel’s enemies, the United States will become like Israel: a garrison state and battleground.”

In addition to “white nationalist” Jared Taylor, other speakers scheduled to appear at the February 19-21 American Renaissance/New Century Foundation conference in Virginia include:

Nick Griffin, leader of the racist British National Party, who has appeared at America white supremacist events, and has a history of Holocaust denial, calling the Holocaust the “Holohoax.” Griffin has been photographed with former KKK leader David Duke; the white supremacist event that Griffin was also attended by U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum terrorist Von Brunn (praised by VDARE as “an intelligent man”).  Nick Griffin also has praised the racial segregationist views of the Nation of Islam’s Louis Farrakhan.

— Wayne Lutton – who ADL states that “Lutton is a director on the board of the Charles Martel Society, which publishes the racist Occidental Quarterly (OQ) journal and the anti-Semitic Occidental Observer online magazine

— Sam G. Dickson – who is reportedly on the editorial board of the Council of Conservative Citizens (CofCC), who describes himself as a supporter of “American racial nationalism”

Nigeria: Religious Hate Explodes, Shaming Both Christians and Muslims

A week ago, religious hatred and riots in Nigeria resulted in devastating loss of life, destruction of houses of worship and homes. With the catastrophic aftermath of the Haitian earthquakes, the Nigerian riots were largely lost in the world news coverage, but the Nigerian riots remain a challenge to our human rights, and a challenge to our willingness to recognize and confront hate.

While details continue to trickle in about the the Nigeria riots in Jos, one thing is clear – there has not been sufficient condemnation of the Nigerian riots and violence by leaders of Christian and Islamic faiths. Too often there is only a series of finger-pointing exercises where one side blames the other for having “started” the riots. COMPASS has provided fair reporting to document both allegations: one report states that the riots began with a Muslim man harassing a woman going to church, another report claims that the riots started over Christian youths “stopping a Muslim from rebuilding his house.”

But the obvious point to any people of faith who respect each other and respect our universal human rights is that it really does not matter who “started” the latest conflict. The reports of burned houses of worship, rioters murdering with machetes, gunfire in the street, dead bodies thrown in wells, axes used on little children, warrant shame and international condemnation from both sides and a unequivocal renunciation of religious hate. The Jos riots are a horror story of human beings’ inhumanity to one another, driven by nothing less than blind, unreasoning hatred.

So a week later, it is disturbing to see the significant silence of many international religious leaders, outside of local Nigerian religious leaders, in condemning such violence.  While we have positive statements from Archbishop Kaigama calling for residents to “sheath their swords and be their brothers’ keepers” and Sheik Balarabe Dawud appealing for calm, there is a larger international silence that ignores that this latest Jos violence, even worse than the 2008 Jos riots, even happened.

There is silence from the Vatican (we even contacted the Catholic News Service to see if we had missed something).   There is silence from the likes of Rick Warren, a long time defender of former Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) leader Archbishop Peter Akinola, who told reporters in 2006 that while “No Christian would pray for violence, but it would be utterly naive to sweep this issue of Islam under the carpet… [and that] I’ve said before: let no Muslim think they have the monopoly on violence.”

But the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) had a statement. Even the Muslim Brotherhood had a statement. This is the same OIC that seeks to promote Sharia law as an alternative “Cairo Declaration” code – defying universal human rights to the nations of the world, and the Muslim Brotherhood whose motto is “Violent Extemism is our way.” But they managed to speak out against the Jos violence, while there was a deafening silence from the international Christian community condemning such hate and violence – on both sides.

Media reports have described the Jos riots as having predominantly Muslim victims. On January 19, NEXT reported that Balarabe Dawud, the head of the central mosque in Jos, had received 192 bodies. On January 23, Human Rights Watch told AFP that Muslims were then quoting 364 Muslims dead in the riots. Also on January 23, The Daily Nation was reporting on bodies being dumped in wells, with reports of people being burned alive, and children being attacked, with one witness stating “He said he had seen the bodies of 20-30 children, some burned, some sliced with machetes, and that his wife was in hospital with an 11-month-old girl who had been cut with an axe.”

The Daily Nation also reported that “US-based Human Rights Watch said groups of armed men attacked the mostly Muslim population of Kuru Karama on January 19, burning some alive and killing others as they tried to flee. It urged [Nigerian Vice President] Jonathan to order an investigation of ‘credible reports of a massacre of at least 150 Muslim residents’. They were armed with cutlasses, guns, sticks and bags of stone. It was not the Christians from our community but those from outside who came,’ one 32-year-old resident of Kuru Karama, who was not named, told Human Rights Watch. ‘The children were running helter-skelter. The men were trying to protect the women. People who ran into the bush were killed. Some were burned in the mosque and some went to the houses and were burned,’ he said.”

As of January 25, Punch was reporting that the total death count was estimated at 492 dead, after another 28 bodies were found, with “dozens of cars, houses, churches and mosques were also burnt during four days of unrest.”  On January 18, Christian Solidarity Worldwide reported that 40 Christians had been killed in the riots.  On January 21, Reuters reported that “correspondent saw three burnt bodies lying on the streets in Jos and several buildings, churches and cars destroyed by fire.”

After reports that the most recent riots were spurred by an attack on worshippers at a church, security was heightened around Christian churches in the Jos area, where many attended services on Sunday, January 24, while others still sought to flee the area.  Growing fear of additional attacks were reported by both area Christians and Muslims sending text messages to members of their groups on anticipated future attacks. In addition, the violence in Nigeria seemed to be spreading with reports of a Christian Anglican bishop kidnapped on January 24.

Certainly some of the reporting may be inaccurate as Nigerian Archbishop Kaigama suggests.  Moreover, Christianity Today’s Craig Keener stated that readers should be wary that “international media outlets have often depended largely on the Muslim-dominated Hausa media of northern Nigeria.”  Craig Keener also cautioned about “one recent case, when according to some reports many Muslim young men were gunned down charging peace-keeping soldiers, their bodies were displayed to the media in the mosque as if ‘Christians’ had slaughtered them there.”

But the accuracy of how many Christians or Muslims were killed by either Christians or Muslims, and where they were killed, really is not the point.  The failure of too many to recognize this is indeed the real problem.  People promoting a religious view of fellowship should always be willing to recognize and unequivocally condemn anyone who uses a religious rationale for hate and violence.

You cannot promote religious love, if you won’t recognize and reject religious hate – especially when it comes from members of your religion.  Our shared rights to exchange ideas and expect dignity for our religious beliefs comes with the shared responsibility to never allow our religious beliefs to be used to rationalize hate.  Surely the thousands that have died in Nigeria over religious hate deserve more than a determined denial over why they died.

But the idea that this latest violence in Jos was based on religious hate seems to be scrupulously ignored.  While Nigerian Christian Archbishop Kaigama has stated that Nigeria is “messing up,” he states that the continuing violence in Jos is more political than religious, with Catholic News Service (CNS) reporting that “[m]edia reports describing the violence as a religious clash between Muslims and Christians were inaccurate.” CNS reported that “Archbishop Ignatius Kaigama of Jos said the origin of the current conflicts, like those of 2008, was a struggle for political control of the city between the Hausa people, who are predominantly Muslim, and the indigenous residents, who are mostly Christians.”  The Financial Times has the same story line, arguing that the source of the violence is merely “politics and poverty.”

Where have we heard this before?  Just about every place that is in denial on religious violence: Afghanistan, Iraq, Egypt, Pakistan, you name it – the same argument of “politics and poverty” is trotted out to ignore that it is not merely politics that makes people pick up machetes against their neighbors, it is not merely poverty that makes people burn down houses of worship, and it is not merely misunderstandings that lead people to pick up axes against little children.  There are plenty of political disagreements that don’t lead to such carnage.  There are plenty of impoverished people in the world that don’t find the answer to their poverty in murder and atrocities.

No the source of such violence is not just “politics and poverty,” it is hate.   Moreover, the world will perceive this as religious hate.  While much of the western media has either ignored or marginally reported this story, how do we expect it is being covered on the pro-jihadist web sites of the world?

The widespread silence by responsible, international Christian leaders and Muslim leaders (outside of the anti-freedom OIC and Muslim Brotherhood groups) to recognize and condemn such religious hatred by both those Christian and Muslim rioters in Jos will certainly ensure that the Jos riots will be used by those who perceive a global Christian “war on Islam,” which remains a motivator for violent jihadists around the world.

For those of both faiths that seek to reject religious extremism and hate, the Jos riots represents an opportunity to be responsible for each other, responsible for defending love and peace, and responsible for our shared universal human rights and dignity.

Responsible for Equality And Liberty urges such religious leaders not to pass up the opportunity to make their position clear on the religious hatred seen in the Jos riots, and urge others to Choose Love, Not Hate.
