Pakistan: Extremist lawmakers Object to Domestic Violence Law for Women’s Rights

R.E.A.L. summarizes reports on a new proposed domestic violence bill in Pakistan, opposition to it, and reports on domestic violence in Pakistan.  In August 2009, a similar bill was reportedly “passed” by the Pakistan National Assembly, but was rejected due to inaction by the Pakistan Senate and the rest of the Pakistan government by December 2009.  In January 2010, the U.S. government announced plans for $7.5 billion in aid for Pakistan.

April 8, 2010: AP reports: “Pakistan edges closer to banning domestic violence”
— after acid attack on her face, destroying her left eye, wife Zakia Perveen said “I just thought it was my destiny, my fate.”
— “Rights advocates hope a proposed law banning domestic violence will chip away at such attitudes, giving women a more even playing field and bringing Pakistan in line with a growing number of developing nations that have outlawed spousal abuse.”
— “But Islamist lawmakers in Parliament are objecting, claiming the law could tear apart the social fabric by undermining families.”
— “In 2008, there were at least 7,571 incidents of acid attacks, rapes, spousal beatings and other violence against women, according to The Aurat Foundation, a women’s rights group. Because the group relied mostly on media reports, the figure is likely a vast undercount.”
— “Other surveys have shown up to 80 percent of wives in rural parts of Pakistan fear physical violence from their husbands, while 50 percent of women in urban areas admit their husbands beat them, according to a 2009 U.S. State Department report on Pakistan.”

The February 1, 2010: Aurat Foundation – Statistics of violence against women in Pakistan in 2009. report states that:

“The number of cases of violence in different categories of offenses and their province-wise breakdown is as follows. There were:
— 1384 cases of murder:
(752 in Punjab; 288 in Sindh; 266 in NWFP; 39 in Balochistan; 39 in Islamabad);
— 604 cases of ‘honor’ killing:
(245 in Punjab; 284in Sindh; 14 in NWFP; 59 in Balochistan; 2 in Islamabad);
—  1987 cases of abduction/kidnapping:
(1698 in Punjab; 160 in Sindh; 64 in NWFP; 13 in Balochistan; 52 in Islamabad);
—  608 cases of domestic violence:
(271 in Punjab; 134 in Sindh; 163 in NWFP; 22 in Balochistan; 18 in Islamabad);
—  683 cases of suicide:
( 448 in Punjab; 176 in Sindh; 43 in NWFP; 10 in Balochistan; 6 in Islamabad);
—  928 cases of rape/gang-rape:
(786 in Punjab; 122 in Sindh; 7 in NWFP; 4 in Balochistan; 9 in Islamabad);
—  274 cases of sexual assault:
(227 in Punjab; 44 in Sindh; 0 in NWFP; 2 in Balochistan; 1 in Islamabad);
—  50 cases of stove burning:
(33 in Punjab; 10 in Sindh; 4 in NWFP; 1 in Balochistan; 2 in Islamabad);
—  53 cases of acid throwing:
(42 in Punjab; 9 in Sindh; 1 in NWFP; 0 in Balochistan; 1 in Islamabad);
—  1977 cases of violence were of miscellaneous nature (vanni/swara, custodial violence, torture, trafficking, child marriages, incest, threat to violence, sexual harassment, attempted murder, suicide & rape) in the four provinces and Islamabad.”

A year ago, similar media reports stated efforts were in progress on a new domestic violence law in Pakistan.  In August 2009, Dawn reported that a “private bill” on domestic violence had passed in the Pakistan National Assembly, which required approval by the Pakistan Senate.  The Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) in Pakistan has previously warned that a law against domestic violence will “push up divorce rates,” according to Dawn.  But by December 25, 2009, ANI reported “the [Pakistan] Government has seemingly lost sight of it.” On December 25, 2009, ANI reported: “when the bill was sent to the Senate, Mohammad Khan Sheerani, of the JUI-F, raised some objections, leading to a deferment of hearing, and then the Government slept on the matter and now the bill has lapsed… to make it a law the Government was required to get the bill passed through the upper house within 90 days of its receipt.”

In another report by Shirin Sadeghi, Pakistan group Women Protection Project’s Dr. Khola Iram states “When you talk about domestic violence in Pakistan, some men in the educated classes, for instance, say that women are not the ones who are dying, it’s the police officers, they are all males… They don’t consider citizen security as security of women also.”
Shirin Sadeghi reports “Dr. Iram is subdued as she explains that Pakistan, a nation of over 90 million women and girls, does not have a domestic violence law.”
Shirin Sadeghi also tells of how Pakistani women have been “married” to inanimate objects and even pigeons to save their inheritance.  Shirin Sadeghi reports: “The concept of marrying a female family member to an inanimate object, such as the Koran, or an animal, is too often employed to ensure that the inheritance will never be lost. ‘We had a case in Bhawalpur where the lady was married to a pigeon just to save the inheritance. I mean, what kind of Islam is that?’ Dr. Iram says.”

March 2009 report – Pakistan woman Irshaad asks: “Is it really a punishable crime to beat or scold one’s wife?” She says she is not beaten as often now that her husband has gotten sick.

April 4 – We Remember… Dr. King’s Sacrifice

On April 4, 1968 – Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was murdered – he was the ultimate individual “responsible for equality and liberty,” who gave his life for his nation, and for freedom itself.

On this day, April 4 – we ask all Americans, and all freedom loving people around the world – to take a moment – and say a prayer of thanks for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and imagine where our world would be today, without his love for all of us, and his courage to be responsible for equality and liberty.

Set My People Free to Worship Me Group Seeks Religious Freedom

Press release from group “Set My People Free to Worship Me”

SET MY PEOPLE FREE TO WORSHIP ME

Presents human rights request to the Arab League

Cairo, Egypt, Saturday, April 3, 2010 – Set My People Free to Worship Me, a new network of individuals, churches and organizations working for the freedom of religious converts to live and practice their faith, to experience equality and justice in their home countries presented a letter addressed to Dr. Amer Musa the General Secretary of the Arab League office on Saturday (Easter Eve) April 3, 2010 at 12 noon in Cairo.

Founder and Leader, Kamal Fahmi said, “Set My People Free to Worship Me would like to request that the Arab League consider giving absolute freedom for all Muslims in the Arab World to choose their belief or religion, to stop all forms of discrimination against all minorities and to protect the freedom of individuals and groups to worship and proclaim their beliefs.”

“We appeal to the Arab League to consider the requests outlined in the petition letter. We are dismayed that religious liberty is curtailed in most countries in the Arab World and would like to appeal for justice, equality and mercy,” said Kamal Fahmi.

“Our plan to hold simultaneous marches in a number of cities has been postponed due to unforeseen circumstances. We hope to have a simple protest in England and Australia on May 22, 2010.  We apologise for any inconvenience caused,” said Kamal Fahmi regretfully. “We want to invite individuals, churches, religious bodies and NGOs to participate in these justice and peace protest in England and Australia.”

Kamal draws inspiration from the involvement of Martin Luther King Jr. in the civil rights movement. He believes strongly in religious liberty with the onslaught of religious persecution worldwide, “We call on the Arab League to respond to setting things right as Edmund Burke says, ‘For evil men to triumph, it is only necessary for good men to do nothing.’ ”

Kamal Fahmi brings a strong background in non-governmental organization development. Fahmi has spent over 20 years working in the Middle East and Africa in Christian based organizations. He has also been involved in advocating on human rights issues throughout the years.

Indiana: “Christian Identity” Supporting Church Hosts White Nationalist Speaker, Plans Film Showing

Responsible for Equality And Liberty (R.E.A.L.) has learned that a “Christian Identity” supporting “church,” the Abundant Life Fellowship, in Morgantown, Indiana has hosted one white nationalist speaker, and plans to show a film by Craig Bodeker (who was scheduled to be a speaker at the white nationalist “American Renaissance” conference.)  The Abundant Life Fellowship hosted an event in Martinsville, Indiana  on March 27, and now plans to show Craig Bodeker’s  film denying the existence of racism, “A Conversation About Race,” on the evening of April 2 (7 to 9 PM), on Good Friday, at the Abundant Life Fellowship facility at 140 E. Washington Street in Morgantown, Indiana.  (See also our “correction” on this.)

Craig Bodeker is a supporter of the white nationalist “American Renaissance” organization’s conferences, and was scheduled to speak at their biannual conference in the Washington DC area in February 2010, before DC area hotels became aware of the racist nature of group’s ideology and chose to cancel their event. The American Renaissance is listed by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) as a “white nationalist hate group.” American Renaissance’s Craig Bodeker wrote to R.E.A.L.’s Jeffrey Imm, warning him to stop educating the public about the American Renaissance’s ideological nature or someone might “decide to correct your behavior” among other comments.  At the DC conference, Craig Bodeker was to speak with “white nationalists” and racist individuals including Nick Griffin, who has called the Holocaust “the Holohoax.” Craig Bodeker has created a film called “A Conversation about Race” which seeks to deny that racism exists.

The Indiana events in Martinsville and Morgantown have been supported by Occidental Dissent contributor Matt Parrott, who is also the local Indiana leader of the Council of Conservative Citizens (CofCC), which is also listed by the SPLC as a “white nationalist hate group.” Occidental Dissent, where Matt Parrott writes his articles on “white nationalism,” describes its mission as “the creation of a Jew-free, racially exclusive White ethnostate in North America.”

On Occidental Dissent, Matt Parrott has been promoting the Martinsville and Morgantown, Indiana events hosted by the Abundant Life Fellowship church.  The Abundant Life Fellowship church pastor Jonathan Harness appears at the end of a YouTube video of the white nationalist rally in Martinsville, after Matt Parrott finishes speaking.

Regarding the “White Nationalist community,” Matt Parrott claims to be a “veteran of the movement for a decade.” He complains that “Jews are directing our foreign policy, running Hollywood, controlling our media, and dominating our academic institutions.”  (Prior to his involvement with the racial oriented, “Christian Identity”-supporting Abundant Life Fellowship Church events, Matt Parrott was a member of an atheist organization, whose home page illustrates someone defiling a crucifix.)

Indiana Events Promoted on Stormfront “Hate Group” Web Site by Church

The Indiana events have also been promoted on the “Stormfront” group’s web site, led by former Ku Klux Klan Grand Wizard and former American Nazi Party member Don Black.  Don Black defines his Stormfront group as “white nationalist” with a logo using a white cross with the slogan “white pride worldwide.”  The Stormfront group is also listed by the SPLC as a “white nationalist hate group.”

The Indiana events were promoted on the Stormfront “white nationalist hate group” website  by a local volunteer who is a member of the local Indiana CofCC “hate group,” and states that she is the wife of an Indiana CofCC member at the Martinsville, Indiana rally.  They have also been promoted there by the “associate pastor” of the Abundant Life Fellowship “church.”

This CofCC wife, with the Stormfront name “remain in the light,” is a “Friend of Stormfront Sustaining Member.”   She writes on the Stormfront web site about the Abundant Life Fellowship white nationalist speaker planned for April 2 event in Morgantown, Indiana:  “As an individual, I would like to extend the invitation to all of our white brethren regardless of religion (or lack thereof). I understand that it may be awkward for those not of the Christian faith to attend an event at a church, but please remember that the emphasis is on race and heritage. All white kinsmen welcome!”

She also writes on Stormfront that “We need to be united in our fight for the white race…. [and that] This experience will hopefully help any future theological dialogues that occure [sic] once we secure a white nation… [and that our judicial system has failed] since it has been infested by Jews.”

Abundant Life Fellowship “associate pastor” Ed Glasgow is also a forum member of the Stormfront “hate group,” and has been there for six years.  He also uses the Stormfront web site to promote the Morgantown, Indiana white nationalist events.  According to his biography on Abundant Life Fellowship church, “In 1997 Ed and Sarah attended a debate on ‘Who is Israel?’ and was there introduced to the Christian Israel truth.”  “He served as Asst. Pastor at Union Christian church in Paragon, Indiana until it was disbanded.”

Abundant Life Fellowship "Associate Pastor" Ed Glasgow (Photo: Abundant Life Fellowship)
Abundant Life Fellowship “Associate Pastor” Ed Glasgow (Photo: Abundant Life Fellowship Web Site)

Ed Glasgow goes on to make his views about Jews very clear on the Stormfront “hate group” web site, stating:  “I am the asst. pastor at Abundant Life Fellowship. Yes we are a Christian Israel church. We believe that the Anglo-Saxon, Germanic, Scandinavian, Celtic and kindred peoples make up the physical descendants of the Israelites in the Bible. We do not believe those who claim to be jews, or the modern state of IsraeLIE are, and in fact are just the impostors mentioned in Revelation 2:9 and 3:9.”   Ed Glasgow has spoken at Indiana events along with Jonathan Harness at events hosted by the “Heritage Connection” white nationalist band, who fly a banner on the blog with the Stormfront logo “white pride worldwide.”

On his Facebook page, Ed Glasgow shows his interests to be Glock pistols, the “Confederate States of America,” a company that sells products with the Confederate flag, and the Bible.  He also states that he is a fan of makers of sub-machine guns (SMGs) and other tactical weapons.

The Stormfront “hate group” has a history of members guilty of racial terrorism plots, members calling for assassinations, members who have murdered police officers, members praising terrorist acts in the United States as acts by “martyrs” or “heroes,” and Stormfront members calling for additional terrorist attacks on Americans.) On March 29, 2010, Stormfront forum member Daniel Cowart pleaded guilty to a racial terrorist plot to kill 102 Americans.

Indiana’s “Abundant Life Fellowship Church” Views on Race

Abundant Life Fellowship “church” pastor Jonathan Harness describes his church as a “Christian Israelite fellowship.”  For those wondering what a “Christian Israelite fellowship” is, elsewhere he clarifies this as “Christian Israel (or Identity).”  On the Abundant Life Fellowship web site, they have posted an article by Lawrence Blanchard criticizing a book called “Race Over Grace – The Racialist Religion of the Christian Identity Movement,” which gives a good idea of the “racialist” views held by the Abundant Life Fellowship “church.”  (Lawrence Blanchard agrees with the book where it states the Christian Identity movement has been too fragmented, and needs to be more unified, not about criticism of its racist views.)

In a recent list of prayers at the Abundant Life Fellowship “church,” pastor Jonathan Harness calls for prayers and praise for “Christian Identity ministries all over.”

Abundant Life Fellowship "Church" Calls for Support for "Christian Identity ministries all over" (Image: Abundant Life Fellowship Church Web Site)
Abundant Life Fellowship “Church” Calls for Support for “Christian Identity ministries all over” (Image: Abundant Life Fellowship Church Web Site)

The “Christian Identity” movement has been described by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) as a “racist and anti-Semitic religious sect whose adherents believe that white people of European descent are the descendants of the ‘Lost Tribes’ of ancient Israel.”  ADL also states that “Many consider Jews to be the Satanic offspring of Eve and the Serpent, while non-whites are ‘mud peoples’ created before Adam and Eve. Its virulent racist and anti-Semitic beliefs are usually accompanied by extreme anti-government sentiments. Despite its small size, Christian Identity influences virtually all white supremacist and extreme anti-government movements. It has also informed criminal behavior ranging from hate crimes to acts of terrorism.”

The SPLC also provides an essay on the past history of the Christian Identity ideology and its links to terrorist and militia groups, such as “The Order” and the “Covenant, Sword and Arm of the Lord (CSA).”  The Occidental Dissent group, where Matt Parrott writes, has used slogans from white nationalist David Lane, the founder of “The Order.”

Abundant Life Fellowship's Jonathan Harness at Martinsville, Indiana Racial Event
Abundant Life Fellowship’s Jonathan Harness at Martinsville, Indiana Racial Event

Throughout his writings, “pastor” Jonathan Harness describes his “biblical” views on race, rejecting racial integration, focusing on the leadership of Christian by “white men,” viewing that leaders must be “white,” and seeking to defend white heritage and denying the existence of racism.  (See also his various comments on “race,” “racial,” “racism,” and “white” people on his website.)

Harness defending “white heritage importance,” rejecting “the fallacy called racism,” stating “It is by the mouths of our enemy, those anti-Christ deceiving liars, who continue to keep this “supposed” sin alive in our midst to keep the white race beat down and oppressed by causing the compassion of the white race to be turned into self-loathing for a sin that none of us personally committed!”

— Not unlike Craig Bodeker, however, “pastor” Johnathan Harness also seems to believe that racism doesn’t exist, stating that:

“I have had a minister of this faith speak ill against brethren in the name of ‘racism’; a word that is filled with emotion, but is used by our common enemy to destroy us all and we continue to use it on one another.  I challenge you all to find the origin of the word, ‘racism’.  It isn’t an old word, but rather a fairly new word within the last century.  And yet, we continue to ‘judge’ others for supposed ‘racism’ when it is bringing the judgment back on ourselves as we stand as racial separatist and therefore are bunched together (whether we like it or not) by the semantic of it!”

Harness arguing that God formed man only as “white man”

Harness condemning racial integration: “My opponent began this treatise with an argument about the New Covenant being established for ‘all men’ and obviously my opponent has not studied that topic out thoroughly as their point was of a racially integrated relationship within the Kingdom of God through His Christ and that is absolutely against the premises of Scripture.”

Harness calling for tithing only to support his own race: “I teach that all of these should be of our racial kin as we have many needs in our own people”

Harness on the only hope for Christianity in the white race: “We can only find the answer in one people group and one alone; that being the Anglo-Saxon, Celtic, Germanic, Scandinavian, Kindred peoples.  Even today you do not find the fulfillment of these expectations any greater than in the white man.  The white man has been faithful in carrying the Gospel message throughout the globe.”

Harness calling for “white Christians” to condemn free elections: “Could it be that the conservative white ‘Christians’ are beginning to “wake up” to the reality of tyranny that is upon this country through the curses of Deuteronomy 28?  Could it be that we, White Americans, with true birth right are realizing the weight of this election and what it might mean to us and our progeny?”

Not surprisingly, Jonathan Harness was horrified by the election of a black American as president, stating in despair that:

“It is with a very heavy heart that I write this article this week!  We, as a nation of believers in America, have seen history in the making clearly and unobstructed.  Moreover, we are the reason that we have seen this history being unfurled before our very eyes!”

“This week our nation elected its first black President!  This is an unbelievable feat as I grew up in the 70’s and 80’s; a time that was still inundated with pride for heritage and country:  I believe that most during that time and before will agree that we still respected the forefathers beliefs on the necessity of being ‘white’ for ‘high’ leadership purposes.”

Jonathan Harness decries that “They sold the generation before mine on integration… The Bible has explicitly warned us of our errors and has offered us a way of correcting them, but we have to be willing to accept that we have the ability to accomplish things for His Kingdom.”

Abundant Life Fellowship Pastor Harness Denying Existence of Racism
Abundant Life Fellowship Pastor Harness Denying Existence of Racism

According to his biography on the Abundant Life Fellowship church web site, “Pastor Jonathan attended the Bible Institute in St. Paul, MN. He has been in ministry since he was 16 years old.”  It also states that he and his wife “worked as Youth Pastors, Youth Directors for the Church of God United Assembly, Outreach Pastors, and both served on the board of directors of the National Christian Outreach.”

The Abundant Life Fellowship church sells books by white nationalist Matt Parrott, books condemning interracial marriage, a book by Lawrence Blanchard “Did All Races Come from Adam?,” “The Story of Celto-Saxon Israel,” and “Symbols of our Celto-Saxon Heritage,” among others.

In addition to the “Abundant Life Fellowship church,” Jonathan Harness also is opening a store in Nashville, Indiana to sell Confederate flags and associated memorabilia called “Livin the Legacy.”  According to the Brown County Democrat, the local Nashville, Indiana government was concerned about a store with a Confederate flag sign, but their Confederate flag sign was approved by the local Indiana government.

Morgantown Pastor Speaks Out to Defend Christianity and Equality for All Races

In a separate discussion with the pastor of the Morgantown Baptist Church in Indiana, R.E.A.L. learned some additional facts about the Abundant Life Fellowship “church” to provide context on this group.

Pastor Ben Swopes states that the white nationalist and racist views of the Abundant Life Fellowship members do not represent Morgantown, Indiana, and that they represent only a small fraction of what is a very small town of about 2 miles.  Pastor Swopes states that he knows the town very well as he served as president of the town board for a year and a half.  Moreover, it would appear many others in the small town have not heard about the planned Craig Bodeker film, there has been no local advertising about the event, nor is there likely to be any parking at the Abundant Life Fellowship “church,” if many show up to attend.

Pastor Ben Swopes states that he believes “that there is only one race, the human race”  and that “we are to share the gospel to the whole human race.”

A Decision to Make – Defy the Legacy of the Past and Promote Human Rights – Or – Hope for the Best?

But despite Pastor Swopes’ hopeful, loving, and inspirational view of his neighbors, history shows that parts of Indiana still must shake off remnants of a past era when white supremacists held power in Indiana, and where cities such as nearby Martinsville, Indiana was considered by some as a “sundown town” where blacks dared not venture after dark.  Martinsville and other parts of Indiana continue to seek to defy that legacy of racist hate, and seek to build a new reputation of hope and understanding for Indiana.  But there remain those who continue to seek to drag Indiana and America back to the “bad old days” of racial hatred and division.

Indiana's "Fiery Cross" from the 1920s when Many Thousands Supported the Ku Klux Klan
Indiana’s “Fiery Cross” from the 1920s when Many Thousands Supported the Ku Klux Klan

It is no small irony that the “white nationalist” Craig Bodeker film event at the “Abundant Life Fellowship church” should fall on the Christian Good Friday on the cusp of the most important spiritual holiday in the Christian religion, their “Easter resurrection day”.  Should Christians who honor Jesus’ commandment to love one another remain silent as racist “white nationalism” ideologies are being spread on behalf of “Christian” events as Christians throughout Indiana, America, and the world are preparing for Easter?

Christians and human rights activists struggle with the decision to make over the remnants of racial supremacist ideologies and groups, such as the growing efforts by some to promote “white nationalism” in America.  But while many believe that they can just “ignore the extremists” in hopes that they will simply go away, the unfortunate truth is that every year we are finding more and more groups being added to the Southern Poverty Law Center hate group listings.  We are seeing racial intolerance and hate speech growing more and more in our public discourse and in society.

Furthermore, this comes less than a week after federal government raids on the “Christian militia” Hutaree in Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana.

When will Americans reach the point where “looking the other way” no longer works?  After a white supremacist terrorist attack on U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in June 2009, and a foiled terrorist plot where a white nationalist Stormfront forum member sought to kill 102 Americans, what more will it take?  How many more churches, synagogues, and mosques need to be defaced in America?  How many more racial slurs need to be hurled?  How many more black Americans need to be spit upon in our streets?  At what point, do Americans and American Christians need to actively defy racism in America, especially racism in the name of “Christianity”?

In addition to Easter this weekend in America, many will also recall that April 4 is the day that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated.  Responsible for Equality And Liberty (R.E.A.L.) honored his sacrifice to America on the Lincoln Memorial on March 28, to the displeasure of “white nationalist” groups such as Occidental Dissent, where Indiana’s Matt Parrott writes.

As Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. gave his life to his nation for his “dream,” so we too must realize that we have “a responsibility.” We believe that Americans need to be responsible for equality and liberty.   Perhaps only then will we finally all be able to say together that we are “Free at last! Free at last! Thank God Almighty, we are free at last!”

=======================================

Responsible for Equality And Liberty (R.E.A.L.) supports our unqualified, universal human rights for all.  We urge “white nationalist” supporters and all those who promote hate against others to drop the burden of the hate of from their hearts.

Choose love, not hate. Love wins.

choose-love-not-hate

Note: R.E.A.L. inaccurately reported in our initial report that Craig Bodeker was also going to speak at the Morgantown event, and we have since learned that only his film is going to be shown.  We apologize for the inaccuracy.  We also apologize to Mr. Bodeker on this inaccuracy.

In Washington DC, Responsible for Equality And Liberty’s (R.E.A.L.) public awareness event on our shared universal human rights of equality and liberty drew support from the public at the Lincoln Memorial, even on an overcast and rainy afternoon on March 28.

Per R.E.A.L.’ s announcement, the public awareness event was R.E.A.L.’s annual recognition of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s assassination on April 4, and remembering how Dr. King gave his life for his country.  (As April 4 is Easter Day this year, R.E.A.L. held the event this year on March 28.) R.E.A.L.’s Jeffrey Imm played an audio recording of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s last speech before he died, and asked the public that while Dr. King stated on these same Lincoln Memorial reflecting pool steps “I have a dream,” it is our obligation to say “I have a responsibility” to our fellow Americans and fellow human beings to defend our universal human rights of equality and liberty.

Jeffrey Imm urged people of all beliefs and all faiths to stop on April 4 and take a moment of reflective silence or prayer in remembrance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on April 4.

R.E.A.L. also intermixed civil rights music along with speaking on major issues of the day in terms of human rights issues, including:

Racial supremacism and the need for racial harmony and respect. R.E.A.L. addressed the growing problem of racial supremacism in America, and R.E.A.L.’s efforts in defying white supremacist efforts to spread hate in the Washington DC area.  Jeffrey Imm recalled last year’s event at the Lincoln Memorial on April 4, 2009 warning of the rise of such hate groups, and the subsequent white supremacist terrorist attack on the U.S. Holocaust Memorial on June 20, 2009.  R.E.A.L. also addressed its efforts in defying the efforts of “white nationalist hate groups” such as the American Renaissance, Stormfront, and Occidental Dissent in seeking to expand their recruitment in the Washington DC area.

Misogyny and the need for gender equality and respect. R.E.A.L. addressed the need for Constitutional equality for all American women, stating “the words you see engraved in the wall of the Lincoln Memorial — that all men are created equal — we need to also recognize Constitutional equality for all American women to be equal as well.  That too should be a declaration, never a question.”  R.E.A.L. addressed the misogyny and violence against American women, including “honor killings” and hate against Muslim women in America (such as the November 2009 case of Noor Almaleki in Arizona), as well as such “honor killings,” stonings, oppression, and hate against Muslim and non-Muslim women around the world.   R.E.A.L. addressed the horrific attacks on other women around the world, from the abuse of Chinese women in Communist China, to the genocide of women in Sudan’s Darfur, and the rape and murder of women in the Congo.  (Mohamed Yahya later separately addressed the issues of Sudan and Darfur.  This will be addressed in a separate posting.)

Denial of religious freedom, the challenge of totalitarianism and religious extremism, and the need for religious freedom and pluralism. R.E.A.L. addressed the many whose religious freedom continues to be denied around the world today, such as in Communist China, where Christians and Muslims (and people with other belief structures such as the Falun Gong) are arrested and their houses of worship destroyed by the totalitarian Communist government, simply for seeking freedom of conscience.  R.E.A.L discussed those who would deny freedom of religion based on a religious extremist view that is intolerant of religious pluralism and freedom of conscience, and stood on behalf of those converts to Christianity from Islam who were being oppressed as “apostates.”  R.E.A.L. praised the efforts of the group “Set My People Free to Worship Me” who were planning global events on Easter eve, April 3, calling for religious freedom for such Christian converts.  R.E.A.L. addressed the challenges of people in minority religions in nations such as Pakistan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Iran, where religious freedom, pluralism, and tolerance rejected the freedom of religion for Christians, Hindus, and other sects of Islam. R.E.A.L. condemned the disease of violence against people of minority religions around the world, including the recent massacres in Nigeria of over 500 Christians.  R.E.A.L.’s Jeffrey Imm called for support of religious freedom and freedom of conscience as part of our universal human rights around the world.  R.E.A.L. also reminded Americans that America has the responsibility to set an example for defending freedom of religion in our nation, and that all religions must condemn, denounce, and seek the end of those who would vandalize and attack houses of worship of any faith in America, as we so often see today, in attacks on churches, synagogues, and mosques.

R.E.A.L. message at the Lincoln Memorial public awareness event was:
— “Human Rights are Your Right”
— “Human Rights are Your Responsibility”
— “Be Responsible”
— “Be Responsible for Equality And Liberty”

At the conclusion of the event, R.E.A.L. and other members of the public said a public prayer for peace, justice, and human rights on the Lincoln Memorial reflecting pool steps, remembering Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and calling for all Americans and all human beings, to “Choose Love, Not Hate.  Love Wins.”

Washington DC: Mohamed Yahya Speaks on Darfur, Sudan at Lincoln Memorial

On March 28, 2010, at Responsible for Equality And Liberty’s (R.E.A.L.) public awareness event on human rights at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC, Damanga Executive Director Mohamed Yahya spoke on the pressing issues of Darfur and Sudan.  Mohamed Yahya passionately conveyed to the public the continuing suffering of the people in Darfur and Sudan.  He addressed the continuing genocide of the Darfuri people, and their suffering and poverty, including the attacks by the Janjaweed and the refusal of the Omar Al-Bashir government to respect the Darfuri people’s human rights.

While crowds around the Lincoln Memorial stopped to listen, Mohamed Yahya told them of the continuing need for Americans to get involved in helping the Darfuri people, and he urged them to call for the Obama administration to take action on Darfur.  He reminded the public of pledges made by members of the administration during the electoral campaign, and then the failure to take aggressive action to bring justice to the Darfuri people today.  He reminded the public of the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) indictments against Sudan president Omar Al-Bashir.  Moreover, Mr. Yahya pointed out, as he did in his recent article “A Deal with a Devil,” that there can be no peace in Sudan without justice and human rights for Darfur.

As volunteers passed out fliers on Damanga and the Darfur genocide, Mohamed Yahya asked the public to consider the importance of “saving just one human life,” and how taking such personal responsibility would provide an indelible sense of accomplishment, purpose, and meaning in our lives as individuals.  “Then imagine,” Mohamed Yahya added, “how much more would it mean to help save a million or more lives?”  Over 400,000 have been killed  in Darfur, countless women have been raped and abused in Darfur, and there are an estimated 2.6 million  Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) at risk.  Despite an abundance of oil and other natural resources controlled by the Omar Al-Bashir government, the vast majority of Sudan’s people live in poverty, and many children die daily from malnutrition and poverty.

R.E.A.L.’s Jeffrey Imm then concluded the public awareness event with an inter-faith prayer and moment of reflection from people of all beliefs and conscience on behalf of the Darfuri people.  He invited members of the public to join them on the Lincoln Memorial reflecting pool steps to pray for peace, justice, and human rights for the people of Darfur and Sudan.

The March 28, 2010 Responsible for Equality And Liberty (R.E.A.L.) public awareness event was held on the Washington DC Lincoln Memorial reflecting pool steps as R.E.A.L.’s annual remembrance of the death of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. who was assassinated on April 4, 1968, and who R.E.A.L.’s Jeffrey Imm praised as a hero for human rights everywhere who gave his life for all of us.  As Easter Sunday falls on April 4 this year, R.E.A.L. was holding this event on March 28.

The Lincoln Memorial reflecting pool steps are where Dr. King gave his inspirational message to America “I Have A Dream.”

The R.E.A.L. message at the March 28 Lincoln Memorial event was that while Dr. King had a dream, we have a responsibility to human rights for our fellow human beings.  Jeffrey Imm stated “human rights are our rights, and human rights are our responsibility.  This responsibility includes the responsibility to speak out, to not stay silent, and to demand action by our government and international bodies on the continuing oppression, continuing genocide, and continuing injustice in Darfur.  Be responsible.  Be responsible for equality and liberty.”

Responsible for Equality and Liberty (R.E.A.L.)’s orange ribbon campaign is to promote consistency in equality and liberty for all people of every race, gender, and religion, in the United States and the world.  We also know that without a consistent commitment to equality, we cannot realize human liberty.

R.E.A.L.'s Orange Ribbon Campaign for Equality And Liberty
R.E.A.L.'s Orange Ribbon Campaign for Equality And Liberty

1. Promoting Racial Equality – Defying Racial Supremacism. The truths that we hold self-evident as human beings and as Americans that all human beings are created equal is a fundamental part of our identities.  But there are increasing numbers of extremist and hate groups who seek to deny such truths.   The number of hate groups, especially white supremacist hate groups, continues to rise in America.  In June 2009, we witnessed a white supremacist terrorist attack in Washington DC where Stephen Tyrone Johns was murdered, and we continue see hate from the Stormfront group members that continue to promote violent attacks in America.  One such Stormfront white supremacist, Daniel Cowart, will be coming up for trial. Other trials of white supremacist hate group members are also upcoming.  We must not continue to ignore the growing threat of racial supremacist hate – we must send a message to racial supremacists – Never Again.

Stephen Tyrone Johns Will Not Die in Vain (Photo: U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum)

At R.E.A.L.’ s April 4, 2009 public awareness event on the Lincoln Memorial reflecting pool steps last year, we warned of such growing racial hate groups.  We called for the answer in Love, Not Hate.  Even in our protest of the “white nationalist” “American Renaissance” group (based in Virginia) that sought to spread racial hate in February in the Northern Virginia/ Washington DC area – we urged love and racial harmony there as well.  After our February 2010 public awareness campaign with the public and local hotel, the American Renaissance biannual conference was canceled for the first time in 16 years.  Our voice in defying racial hate can be heard.  Our shared consensus on standing for racial equality, diversity, and harmony does have power and influence.

Yes, We Can promote racial equality and defy racial supremacism.  But we must act, and we must get our message of love for our universal human rights and our fellow human beings out to the public.  We need to urge them to Choose Love, Not Hate.  Love Wins.

Pray for and Reach Out to Those Hearts Burdened by Hate - Ask Them to Rejoin the Family of Humanity
Pray for and Reach Out to Those Hearts Burdened by Hate - Ask Them to Rejoin the Consensus that Defends Human Rights, Human Equality, & Human Dignity

2. Promoting Gender Equality – Defying Misogyny. Not Just Men, But All Women Are Also Created Equal.  This is why we continue to call for full Constitutional Equality for women in America.  Surely, America cannot be the last place where we fight for women’s rights, it must be the first place. American women deserve Constitutional Equality – because they are worth it.  That must be a national declaration, never a question.

Our support for consistent human rights in being responsible for equality and liberty always includes all women as a fundamental basis for our activism.  No matter what the issue is, somewhere, somehow, women are ultimately affected.

congo-women-2-300x200

But our struggle for our sisters’ gender equality and America and around the world has many facets.  It includes the continuing violence, abuse, and degrading of women in America.  It includes the 1,000 women raped every month in the Congo as acts of war and genocide.  It includes the millions of women oppressed by Communist totalitarianism in Communist China.  It includes those women who are abused by religious fanatics in America who think they have a God-given right to sexual abuse.  It includes threats to women in America and around the world by those who believe that they have a right to kill, stone, beat, and oppress Muslim women.

We stand in solidarity with our sisters in American and around the world for their gender equality, freedom, and lives.  Especially in the case of our oppressed sisters everywhere, we urge all to Choose Love, Not Hate.  Love Wins.

3. Defending Religious Freedom – Defying Religious Extremism and Totalitarian Oppression. In being responsible for equality and liberty, we also defend our universal human right to religious freedom for all.  Today, many do not have such rights of religious freedom.  Others live in constant fear and threat for exercising this most basic human right of freedom of conscience.  We stand to speak in support of such freedoms for all.

In America, we see hatred of those with different religions too often.  We are responsible for standing up for religious pluralism and freedom in America and around the world.  This means rejecting those who would defile churches, mosques, synagogues, and other houses of worship.  We reject those ideologies of hate and individuals who promote hatred against any religion, including those who would deny all human beings the freedom of conscience to change their religion.  We reject hate groups in America such as the so-called “Westboro Baptist Church” “hate group” , as well as those whose mission is to spread hatred against and attack people of other faiths.

In America Today: Churches, Mosques, Synagogues, Other Houses of Worship Attacked
In America Today: Churches, Mosques, Synagogues, Other Houses of Worship Attacked

In too many nations of the world, religious freedom is not even a consideration.  In Communist China, totalitarians have denied both Christians and Muslims rights to freely worship, and have conducted campaigns to destroy houses of worship and arrest those who dare to freely exercise their religious beliefs.

Communist China - despite Communist detention of pastors, 500 of Wanbang church continue to worship (ChinaAid)
Communist China - despite Communist detention of pastors, 500 of Wanbang church continue to worship (ChinaAid)

An international human rights group, Set My People Free, will be holding events on April 3 in locations around the world calling for freedom of people of all faiths to worship, where converts to other faiths in many Muslim majority nations are currently oppressed.  Such oppression is horrifying – in Pakistan, mobs of thousands have gone to Pakistan Christian villages, burned homes, churches, and people alive.  In Egypt, Coptic Christians have been victims of terrorist attacks as they have exited from Christmas Eve services.

Freedom of conscience is our commitment to equality of worship.
We stand united, responsible for such equality and liberty, in America and around the world.

Dr. King Had A Dream – We Have A Responsibility

On the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool steps, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once told us “I have a dream.” We continue to honor that dream and that vision not simply by good intentions but also by action.  As Dr. King had a dream, We Have a Responsibility.

We have a Responsibility for Equality And Liberty.

These causes are all related to our common commitment, our common consensus, our shared universal human rights of equality and liberty.  We share this consensus with one another.  Let us use this day, this opportunity, on March 28 to help the public become aware of how much we have in common, and how the using the power behind our shared commitment to equality and liberty can change America – and can change the world.

As we urge those in America and around the world to…

Choose Love, Not Hate.  Love Wins.

Sudan’s Darfur and “A Deal with a Devil”

A Deal with a Devil
by Mohamed Yahya, Damanga

We are saddened by the so-called Doha Peace Negotiations that were signed in Qatar last week between Al-Bashir of the Sudan Government and other groups.   This included Dr. Khalil Ibrahim from the JEM- Justice and Equality movement and Dr. Tigani Sessi from the smaller LJM- Liberation Justice Movement.

This was a very controversial agreement that completely neglected the concerns of the majority of Darfuri people.  JEM and LJM should have rejected any deal with the ICC Indicted war criminal Omar Al-Bashir.  Al-Bashir’s arrest warrant was announced by the prosecutor Luis Moreno Ocampo on March 4, 2009.

The Darfuri people can’t accept such deals with a government that has slaughtered more than 450,000 innocent civilians in Darfur alone from 2003 to date. This is a Sudanese government that has not respected its own people or any agreement made before – from South Sudan to Darfur and Beja at the Eastern Sudan.

Peace and human rights are not mutually exclusive choices.  We know that real peace begins with respecting our human rights, respecting justice, and respecting human dignity.  The process for peace will begin with justice and human rights for the Darfuri people.

We strongly believe that no peace was honored before, especially when made with splintered rebel groups, and when the main core demands of the Darfuri people were not addressed.
•    Both parties deliberately ignored even mentioning justice and the accountability in their negotiation agenda.
•    They ignored the disarmament of the marauding Janjaweed militias, who are the allies of Al-Bashir government in Darfur.
•    They failed to address the replacement of those settled in the villages of the IDP’s and refugees.
•    Moreover, they failed to recognize that security and ceasefire agreements were never honored by the Al-Bashir government.

Al-Bashir took advantage of the Doha meetings and ordered his Janjaweed and Sudan Popular Defense Army-to attack the “Jabel Marra” area by airplanes and tanks with massive campaign and destroyed more than 36 villages within a week.  This resulted in more than 400 causalities, and over 100,000 displaced from the whole Jabel Marra area.

Despite all of this destruction, Al-Bashir has been allowed to continue violating the Darfuri people’s human rights of free expressions, movement, assembly, and life itself.  The people of Darfur are targeted inside and outside their homes and forced to register to vote for Al-Bashir even by using their food distribution cards. Otherwise, no food or aid is allowed. All kinds of Intimidation and brutal harassment are used against Al-Bashir’s opponents.

It is immoral that the whole civilized world leaders are watching this shameful scenario of “honoring the criminals” of the  Sudanese government beginning with Doha peace negotiations that seek to legitimize Omar Al-Bashir, who is  a man worse than Hitler and Saddam Hussein, coming to power in a fake democracy.

It is also terribly sad to see the U.S. government and the U.S. Special Envoy for Sudan, General Scott Gration, giving support to Al-Bashir and his rogue NIF-National Islamic Front regime that hosted Osama Bin Laden in the Capitol Khartoum in early 1990’s for almost five years.  This is the same Sudanese government that has terrorized its own people, as well as hosted international terrorists.

It is unfortunate to see the Obama administration, United Nations, African Union, Arab Leagues, European Union, and the Islamic world to come together this time to support this genocidal regime, when they never came together before to support the victims of Darfur.  Where has such world unity been to restore justice and human rights in Sudan for a lasting peace?  Darfur has largely been abandoned, while the Darfuri people’s human rights have been taken away.  Too many have accepted a policy to “let Darfur die.”

The most shocking phenomena was that even those leaders, such as Dr. Khalil in JEM  and Dr. Tigani Sessi of LJM, have shown a lack of leadership because of their power ambitions, their narrow visions of the people’s needs, and their unwillingness to prioritize human rights and justice for all of the Sudanese people.  At the Doha peace negotiations, these leaders have acted in their own interests, regardless of what the ultimate results will be.   Their focus has instead been their personal selfish goals wrapped by tribal circles and political Ideological agendas.

Dr. Khalil was known as a former Mujahedeen leader who fought against our own Christians in South Sudan, inspired at that time by Dr. Hassan El-Turabi.  This was before he was being kicked out of power by Al-Bashir, which was the main reason for Dr. Khalil to escape Khartoum to form JEM. It is an issue of personal vindication for him, rather than Darfur cause for him.  Both Al-Bashir and Dr. Khalil are old friends and Students of El-Turabi, so they are simply” two faces for one coin” of NIF/NCP.

In addition, Dr. Tigani Sessi of LJM has not been engaged in actively defending Darfur since he left Sudan over 20 years. He has not been popular even with his own FUR Tribe. He was only imposed and recommended by the Sudan government to lead a small group of the LJM at the Doha negotiations. He was engaged because he is willing to listen to the genocidal regime of Al-Bashir and could easily used to pass their agenda through him against the people of Darfur.  He has not demonstrated strength and hasn’t fought with the rebels anywhere.

This peace is nothing more than a ceremony as many have said. The people of Darfur can’t afford another war, but that will be imminent. The new coalition of the National Islamic Front will turn the war against their own people of Darfur.

A “Darfur versus Darfur” war is on the horizon.  The Khartoum Arab government will claim to steer clear of such a war, while they also fuel the upcoming phase of the war between the SLA- Abdulwahid faction and other possible alliances from those Darfuri rebels rejected the deal in Qatar.  “Slaves against slaves” will be the Al-Bashir government’s policy of divide and rule.

The future may also see other possible wars with the same new Islamic alliances against Southern Sudan, even if the South secedes due to the referendum that is scheduled for 2011. There’s no guarantee for any lasting peace in Sudan since this NCP/NIF remains in power in the country.

History is repeating itself again In Sudan and it could be for the worst.   This is especially true for
Darfur and other marginalized areas that have never enjoyed any significant representation to share power or wealth in their own country since the independence of Sudan in January 1956 from United Kingdom.

This time, the worst form of colonialism will be from fascists and fundamentalists within Sudan itself. Mr. El-Turabi will have renewed influence with Dr. Khalil’s arrival to Khartoum or Darfur. Mr. Sadiq al-Mahdi, the former Prime Minister and “Umma Party” leader that pulled out of the power in Al-Bashir’s June 1989 coup, will also have renewed influence and power.  Dr. Tigani Sessi, who signed on behalf of the LJM in Doha, will be back to Khartoum. It is very sad news for major Darfuri people who will never forget what Sadiq al-Mahdi and Tigani Sessi did to them while the Umma Party was in power. The Umma Party has created the first conflict in Darfur when It favored Arab tribes in Darfur against the black African tribes, and created special militias called in that time ” Al-firs an.”  “Al-firs an” is an Arabic version of the term “the Knights” in English.

Weapons were provided by Sadiq al-Mahdi to arm this “Al-Firs an” militia, which started the attacks against the black farmers while they grow their crops  These weapons came from the Umma defense minister and General Fadlalla Burma Nasser, who at that time was part of the Arab tribes. The Arab Firsan militia drove their animals into the farms and started shooting anyone who blocked their animals. It was the beginning of the Darfur war era during that time in the early 1980’s .

Then the regional conflict was exacerbated by the war between Libya and Chad. Thousands of pro-Libya fighters (the so-called “Arab Gathering Forces,”  “Arab Islamic Army Corps,” “Olad Salih Group”) were allowed by the Sadiq al-Mahdi government at that time to use Darfur territory to attack Chad from East.  This happened while Libyan troops were attacking Chad from Libyan borders with Chad.  The war between Chad and Libya was known as the “Ouzo War,” because both Libya and Chad claimed the Ouzo area belongs to its territory

After being defeated by Hussein Habry of Chad, these forces scattered in the area from Chad to Darfur and Central Africa looking for safe haven.  This situation contributed to the disaster of extensive distribution of cheaply sold arms to Arab herders in the area; some Arab herders were given such weapons as free gifts as well. This helped to create the chaos in Darfur from that time, with the Umma Party playing a big role in that conflict.

When Al-Bashir came to the power by  coup in 1989, he recruited these same elements, reorganized them, trained them, and paid them salaries, and provided them logistical support to use against the same black Darfuris from Massaleit, Fur, Dajo, Zagawa, Gimir Tama Bargo and other minorities.

Under Al-Bashir’s rule, the only difference was that the militia’s name of Al-Firsan was changed to “Janjaweed,” and the renamed “Janjaweed” militia began using more sophisticated weapons and trucks, in addition to horses and camels.

Most Darfuris will never forget these grievances. They will never forget how Sadiq al-Mahdi of the Umma Party humiliated them in many ways during his two terms ruling Sudan in 1964 and 1986.  Mr. Mahdi never made any development in Darfur; no schools, hospitals, or even wells for water were built in Darfur. He advised Darfuris to send their children to” Koranic Khalawas” instead of schools, to prevent them from learning about science and politics, so that would not have the chance to understand their human rights or develop the ambition to demand power for Darfuris.

This is the same mentality of all Arabs of the ruling parties in Sudan. It is their ultimate policy to keep the black African Sudanese — from Darfur to South Sudan, Nuba Mountains, and the Beja of East — as illiterate and marginalized so that it will be easier for them to rule over forever.

These tactics have not changed and have only become worse with the Al-Bashir government.  They are all the same: NCP, Umma, DUP, Communist, Bathists, and the rest of Arab’s current new parties.  Sudan and Darfur doesn’t need more Mahadis, Turabis, Communists, or Islamists.

Let the people of Darfur and the rest of those marginalized people in Sudan have justice first, then they will decide who they will choose to govern them.  Flawed peace agreements have been beginning with Abuja in 2006 with Sudan and SLA splintered factions of Arkuwi Mennawi in Doha.  Such flawed peace agreements choose a version of peace that ignores justice and ignores human rights.  There is no lasting peace that does not begin with justice and human rights.  The only ones who benefit from such flawed peace agreements are the Sudanese genocidal government that seeks to stay longer in power to kill more people and destabilize the entire region.

The US and the United Nations along with the international community must stop the Sudan government from committing more atrocities. We need to hold them all accountable, instead of promoting them.  No peace will be without justice, and the only way for long lasting peace in Sudan would be through Justice.

Thank you.
