Responsible for Equality And Liberty (R.E.A.L.) urges all Christians to reject and condemn this message of hate from the Westboro Baptist Church. Moreover, we urge all Christians to convey to Christian-named “hate groups” such as the “Westboro Baptist Church” that John 13:34 “A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.”
Vandals deface sign of future mosque, Muslim center
— CTV Ottawa reports: — “Ottawa’s Muslim community is expressing concern after a sign marking the future location of a mosque and Muslim community centre in Barrhaven was defaced.”
— “The organization says several similar instances of hate have been reported at mosques in Hamilton, Calgary and Waterloo in the last four months. A mosque in Pickering was spray-painted earlier this week.”
— “Ottawa’s Muslim community says although the vandalism has them concerned, they believe the vandals’ sentiment is not widespread.”
— “The red and black graffiti was discovered by residents in the area early Friday morning. It has since been removed. Ottawa police are investigating.”
— “The latest statistics show there were 785 hate crimes committed in 2007.”
— “Jewish people are listed as the most frequent targets, accounting for 16 per cent of hate crime victims. Muslims are targeted about four per cent of the time.”

Seattle PI News reports on the sentencing of a white supremacist Eric Lee Garner to 1 and 1/2 years in prison for assault threatening to use a knife on a Muslim woman and her 6 month old baby.
“A 24-year-old man accused of threatening to cut a woman and her infant because she is Muslim was sentenced to 1 ½ years in prison Friday following a conviction on hate crime and assault charges.”
“Eric Lee Garner, a homeless man recently of Auburn, threatened to harm the woman and her 6-month-old son as she waited in line at the Seattle Indian Health Board office on July 1. Garner, police say, began yelling at the woman for wearing a headscarf before displaying a sheathed fixed blade knife and threatening to cut her genitals.”
“‘I’m going to cut you and your baby with this knife!’ Garner allegedly said. Police say Garner continued to make anti-Muslim remarks throughout the tirade.”
“Garner’s legal troubles did not end with Friday’s hearing — he is currently facing rape charges on allegations that he sexually assaulted a 13-year-old at knifepoint.”
“Sentencing Garner to the longest standard sentence for the crimes, King County Superior Court Judge Laura Inveen noted Garner’s apparent history of violence.”
“‘You resort to violence,’ the judge told Garner. ‘You’ve been resorting to violence for a very long time.'”
“In the July 1 attack, Garner was stopped from drawing the knife by a worker at the office. According to charging documents, the worker at the office grabbed the weapon and wrested it from him, according to police. Garner then recovered the knife and fled, police said.”
“Following his arrest days later, prosecutors say Garner continued to make threatening statements.”
“‘In this incident, the defendant yelled numerous inflammatory comments about Muslims at a Muslim woman who was a complete stranger,’ Deputy Prosecutor Val Richey said in court documents. ‘He told the arresting officers that he had a fully automatic AK-47 that he bought after 9/11 and that he was a white supremacist.'”
The Manchester Evening News quotes Ali Anees, chairman of the Eccles and Salford Mosque, who told reporters that: “We have had problems regularly. In March, someone threw paint over the outside of the mosque and wrote graffiti. Then at about 2am last Saturday two men got into the grounds. One is on film throwing bricks which had been taken from a wall of a neighbouring building. They attacked the building twice in about 20 minutes. Three sections of the windows were smashed and bricks were found inside the office of the mosque. We had another incident in March when eggs were thrown at people leaving the mosque by people driving past. After a lot of damage was caused in 2006, we had people come forward to help us and in the last two years we have spent £425,000 on new buildings. We have up to 500 members and they are very angry about the attacks. We want the culprits caught.”

Responsible for Equality And Liberty (R.E.A.L.) supports our unqualified, universal human rights for all people.
We are concerned by the transatlantic effort by a European-based group to promote anti-Islam hatred in America. While R.E.A.L. challenges religious extremist views that defy human rights, we reject those who seek to promote hatred of religious identity groups. Last September 2009, R.E.A.L. reported on the efforts of American group Stop Islamization of America (SIOA) that was founded based on a European group Stop Islamization of Europe (SIOE), whose motto is “Islamophobia is the highest form of common sense.”
INN reported that the original SIOA plans to disrupt Muslim prayer on Capitol Hill on the SIOA website stated “every protest of this takiya-jihad-dawa event… [to] include some component of donkey, dog, and women.” INN also reported “The reason for this unusual suggestion is made clear on the SIOA site as well: Muslim doctrine, according to the SIOA, says that ‘Islamic prayer is nullified if a dog, a woman, or a donkey are present.'”
However, thankfully for America tolerance and religious freedoms, the SIOA plans to use their protest against Muslim prayer in Washington DC did not constitute a launchpad for the organization.
The SIOE group stated: “On April 2, 2010, the Stop Islamisation of Europe (SIOE) group leader Anders Gravers reported “We have now formed a new board for SIOA. The new board of SIOA is: Pamela Geller, Robert Spencer, Stephen Gash and Anders Gravers. The leaders of SIOA are Pamela Geller and Robert Spencer. Stephen and I have discussed for quite some time the fact that SIOA has not developed in the direction we wanted. There are groups enough who just write about the danger of Islam, but very few groups that actually do something to try to stop the Islamisation of the Western civilization. SIOA was meant to be a group that should take action, staging demonstrations, happenings and events against the Islamisation of the U.S. The way Stephen and I see it, we need to make SIOA more active. And in order to do that, we have now — after working for a long time to persuade them to take this on — gotten a yes from both Pamela Geller and Robert Spencer to become the leaders of SIOA. We think they are the right people to bring SIOA to the forefront in the fight against the Islamisation of the U.S.”

In Europe and the United Kingdom, the Europe SIOE group has lead anti-Islam protests against mosques.
In the United Kingdom, the SIOE has had two protests in front of Harrow Central Mosque in September 2009 and December 2009. In the September 2009 SIOE protests at the Harrow mosque, there was violence between supporters and counter protesters, as SIOE protest supporters went to the mosque chanting “Muslims out” while anti-SIOE opponents shouted back. In the December 2009 SIOE protest at the Harrow mosque, the SIOE reportedly refused the opportunity to dialogue with leaders of the Harrow mosque.
Responsible for Equality And Liberty (R.E.A.L.) has repeatedlystated our opposition to the SIOA and to the SIOE. (Update: For the record, R.E.A.L. has reached out to these two new leaders of the SIOA and urged them NOT to get involved with the anti-Islam political activist SIOA group, as we can only see this as a source of significant division in America, as we have seen in Europe.)
R.E.A.L. rejects the SIOE’s protests against houses of worship, and we reject protests and attempts to intimidate worshipers at any house of worship.
On the previous SIOA website, a leader and attendee at a European SIOE event stated that “multiculturalism, tolerance, and ‘niceness’ are destroying the foundations of our cultures,” but that misses the point. In fact, our iberties are based not on individual “cultures,” but on our universal human rights of equality and liberty.
Our challenge to groups and ideologies that defy such universal human rights are not because we reject diverse cultures, not because we reject tolerance, and not because we reject “niceness.” Our challenge to groups and ideologies that defy such universal human rights is because we consistently support universal human rights as being Responsible for Equality And Liberty.
That includes challenging those who promote “Islamophobia.”

— “The gang boarded the train at Loughborough on Easter Sunday evening, after what British Transport Police believe was a drinking session.”
— “Officers have described it as an ‘unpleasant and nasty’ incident.”
Daily Mail reports: “Police clash with right-wing demonstrators during protest against plans for new mosque”
— “Violent clashes broke out between riot police and right-wing protesters today during a demonstration against plans for a new mosque.”
— “About 2,000 members of the English Defence League descended on Dudley town centre in the West Midlands to demonstrate at plans for a new mosque.”
— “Some of the protesters broke out of a pen in a car park, breaking down metal fences and throwing the metal brackets at officers, who were armed with riot shields and batons.”
— “Members of the demonstration started fighting their own stewards who were trying to calm them down as they attacked the fences penning them in.”
— “The EDL had put signs up which read ‘Labour forcing mosques on Britain’ and ‘No one wants this mosque’.”
— “Some demonstrators held placards reading ‘Muslim bombers off our streets’ and ‘Say no to the mosque’.”
— “The national anthem was played on a speaker system while demonstrators waved the flag of St George.”
— “Dudley Council said in a statement on its website: ‘We didn’t invite the EDL to our town and we don’t want them here.'”
— “But the council said it did not have the power to ban the event.”
— “It said: ‘The council has worked closely with the police to do all it can to protect and support local people, traders, businesses and the town centre.”
— “‘The EDL is proposing a static protest (rather than a march) and there is no legal requirement for an organiser of such a protest to notify the police or the council of their definite plans.”
— “‘West Midlands Police is committed to facilitating lawful and peaceful protests, while supporting and protecting all communities.'”
— “The mosque is planned for Hall Street with details on the design and positioning of the building due for submission by July 2011.”
— “In July last year the council lost a high court challenge to prevent the planning application being given the go ahead.”
— “The EDL protesters managed to break out of the car park by pulling down fences and barging their way past riot police officers.”
— “About half the group then ran off through the town.”
— “Lines of riot police officers fought running battles with protesters as they tried to contain the mob who pulled down barriers blocking off roads.”
— “Nick Mainwood, 42, from Oldbury, West Midlands, said he tried to help an elderly woman who suffered a panic attack during the protest.”
— “He said: ‘I came down here for a peaceful protest but it was horrible, absolutely horrible.'”
— “Patricia Taylor, 61, said she was trying to get home after a day out shopping with her 19-month old grandson, Ashley.”
— “‘We’ve been trying to get home since dinner time and the police have told us to go one way and then another but it is all blocked. It’s terrifying with the little one and we just want to get home.'”
— “Unite Against Fascism (UAF) held a peaceful protest in the town earlier today in an area which could not be seen from the rival demonstration.”

According to the ADL, “Baker allegedly spray-painted swastikas and the words ‘White Power’ on the walls.” ADL also reported that Baker was a member of the racist hate group “Christian Identity,” and all of the members of the arson group were “believed to be members of the white supremacist group Aryan Alliance.” ADL reported that “Stone told officials that his role in the fire got him ‘two stripes’ from Baker, his Christian Identity sponsor. He said Christian Identity members earn stripes ‘for committing acts of violence against enemies,’ according to the affidavit.'”
Tennessee Man Sentenced to 183 Months in Prison for Burning Islamic Center
WASHINGTON – Senior Judge Robert L. Echols of the Middle District of Tennessee today sentenced Eric Ian Baker to 183 months in prison for vandalizing and burning down the Islamic Center of Columbia, Tenn., the Justice Department announced. Baker pleaded guilty on Sept. 18, 2009, to destruction of religious property and using fire to commit a felony.
Baker, 34, previously admitted to the court that he and two others constructed Molotov cocktail explosive devices, ignited them and used them to destroy the mosque on Feb. 9, 2008. Baker further admitted that he committed the arson because of the religious character of the property and that he painted swastikas and the phrase “White Power” on the mosque in the course of the arson.
One of Baker’s co-defendants, Michael Corey Golden, was sentenced to 171 months for his role in the arson. The other co-defendant, Jonathan Edward Stone, pleaded guilty but has not yet been sentenced.
“The right to worship without fear of this kind of violent interference is among our most fundamental civil rights,” said Thomas E. Perez, Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division. “We will aggressively prosecute anyone who seeks to intimidate or injure any congregation because of what they believe, how they worship, or who they are.”
“This type of crime strikes at the heart of our civil rights and religious freedoms in America. I am very pleased that through local, state and federal cooperation, all defendants responsible for this vile attack have been brought to justice,” said U.S. Attorney Edward M. Yarbrough for the Middle District of Tennessee.
This case was investigated by the FBI, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Tennessee State Bomb and Arson and the Columbia, Tenn., Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Hal McDonough from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Nashville and Trial Attorney Jonathan Skrmetti from the Civil Rights Division prosecuted the case.
