DC: Egyptian Copt Christian Group Holds Press Conference

Report by The Christian Post by Michelle Vu:
“Egyptian President’s Visit Magnifies Christian, Muslim Tension”

“WASHINGTON – What started off as a typical press conference turned into a heated exchange Monday when two Egyptian American Muslims challenged statements made by the Coptic Christian speakers.”

“At the press event, the Coptic panel, which included representatives from Voice of the Copts, National American Coptic Assembly, and Young People, decried Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak over the grave human rights situation in the predominantly Muslim country and denounced his visit to the United States. Two Muslims who joined the audience, however, took offense to some of the comments.”

“Both sides criticized the Mubarak administration as corrupt and said they wanted greater respect for religious freedom in Egypt. But arguments began when one of the speakers linked sharia, or Islamic law, to the kidnapping of Coptic girls in Egypt.”

“As tempers flared, the Christian panelists and the Muslim audience members shouted at each other as non-involved attendees sat stunned by the fiery and loud (not to mention not entirely in English) verbal exchange.”

“The Muslim-Christian tension as seen at the press conference reflects the complicated political and social climate in Egypt.”

“During the event, the two sides mostly argued over sharia which is part of Egypt’s legal system. One of the Egyptian Muslims, Ibrahim Hussein, was offended that the Christians had criticized sharia and requested the panel to direct their attack against Mubarak and not sharia.”

“In response, Ashraf Famelah, president of Voice of the Copts, said that he organized Monday’s press conference not to attack Islam or sharia, but to call for human rights, including the rights of Coptic Christians, in Egypt.”

“‘We are talking about human rights,’ said Famelah, an architect by profession who studied and lived in Italy for many years.”

“‘You cannot come to me and tell me that you respect human rights when you have the second amendment in your constitution saying sharia law,” he argued firmly but with his emotions restrained, unlike other panelists.”

“Hussein, who spoke as an individual, and his fellow Egyptian Muslim Dr. Amin Mahmoud, the mid-Atlantic chapter coordinator of the Alliance of Egyptian Americans, informed the Coptic speakers that they were going to hold their own press conference next door the following hour to denounce President Mubarak’s visit and to advocate for human rights and democracy in Egypt.”

“They emphasized that their coalition, which accuses the U.S. of supporting “friendly dictators” such as Mubarak, includes Copts and Muslims alike. The two Muslims wanted to invite the Coptic Christians at the event to join their effort to oppose the Egyptian president, who has ruled the country for 28 years.”

“But the Coptic members firmly resisted the invitation because the Muslim men refused to talk about changing the country’s sharia law.”

“In Egypt, Christians live under extremely unjust laws in which they are treated as second class citizens. Up until a few years ago, Christians were not allowed to construct or fix churches unless they received a permit from the president. Even something as small as fixing the church’s faulty faucet or remodeling the bathroom would require presidential approval. The power to approve such requests was recently granted to governors, but the Coptic community has seen little improvement.”

“No such approval is needed for the construction or fixing of mosques in Egypt.”

“There has also been a rise in reports about the abduction of young Christian girls and their forced marriages to Islamic men in Egypt. The families of the kidnapped girls have filed reports with the police, but Coptic groups say security forces have ignored their requests for investigation or have even harassed the families to keep them quiet.”

“During the press event on Monday, Hussein said he didn’t hear of any kidnappings of Coptic girls when he was living in Egypt. Also, Amin Mahmoud noted that his childhood best friend in Egypt was Christian.”

“But that memory of peace and friendship has become just that – a memory.”

“A Washington Post story that ran last year noted the growing divide between the Christian and Muslim communities in Egypt in recent years. Muslims and Christians once lived side-by-side with few conflicts, and establishing lifelong friendships.”

“Now, the story highlighted, Christians and Muslims live in separate neighborhoods and send their children to separate religious schools.”

“‘We used to eat together, play together,’ said Abdul Aziz, an Egyptian Muslim, who fondly recalled memories of Christian childhood friends, to the Post. ‘Honestly, I don’t understand how it has come to this.'”

“The Coptic Christian population in Egypt consists of an estimated six to eight million and is the largest Christian community in the Middle East. Coptic Christians account for about 10 percent of Egypt’s population.”

DC: August 18 White House Protest by Coptic Organizations

Voice of the Copts, National American Coptic Assembly, and American Coptic Union plan to hold a peaceful demonstration at 9 AM on  Tuesday August 18 “in front of the White House” — see more details below:

VOICE OF THE COPTS along with National American Coptic Assembly and American Coptic Union are to organize a peaceful demonstration, on the occasion of President Mubarak’s visit to Washington DC, in front of the White House.

The human rights organization, VOICE OF THE COPTS, with offices In Italy and USA, invites all human rights organizations, activists, and freedom loving citizens to join us in our demonstration to show support for the Christian Copts.

On Tuesday August 18, 2009 gathering at 9:00AM, at Pennsylvania and 17th Street – Washington DC, then would move towards the White House.

The objective of our peaceful demonstration is to protest and expose to the world the unprovoked, continuous and escalating criminal acts against the defenseless and peaceful Copts in Egypt, their families, their homes, their property and the defaming of their Christian religion by the extremists, encouraged by the policy adopted by the Egyptian regime.

The list of human rights violations against the Christian Copts is too long, as long as the 1429 years of suffering, discrimination and oppression since the Islamic invasion of Coptic Egypt.

-We want to reiterate our rightful demands to President Mubarak and his Regime.

– We seek the deletion of Islamic Laws from the Egyptian Constitution.

– The return of all abducted Coptic women to their families immediately.

– We want equal rights for the over than 15,000,000 Copts in their own homeland.

– We want protection of life and property for the Copts.

– We want freedom of faith.

– We want laws to be passed which guarantees freedom to build our places of worship equal to the rights given to Muslims, without having to beg for a permission every time  renovations even to a Church’s lavatory is required.

– We want the Coptic file taken away from the hands of the radical Islamist State Security.

– We want a just and fair representation to the over than 15,000,000 Copts in public life, and their rights to organize themselves in civil non religious organizations.

– We want the immediate release of our innocent Coptic priest Father Metaos.  The return of all exiled Coptic spiritual leaders such as, Bishops Amonious of Luxor, Taklah of Isna, Mitias of Al Mahalah, and all others to their followers and parishioners.

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH
– We say no more to attacks on our churches and monasteries without any protection from the authorities.
– We say no more to Muslims killing Copts without being convicted, following Sharia law of the non-conviction of any Muslim for a crime committed against a Christian. Coptic blood is equal to Muslim blood.
– We say no more to the regime’s plan of systematic abduction, rape and forced Islamization of Coptic teenage girls, in conspiracy with the extremists and the security forces.
– We say no more to the enforced Islamization of Christians in Egypt. Even our monks have been subjected to torture to renounce their faith.
– We say no more to the marginalization of Copts.
– We say no to the government’s plan for the Islamization of Egypt.
– We say no to the government’s plan to eradicate the Coptic Identity.
– We say no to any disrespect to our Christian faith.

We appeal to President Obama to stand by his election promises concerning countries which do not respect human rights and freedom of religion.

Let us together send a strong message to Mr. Mubarak and his Regime that such policies will not be tolerated by the free and civilized world. We ask you as a believer in freedom and human rights to help us defend the rights of the Copts in Egypt, for freedom and security.

Support us to obtain justice and stop the ‘ethnic cleansing’ of the Copts.

DC: Egyptian Christian Human Rights Group Press Conference – Monday, August 17 – 9:30 AM

npc-outside

“Voice of the Copts, a human rights group for 15 million Egyptian Coptic Christians, will hold a News Conference on Monday August 17th at 9:30am in the Lisagor Room of the National Press Club to detail violent attacks against Coptic Christians in Egypt with the blessing of Mubarak’s regime and to demand action by Mubarak to stop such attacks.  Due to 28 years of Mubarak’s refusal to take effective action, President Mubarak is responsible for these violent attacks.”

“Dottore Architetto Ashraf Ramelah, Voice of the Copts’ president, will present a bill of indictment against President Mubarak as a silent partner to murder, torture, rape & other human rights violations against Coptic Christians by violent Muslim extremists in Mubarak’s Egypt.  Dr. Ramelah demands that Mubarak now begin take effective action.”

“Dr. Ashraf Ramelah said, ‘Our objective is to expose the unprovoked criminal acts and escalating human rights violations by President Mubarak and his Egyptian regime against law-abiding Coptic Christians and others in Mubarak’s Egypt.  For 28 years, Mubarak has encouraged and enabled such violence by against Coptic Christians by Mubarak’s refusal to take action.  At our News Conference and peaceful Rally in Washington, the Copts are finally confronting Mubarak.  We urge President Obama to demand that Mubarak now take effective action to ensure human rights for Coptic Christians and others in Egypt.'”

“Dr. Ashraf Ramelah said, ‘A significant Mubarak supporter called me to ask that I cancel the Voice of the Copts News Conference in exchange for a meaningless promise.  Until President Mubarak begins to take effective action to stop all Muslim extremist violence against Coptic Christians in Mubarak’s Egypt, we refuse to make any concessions.  We will not negotiate with terrorists — or with terrorist enablers.'”

“Fifteen million Egyptian Coptic Christians, the Voice of the Copts, and Dr. Ashraf Ramelah demand the following from Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak:”

“1.     That Egyptian President Mubarak take effective action to stop the Muslim extremist torture, rape, and murder of Coptic Christian women, men & children;”

“2.     That Mubarak take action to stop Muslim abductions of Coptic Christians and that Mubarak effect the return of all abducted Coptics to their families;

“3.     That Mubarak take action to stop all Muslim extremist human rights violations & forced Muslim conversions against Coptic Christian women, men & children;”

“4.     That President Mubarak and the Egyptian parliament immediately take action to remove all remnants of Muslim law, also known as Sharia Law, from the Egyptian constitution — or outlaw the applicability of Sharia Law against Coptic Christians and other non-Muslims in Egypt;”

“5.     That President Mubarak and the Egyptian parliament take action to implement human and civil rights for Coptic Christians and other non-Muslims in Egypt equal to the rights of Muslims in Egypt — which rights are now guaranteed in Egypt’s constitution but are effectively denied by the Mubarak regime;”

“6.     That President Mubarak immediately take action to guarantee life, liberty, and the pursuit of economic, religious & other happiness in Egypt by Coptic Christians and other non-Muslims – in a manner that is equal to Muslims in Egypt; and”

“7.     That Egypt’s President Hosni Mubarak (before he leaves Washington) pardon & release Coptic Christian priest Father Mattaos Wahba from a 5-year sentence of hard-labor imprisonment for performing a Christian marriage ceremony for a Christian man and a Christian woman (whom Mattaos did not know had converted to Christianity after being a Muslim — which may almost be a crime in Egypt).”

“Voice of the Copts president Ramelah said, ‘If Mubarak is unwilling or unable to release Father Mattaos, then Egypt’s 15 million Coptic Christians and I ask that President Obama or former President Bill Clinton fly to Egypt to persuade Mubarak — or others who are able — to release Father Mattaos from prison for the ‘crime’ of performing a Christian marriage ceremony.  If Clinton can do this with North Korean President Kim Jong Il, then Clinton may be able to do this with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.  After all, miracles do happen.'”

“Dr. Ramelah also said, ‘If Obama can discuss human rights for Arab Muslims in Israel and how to bring peace and prosperity for all Mid-East peoples, as Obama said when first meeting with Mubarak in Egypt, maybe Obama and Mubarak can now discuss human rights for Coptic Christians in Egypt and how to bring peace and prosperity for all peoples in Egypt.  After all, miracles do happen.'”

“Voice of the Copts — along with the National American Coptic Assembly and the American Coptic Union — has scheduled a peaceful rally at the White House during President Hosni Mubarak’s visit to Washington DC to meet with President Barak H. Obama on Tuesday August 18th.   The rally will begin on Tuesday at 9:00am at Pennsylvania Avenue & 17th Street NW and will then move to the White House.   Mubarak and Obama may then listen and take effective action.”

Egypt – AINA Report: “Abduction and Forced Islamization of Christian Coptic Girls Continues in Egypt”

Egypt – AINA Report: “Abduction and Forced Islamization of Christian Coptic Girls Continues in Egypt”
— “Another recent victim of abduction is 15-year old Marian Bishay, who went out on July 15, 2009 to get dinner for her mother and young brothers from a local restaurant, 50 meters away from where she lives in Omrania, Giza, but failed to return home. The local police succumbed to pressure and issued a missing person report after initially refusing.”
— “some reports said she was raped and forced to convert to Islam, while others said that she was kept in Alexandria against her will.”
— “The systematic abduction and forced Islamization of Coptic minor girls in Egypt is a frequent, dangerous and a rapidly escalating phenomenon, The problem was brought to light by the Coptic Pope Shenouda III as far back as December 17th, 1976, when he protested during a conference held in Alexandria that ‘there is pressure being practiced to convert Coptic girls to embrace Islam and marry them under terror to Muslim husbands’ and demanded that the abducted girls be brought back to their families.”

Egypt: Report on Increasing Extremist Intolerance to Women, Christians

NYT report: On Beaches, Intolerance Wears a Veil
— also addresses increasing violence against Christians
— “there are sharper signs of intolerance: increasing Christian-Muslim clashes, unfamiliar to old Alexandrine eyes”
— “On April 4, a Muslim man was allegedly stabbed by his Coptic Christian landlords in a dispute over garbage collection, according to a July 30 report by the Cairo-based Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights, a human rights watchdog. When the man died the next day, Muslims praying at a mosque in the city’s Karmouz district chanted ‘they will die’ and then trashed Christian-owned stores, the report said.”

Egypt: Two Christians Coptic Girls Abducted for “forced Islamization”

AINA reports: “Muslims Abduct Two Christian Coptic Girls in Egypt”
— “Mrs. Samira Markos, who lives in Alexandria, sent an appeal to Egypt4Christ advocacy, pleading with them to rescue her daughter from forced Islamization. The mother said that her daughter Amira Morgan (born 9/9/1992) was abducted on 7-18-2009 on her way to work in the plastics factory near their home.”
— “Another episode of Coptic female abduction took place on 7-22-2009, also in Alexandria, when 18-year old Ingy Basta went to repair her cell phone in the Nozha Airport area, and was never seen again. Her father reported the case to the police on 23/7/2009 but she has not been found yet. Ingy was be engaged on Sunday 7/26/2009 to a Coptic man.”
— “Egypt4Christ believes that Ingy was abducted by the same Muslim group which operates in the Nozha Airport area of Alexandria. On 28/5/2009 their Imam falsely accused a Coptic young man of stealing the donations box from the Zawiya corner (prayer room) of El-Nour Mosque, after he refused to convert to Islam. Maged Saad was found innocent of this theft by the court.”

Egyptian Christian Father Demands Justice for His Murdered Son

Egyptian Christian Father Demands Justice for His Murdered Son
AINA reports: “Adel Fawzy, the father of the deceased is demanding justice for his murdered son and an appropriate punishment for the culprits according to the law. ‘I do not want my only son’s case to end up like the recent murders of the young Coptic man Jeshua Gamal from Dafash or Milad Ibrahim from El-Tayeba, in Samalut, Minya, where in both murders, the Muslim defendants were not charged according to the law, but got acquitted,’ he told Nader Shoukry of Copts United advocacy in a video interview. ‘I appeal to the conscience of the court: my son was innocent and was treacherously killed — the judge is my last resort'”

Egypt: Report Christians Attacked, Building Torched for Seeking to Worship

COMPASS Direct reports: “Egypt  –  Violence Again Erupts over Quest for Worship Site”
— “Two Copts wounded in Minya province over plan to use building as church venue”
— “The recent eruption of sectarian violence in Egypt’s Minya province continued last week as local Christians again faced harsh reprisals from Muslims for trying to convert a building into a worship facility. On July 24 security forces in the village of Hawasliya were able to prevent a crowd of Muslims, which numbered in the hundreds according to some reports, from torching the building. But the mob succeeded in setting fire to four neighboring stables, killing sheep and cows belonging to Copts. During the melee two Copts, including an elderly woman, were wounded. Both received hospital treatment. “When Muslims see that Christians are making a church, they get upset about it,” said Teresa Kamal, a local journalist. ‘Why are people full of hate like this? Something has happened to radicalize the people.'”

“Egyptian Security Refuses to Return Abducted Christian Coptic Girl”

“Egyptian Security Refuses to Return Abducted Christian Coptic Girl”
AINA reports:
— “Two incidents of abduction of Coptic girls to force them to convert to Islam took place within one week in Upper Egypt. In both cases the Egyptian security predictably played a key role in the outcome of the cases.”
— “Rania Asaad was returned to her family, while Irene Labib is still missing, in spite of pleas from human rights organizations to the security authorities to end this Coptic family’s misfortune.”
— “Irene Hanna Labib, 20-years old, disappeared on 7/1/2009 from Sahel Tahta, Sohag Governorate, 500 km south of Cairo.”
— “The family of 21-year old pharmacy student Rania Tawfik Asaad from Samalut, Minya Governorate, were successful in getting back their daughter, one week she disappeared on 6/27/2009; she was held by her abductor in the small village Of Taha Bosh, Nasser district, in the Beni Suef Governorate.”
— “Rania was approached by Muslim army officer Mohamed Sayed Farag, 29 years old, who posed as a Copt called Mina who was living in Cairo. After a brief courtship, the army officer proposed to her and asked her to meet his elderly mother. According to Ayman Eid of Free Copts advocacy Rania knew the true identity of her abductor only when she arrived at a secluded house in Beni Suef.”
— “Mohamed was also discovered to be a member of the Islamic Welfare Association, which is affiliated to the Muslim Brotherhood. He asked Rania to convert to Islam and marry him, but she refused. After a great ordeal her family discovered her whereabouts and learnt that she was forced to convert to Islam by the Association and married Captain Mohamed two days after her abduction.”

Egypt’s Christians face fresh attacks and legal battles

Report: “Concern is growing for Christians in Egypt following another attack on the homes of Coptic Christians. And a legal battle is taking place in Egypt to overturn a court ruling which denies the right of citizens to change their religious identity on their ID cards.”
— “Former Muslims who have become Christians and who want to change the religion shown on their ID cards have been driven into hiding, along with their families and threatened with death.”
— “‘Many Muslim scholars issued a fatwa, saying I must be killed,’ says Mohammed Hegazy in the latest edition of World Update on the Persecuted Church by Release International.”
— “‘On television, people were saying if they meet me on the streets, they will kill me. Many fatwas have come up saying I must be killed.'”
— “Mohammed and his wife and daughter are now in hiding. His wife has been threatened with death because she married a convert to Christianity.”
