Saudi Arabia: “Save the child bride”

(Saudi Arabia) “Save the child bride”
— “I would have thrown away the Declaration of Human Rights in the wastepaper basket, torn off my clothes and gone into the street like Tarzan — it seems the world has turned into a jungle in which a father is willing to offer his child to a man in his 80s. It is totally disheartening that society is looking at this tragedy as a personal affair and questioning how they can object when the father has given his consent?”

Regarding 9/11 FSA

Responsible for Equality And Liberty (R.E.A.L.) was invited to join an HRCARI event in NYC on 9/11 to remember those who have been killed by Islamic supremacists.  We decided not to attend when we learned that one of the organizations that was going to be at this event is the “9/11 Families for a Secure America” (9/11 FSA) led by Mr. Peter Gadiel.

We are sad to learn that Peter Gadiel writes for and has defended the racist hate group VDARE, stating that its focus is on immigration. R.E.A.L. has protested VDARE in the past and we know better.  R.E.A.L.’s Jeffrey Imm has received an email from Peter Gadiel stating that he is not a racist.  But in the same email to Jeffrey Imm, Mr. Gadiel has also defended VDARE and rationalized VDARE’s promotion of “white nationalist” Jared Taylor (who leads another hate group “American Renaissance” whose past meetings have included David Duke) as equivalent to the promoting the NAACP.

While we extend our sympathies with Mr. Gadiel over his loss on 9/11, we reject the idea that association with groups with a history of hate will ever be productive in gaining security for America.  The 9/11 attacks were based on hate.  Two wrongs don’t make a right.  We urge Mr. Gadiel to rethink his defense of VDARE and his promotion of VDARE on the 9/11 FSA website.

The 9/11 FSA group is no longer listed as a HRCARI partner organization on the HRCARI web site.   The HRCARI mission statement indicates that it “will not ever support any form of supremacism.”

R.E.A.L. will be also leaving the HRCARI coalition. We need to focus our limited resources on ensuring the effectiveness of our own organization and membership.

R.E.A.L.’s leadership apologizes for not having discovered this sooner, and promises that we will be more cautious in joining coalition organizations in the future.

Iran: Growing Fear Iranian Govt will Purge Studies Deemed “un-Islamic”

Report: “Education targeted as threat to Islam”
Scotsman News reporter Michael Slackman:
— “As Iran’s universities prepare to start classes this month, there is a growing fear that the government will purge political and social science departments of professors and curriculums deemed ‘un-Islamic'”
— “The concerns have been stoked by speeches by the supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, as well as confessions of political prisoners that suggest that the study of secular topics and ideas has made universities incubators for the political unrest unleashed after the disputed presidential election in June.”
— “Khamenei said last week that the study of social sciences ‘promotes doubts and uncertainty.’ He urged ‘ardent defenders of Islam’ to review the human sciences that are taught in Iran’s universities and ‘promote secularism'”
— “For years, the study of subjects such as philosophy and sociology has been viewed suspiciously by Iranian conservatives. During the earliest days of the Islamic Revolution, the nation’s leaders closed universities and tried to sanitise curriculums to fit their Islamic revolutionary ideology. The efforts ultimately failed under the weight of more pragmatic forces eager to engage with Western economies, and a student population hungry for contemporary ideas and contact with the West.”
— “But in recent years, academics who attended conferences abroad, or took part in cultural exchange programmes, have often been vilified at home or viewed suspiciously. Some have been arrested on charges of trying to organise a soft revolution.”
— “The recent speeches by the country’s leaders suggest they may no longer be willing to live with such ambiguity after months of unsuccessfully trying to extinguish the political and social crisis set off by the election.”
