Few Palestinians get permits to work in Israel, fewer to pray at Al-Aqsa

Responsible for Equality And Liberty (R.E.A.L.) supports our universal human rights of freedom of religion, freedom of conscience, and freedom of worship for ALL people — without exception.

IPS reports on the inability of Palestinians to pray at the Al-Aqsa mosque, during Ramadan.

IPS reports: “Normally Mohammad works a full eight-hour day. These days during the fast his Arab Israeli contractor gives his fellow Palestinians special dispensation; the workday is cut short at 2.30 pm. Ramadan is a time of worship, of self-reflection, of contemplation. Afterward, he’ll cross back into the West Bank through the Israeli checkpoint, the minibus will stop to allow Mohammad and his fellow workers time for the afternoon prayer. On Friday when they don’t work, they wish they could travel to Jerusalem 35 kilometers away to pray — especially now during Ramadan — at the Al-Aqsa Mosque, Islam’s third holiest site.”

“For that, they can only pray. For Palestinians from outside Jerusalem to be allowed to pray at the Noble Sanctuary requires another Israeli permit. On Friday, there will be tens of thousands in Al-Aqsa — those who have managed to secure the sought-after permit. However, says Mohammad: ‘you have to be at least 50, and also to have a regular permit allowing you into Jerusalem. It’s hopeless. I don’t even bother trying.'”

Green Bay: Anti-Mosque Views Do Not Stop Mosque Approval by City

In Green Bay, Wisconsin, the Green Bay City Council met on the evening of August 17, 2010 to approve a decision made July 2010 by the Green Bay planning commission to allow a zoning request that would allow a mosque to be built in Green Bay for the Islamic Society of Green Bay.  The Islamic Society has been worshiping in temporary facilities since 2005, and says says that it has run out of space at its current location.  WLUK-TV also reported that the new mosque would be associated with the Islamic Society of Wisconsin, with the application listed for the “Church of Islam.”

The Green Bay City Council decided to approve the Green Bay planning commission by a vote of 9-3. According to the Green Bay Press-Gazette and WFRV-TV, those voting against the zoning request for the Green Bay mosque were Green Bay City Council Aldermen Guy Zima, Steven Deneys, and Andy Nicholson.   Guy Zima expressed concerns about Islam as being “intolerant.”

The zoning request was to allow the Islamic Society of Green Bay to use a commercial building on Velp Avenue, which had once been a bait and tackle shop, but had been closed and shuttered for the past 5 years.  Some city council members also sought to consider the financial implications of loss of commercial tax dollars by allowing the mosque to built in the abandoned facility, which is across the street from a cemetery.

The decision to approve the Green Bay planning commission zone recommendation to allow the building of the mosque came after public debate by speakers and by members of the City Council on the zoning request, as well as on Islam.

WFRV News provided a video report on the City Council hearing, where some debated issues about Islam when considering the zoning application for the mosque.  WFRV News described the meeting as “at times a tense discussion.  Most [City Council] alderman felt that religion had no place in the debate.”

WLUK-TV News also has an online video report of the proceedings.

Mosque protester Doug Cayer said about the planned mosque in Green Bay “It disturbs me highly.  I don’t understand a lot of the religion, but what I read about and hear about is so against what I stand for – I’m just dead set against this. I have a problem with radical Islam and its connotations in my neighborhood.”  The Green Bay Press-Gazette also reported that “Doug Cayer, who said he lives nearby, said he was concerned about Islamic followers turning radical and potentially disrupting the neighborhood.”  The Press-Gazette said that Cayer told the City Council: “I don’t want something scary coming to my neighborhood.”

Green Bay City Council Alderman Guy Zima, on the Green Bay Council since 1976, had indicated that he had concerns about sound disturbing others.  (The abandoned building is near a cemetery.)   WLUK-TV reported that “Guy Zima requested the item be sent back to committee to see if a noise stipulation could be added.”

Green Bay City Council Alderman Guy Zima then stated that concerns involved Islam. WLUK-TV reported that Guy Zima stated: “Everybody’s been hopping on the equality bandwagon, which has been part and parcel of the United States of America since its foundation. But this religion at its depths, I don’t think really has the same interest as the American way of life or its values.”

The Green Bay Press-Gazette reported on Mr. Zima’s comments: “Alderman Guy Zima raised several issues with the mosque proposal, including his belief that some followers of Islam are intolerant toward other religions. ‘It has been very divisive in other communities,’ Zima said.”  WLUK-TV News quoted Guy Zima as stating that Islam “has a history of intolerance.”

Mr. Zima is listed as a “libertarian” politician on a a number of libertarian political web sites.  In 2005, the American Renaissance web site praised Green Bay officials who associated racial groups with criminal activity, quoting a 2005 WBAY Green Bay news article where a Brown County Supervisor Guy Zima stated “all we’re getting out of the local newspaper is, you know, the bright side of diversity, not showing the negative side.”

At the August 17, 2010 Green Bay City Council hearing, Green Bay City Council Alderman Brian Danzinger condemned comments made by other elected officials on Islam, stating “we are coming dangerously close to comments that are circulating stereotypes, and again propagating the perceptions that really doesn’t exist.”

The Green Bay Press-Gazette reported that City Council Alderman Ned Dorff said that such decisions cannot be made based on religion or fear: “Alderman Ned Dorff, who represents the area, said the city should view the issue strictly as a land-use matter and should not attempt to legislate any particular religious denomination, ‘It’s not a decision we can make based on religion or based on fear,’ Dorff said.”

The Islamic Society of Green Bay told WFRV News “they do not tolerate extremists saying it is against their beliefs.”

NYC: St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church Seeks to Rebuild After 9/11

In the shadow of the efforts to rebuild the World Trade Center in New York City, another house of worship has sought to be built.  The St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church was originally across the street from the World Trade Center when Tower two collapsed, resulting in its destruction.  Despite many years of negotiations with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church still reportedly has not yet been rebuilt.

For years, news media have been reporting that the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey have been negotiating over an appropriate parcel of land and subsidy to allow the rebuilding of the church.  While agreement seemed to be reached in March 2009, according to New Jersey conservative columnist, Mark Impomeni,”The deal fell apart for good in March 2009, when the Port Authority abruptly ended the talks after refusing to allow church officials to review plans for the garage and screening area underneath. Sixteen months later, the two sides have still not met to resume negotiations.”

In March 2009, the New York Times had reported that Port Authority and the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church had reached an agreement.

The March 2009 New York Times report stated that: “The tiny St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church is once again at the forefront of the myriad disputes that plague the rebuilding effort at ground zero. The fate of the church, a narrow whitewashed building that was crushed in the attack on the World Trade Center, was supposed to have been settled eight months ago, with a tentative agreement in which the church would swap its land for a grander church building on a larger parcel nearby, with a $20 million subsidy from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. This would have allowed work to begin at the south end of the site. But the two sides never came to final terms. After months of negotiations, the Port Authority, which is overseeing reconstruction at ground zero, ended its talks with the church on Monday, saying that the church had sought increasingly costly concessions. Complaints, of course, abound on both sides. The authority now says that St. Nicholas is free to rebuild the church on its own parcel at 155 Cedar Street, just east of West Street. The authority will, in turn, use eminent domain to get control of the land beneath that parcel so it can move ahead with building foundation walls and a bomb-screening center for trucks, buses and cars entering the area.”

The report concluded that “One person who was involved in the negotiations on behalf of the church, and who insisted on anonymity so as not to inflame the situation, criticized the Port Authority, saying it had made constantly shifting demands on St. Nicholas. Still, he said, the remaining issues were relatively small.”

Apparently, however, the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church still has not yet been rebuilt.

The website for the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church continues to call for donations for the rebuilding of the church.

We urge Americans to help this worthy cause.

Afghanistan: Taliban Stone Young Couple to Death

In northern Afghanistan, a young couple were reportedly stoned to death in the Kunduz province’s Dasht-e-Archi district, in front of a crowd of 150 men, with the young woman stoned to death by men first.  Responsible for Equality And Liberty rejects the barbaric practice of stoning and religious extremist groups that endorse and support such cruel killings, which frequently target women.

AP reports: “Taliban militants in northern Afghanistan stoned a young couple to death for adultery, which a rights group said was the first confirmed use of the punishment here since the hardline Islamist regime was ousted in 2001.”

“The Taliban-ordered killing comes at a time when international rights groups have raised worries that attempts to negotiate with the Taliban to bring peace to Afghanistan could mean a step backward for human rights in the country. When the extremists ruled Afghanistan, women were not allowed to leave their houses without a male guardian, and public killings for violations of their harsh interpretation of the Quran were common.

“This weekend’s stoning appeared to arise from an affair between a married man and a single woman in Kunduz province’s Dasht-e-Archi district.”

“The woman, Sadiqa, was 20 years old and engaged to another man, said the Kunduz provincial police chief, Gen. Abdul Raza Yaqoubi. Her lover, 28-year-old Qayum, left his wife to run away with her, and the two had holed up in a friend’s house five days ago, said district government head, Mohammad Ayub Aqyar.”

“They were discovered by Taliban operatives on Sunday and stoned to death in front a crowd of about 150 men, Aqyar said.”

Calls for Additional Debate on Green Bay Mosque Plans Amidst Hate

Responsible for Equality And Liberty (R.E.A.L.) supports our universal human rights of freedom of religion, freedom of conscience, and freedom of worship for ALL people — without exception.  We reject protests against houses of worship, and we reject violence and attacks on houses of worship.

In Green Bay, Wisconsin, City Council Alderman Ned Dorff has asked for a postponement in a zoning hearing for an planned Green Bay Islamic mosque, whose zoning hearing is scheduled the evening of August 17, to obtain more public debate on the issue.  The local newspaper believes that the proposed mosque could result in debate similar to that in New York City.  On the Green Bay newspaper’s website, readers are writing mixed comments, including protesting statements as “Islam is not a religion,” “I oppose Muslims building anything in Green Bay” with a warning to “Stay out of Green Bay,” and asking if those who seek to build a mosque “denounce terrorism or do they believe it is their calling?”.

The Green Bay Press-Gazette and WVFR News are reporting on this subject. On August 17, 2010, the Green Bay Press-Gazette reported on plans by a local government individual to seek to postpone discussion on a Green Bay City Council zoning approval, regarding a group that is seeking to build a mosque.  Their article “Velp Avenue mosque on Green Bay City Council agenda” is posted on two locations on the Press-Gazette’s website.  A hearing on the zoning request is scheduled for the evening of August 17, but City Council Alderman Ned Dorff is telling the press that he seeks a postponement to allow for more public debate on the zoning request for the mosque.

The Green Bay Press-Gazette reports that a group called the Church of Islam seeks Green Bay city zoning approval to build a mosque “in the shuttered Bob’s Bait and Tackle shop, 1512 Velp Ave.”  The Green Bay Press-Gazette reports that a Green Bay city District 7 City Council Alderman Ned Dorff, representing the west side area of Green Bay “questioned whether many nearby residents and business owners are aware of the proposed development” and might “ask for a postponement on council action to allow for more public debate.”  Green Bay alderman Ned Dorff told the Press-Gazette that because he has not heard from any constituents on the zoning request,”We need to talk about this more publicly.”  Ned Dorff was endorsed by the Green Bay Press-Gazette in his 2010 campaign to win a seat on the Green Bay City Council.

The Green Bay Press-Gazette informed the public on the zoning plan on August 16, 2010, in an article entitled “Green Bay City Council scheduled to hear proposal for mosque on Velp Avenue,” where it states “As a proposed mosque in New York  City sparks a national debate about religious tolerance, Green Bay city officials could be facing a similar issue on Velp Avenue.”

On Ned Dorff’s Facebook page, he asks “Proposal to rezone commercial land for religious use on Velp is coming to council tomorrow night. Good idea? Bad idea? Sound off here or come to council 7 PM 2nd floor city hall.”

============================

Update:

Ned Dorff sent the following statement to R.E.A.L. on his position:

“To give you some background on a few points in your article: The reporter asked me if I’d heard public feedback about a commercial area being rezoned for non-taxable religious use. I said I hadn’t and that it’s a sign that word didn’t get out. My only concern is taking a property off the tax rolls that we just (July 20) voted on to zone as commercial in an area we are trying to redevelop as a business district might go against the overall plan for the corridor. (Those concerns have since been assuaged).”

“I consider myself a progressive person and I am proud to represent the most progressive voting district in the city of Green Bay, which traditionally hasn’t voted based on race, gender, or creed.”

“Please issue a correction to your article that my only concern was about taking a commercial parcel off the tax rolls. That concern has since been addressed by very capable staff in our planning and economic development departments. The Press-Gazette shaped their story the way they wanted.  You can also feel free to include the other statement I wrote on Facebook about how council should treat this as a zoning issue, not a religious debate. Please contact the others who have picked up your story. I might have been painted as a xenophobic enemy by a quote taken out of context, but nothing could be further from the truth.”

“I do not look forward to the day where city government meddles with the First Amendment to favor one group over another. I will _not_ delay or vote down the proposal based on anti-Islamic sentiment. That would be an ugly, irresponsible thing to do.”

Ned Dorff also states on his Facebook page: “This debate has unfortunately turned into one over religion. Really, as a council, we should have no say over legal religious activity, as per the 1st Amendment. To do so in Green Bay would set a very dangerous, probably illegal, precedent. What we are looking at is the zoning of the area and the best way to redevelop Velp. How do we zone properly to provide neighborhood services, encourage business and keep the street in good condition?”

=============================

The Press-Gazette stated that the Green Bay planning commission had already unanimously voted last month to support to zoning change to allow the former bait and tackle shop to be converted into a mosque, and stated that the decision had to be ratified by the Green Bay City Council to allow the mosque to be built.

Religious Diversity News reports that an attempt was made to open an Islamic center in Green Bay in 2005, which apparently found worship space in a building in Packerland Drive.

Reader comments on the Green Bay Press-Gazette web site have included those quoting Stop Islamization of America (SIOA)’s Executive Director Pamela Geller’s “Atlas Shrugs” website, who is leading the protest against the 51 Park Place Islamic Center in New York City. SIOA leaders and supporters are known to be active in mosque protests in Staten Island and on August 16, R.E.A.L. reported that SIOA supporters are now protesting a planned mosque in KentuckySIOA supporters have stated that they seek to “Close and dismantle ALL mosques, mosques have no place in America.”  SIOA supporters have promoted the plan for a “Burn A Qur’an Day,” and call for the criminalization of Islam in America.

There are now eight states where the anti-Islam mosque protest campaigns have spread: California, Tennessee, Wisconsin, North Carolina, FloridaConnecticut, Kentucky, and throughout New York.

On the Green Bay Press-Gazette web site, anti-mosque reader comments have included those stating “Islam is not a religion,” “I oppose Muslims building anything in Green Bay” with a warning to “Stay out of Green Bay,” and asking if those who seek to build a mosque “denounce terrorism or do they believe it is their calling?”.

The Sheboygan, Wisconsin area had numerous public debates and protests for two months over a small planned mosque in Wilson, Wisconsin in March 2010, which was finally approved in May 2010.  The Wilson mosque was then vandalized in June 2010, by anti-mosque vandals smashing windows with large pieces of asphalt.

Responsible for Equality And Liberty (R.E.A.L.) notes that religious freedom is not only defended by our Constitution and as part of our universal human rights, but also there are specific federal statutes involved with zoning issues.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, “the land use provisions of the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act of 2000 (RLUIPA), 42 U.S.C. §§ 2000cc, et seq., protect individuals, houses of worship, and other religious institutions from discrimination in zoning and landmarking laws (for information on RLUIPA’s institutionalized persons provisions, please refer to the Civil Rights Division’s Special Litigation Section ).”

“In passing this law, Congress found that the right to assemble for worship is at the very core of the free exercise of religion. Religious assemblies cannot function without a physical space adequate to their needs and consistent with their theological requirements. The right to build, buy, or rent such a space is an indispensable adjunct of the core First Amendment right to assemble for religious purposes. Religious assemblies, especially, new, small, or unfamiliar ones, may be illegally discriminated against on the face of zoning codes and also in the highly individualized and discretionary processes of land use regulation. Zoning codes and landmarking laws may illegally exclude religious assemblies in places where they permit theaters, meeting halls, and other places where large groups of people assemble for secular purposes. Or the zoning codes or landmarking laws may permit religious assemblies only with individualized permission from the zoning board or landmarking commission, and zoning boards or landmarking commission may use that authority in illegally discriminatory ways.”

“To address these concerns, RLUIPA prohibits zoning and landmarking laws that substantially burden the religious exercise of churches or other religious assemblies or institutions absent the least restrictive means of furthering a compelling governmental interest. This prohibition applies in any situation where: (i)  the state or local government entity imposing the substantial burden receives federal funding; (ii)  the substantial burden affects, or removal of the substantial burden would affect, interstate commerce; or (iii)  the substantial burden arises from the state or local government’s formal or informal procedures for making individualized assessments of a property’s uses.”

“In addition, RLUIPA prohibits zoning and landmarking laws that: (1) treat churches or other religious assemblies or institutions on less than equal terms with nonreligious institutions; (2)  discriminate against any assemblies or institutions on the basis of religion or religious denomination; (3)  totally exclude religious assemblies from a jurisdiction; or (4) unreasonably limit religious assemblies, institutions, or structures within a jurisdiction.”

“The Department of Justice can investigate alleged RLUIPA violations and bring a lawsuit to enforce the statute. The Department can obtain injunctive, but not monetary, relief. Individuals, houses of worship, and other religious institutions can also bring a lawsuit in federal or state court to enforce RLUIPA.”

Kentucky: Mosque Protest Efforts in Florence

Responsible for Equality And Liberty (R.E.A.L.) supports our universal human rights of freedom of religion, freedom of conscience, and freedom of worship for ALL people — without exception.  We reject protests against houses of worship, and we reject violence and attacks on houses of worship.

But today, in yet another of the continuing coast-to-coast protests against mosques around America, anti-Islam activists are seeking to recruit  protesters to demand a halt to plans since 2008 to build a mosque in Florence, Kentucky, with claims that the local mosque is part of an effort in the “takeover of our country.”  Mosque protesters are also stating that who object their efforts to deny religious freedom and freedom of worship to Kentucky Muslims are “anti-American people” who are “free to leave” the country.

According to the  Kentucky Courier-Journal, the application was filed in April 2008 and approved by the Boone County Planning Commission in June 2008.

The North Kentucky Enquirer reported that a group called the “Mercy Foundation, Inc., has approval to build a mosque near Mall Road in Florence, with another report states is to be built at 900 Cayton Road.  The Enquirer states the effort is led by a Florence, Kentucky physician, Mohammed Zineddin, who is president of the Mercy Foundation.  Both the Enquirer and the Courier-Journal report that the building area is zoned for Commercial Two (C-2) allowing religious buildings.  FOX 19 News reported that the mosque was being planned by the Islamic Center of Northern Kentucky.

On July 25, 2010, the North Kentucky Enquirer reported that that “Boone County Assistant Zoning Administrator Mitch Light said there has been no such public response to this plan. ‘We have not heard from anyone opposed to the project,’ Light said.”

Apparently this has now changed. According to the August 16, 2010  Kentucky Courier-Journal, the mosque proposal is now receiving “a strong reaction from some in the community,” including calls to Forence city officials, a flier being distributed in Florence neighborhoods.

FOX 19 News reports in its story “Neighborhood flyer rejects mosque”: “A flyer left on doors and mailboxes in a Florence neighborhood is stirring up more attention around a mosque being built nearby. Neighbors we spoke with had mixed feelings about the mosque, but everyone had the same concern, who is circulating the flyer and why didn’t that person/group want to be identified.”

According to the Courier-Journal, the anti-mosque flier states: “Cayton Road is in your neighborhood… Everyone needs to contact Florence City Council to have this stopped. Americans need to stop the takeover of our country.”  FOX 19 News has images of the flier including its statement urging protesters to “Do your part to stop the take-over of our country of our country.  Use your voice to speak out.  If anti-American people do not like the way we are, they are free to leave.  We are the United States of America, not an Islamic nation.”  The fliers were anonymous, but appears to have the same image as an individual’s Facebook page photo background graphic, with a web site protesting the mosque.

FOX 19 News has a video report online on the efforts by anti-Islam activists to encourage others to protest the mosque.

The Courier-Journal quotes Joshua Wice, community/business development director for the city of Florence who states that he is not surprised that people have questions, but all of the questions are being answered to people’s satisfaction.

The Courier-Journal also states: “”Much of the criticism has focused on city or county officials for allowing the project to go forward or not holding public hearings, but undue scrutiny or unwarranted efforts to impede the project might well have violated federal laws. The Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act is often described as federal zoning for religious uses.”

The Courier-Journal also reports on a website “run by a Boone County resident that posts anti-Islamic messages” to seek Florence residents to “Stop the Mosque.”

The Kentucky anti-Islam, anti-Mosque website called “The Vigilante” describes “Enemy One” as “Islam.”  The anti-mosque website is led by a Christian, Mark Hallenberg, in Kentucky who views the anti-mosque campaign as part of promoting “Christian values” and attacking a “Marxist-Socialistic agenda.”

In his protest against the planned mosque and “Northern Kentucky Rising,” Mark Hallenberg claims that he contacted two dozen Boone County residents about the planned Florence, Kentucky mosque, with 50 percent opposing it (according to him).  Mr. Hallenberg also calls for an investigation into the funding  of the mosque and into Mercy Foundation. He also repeats claims from others that “Islam declared war on the United States.”

On Mark Hallenberg’s web site, he links to the Heritage Foundation, and promotes videos by Pat Condell and Frank Gaffney, and praises Geert Wilders as a political “Braveheart.”

Mark Hallenberg repeats claims by Stop Islamization of America (SIOA) leader Pamela Geller on Oklahoma City bomber  Timothy McVeigh SIOA leader Geller claimed in April 2010 that the Oklahoma City bombing was “the first heinous Islamic terror attack on American soil.”

Kentucky mosque protester Mark Hallenberg is also a supporter of the Stop Islamization of America (SIOA) group led by Pamela Geller.

The Stop Islamization of America (SIOA) group is the leading organization behind the planned September 11, 2010 protest against the 51 Park Place Islamic Center in New York.  SIOA’s top leaders have also been active in mosque protests in Staten Island.  After the recent decision not to sell land to a mosque in Staten Island, SIOA leaders and supporters claimed victory, with SIOA supproters stating: “SIOA is mighty and growing stronger every minute. The evil comes out of the mosques, now and in Mohammed’s time. Close and dismantle ALL mosques, mosques have no place in America the Free….One down and so many more to go.”

R.E.A.L. has reported that the SIOA’s Executive Director seeks to recruit members and supports the violent English Defence League group.  SIOA supporters have promoted the plan for a “Burn A Qur’an Day,” and call for the criminalization of Islam in America.

Mr. Hallenberg has used the SIOA Facebook since May 2010 to recruit Kentucky supporters for his anti-Islam movement in Kentucky.

On Mark Hallenberg’s Facebook page, he states that he is a member of the Northern Kentucky Tea Party.  R.E.A.L. has contacted the Boone County representative of the Northern Kentucky Tea Party for comment, and received the following response: “The Northern Kentucky Tea Party is not involved in any way with a protest of a planned mosque in Florence, or anywhere. Our issues are those which impact free people of all faiths: Fiscal Responsibility, Limited Government, and Free Markets.””

Mark Hallenberg also claims to work for a survivalist organization that promotes Krista Branch‘s Tea Party supporting video of individuals waving Gadsden flags, “I’ve got some news, we’re taking names, We’re waiting now for the judgment day.”

9/11 and the Rise of the World Trade Center

As the ninth anniversary of the 9/11 attack on the New York City World Trade Center approaches in less than a month, it is important to remember those who murdered that day, and the America, with its Constitutional rights and inalienable human rights that they represented then and must still represent now.

Living here in Washington DC, I remember the 9/11 attacks also on our nation’s capital and the pain that these attacks caused all Americans.  In New York City, I stood at the 9/11 crater and remember the horrific act of war that was indelibly burned into the memories of all Americans at the remains of the World Trade Center and “Ground Zero.”

Amidst the pain, we must also remember the progress that we have and must continue to make.  America needs the World Trade Center to be rebuilt as a symbol that America will not submit to terrorists, anytime, anywhere.

Americans can keep track of the new 1 World Trade Center (previously named “Freedom Tower”) construction progress online at:  http://bit.ly/freedomtower.

Photos of the progress on the rebuilding of 1 World Trade Center and June 2010 photographs on the progress of the building are also available online. In addition, photos of the construction progress of the 9/11 National Memorial are also online.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey states that it has a live camera to see the work, and the national 911 memorial also has a webcam of this.

According to the Lower Manhattan Construction Command Center, “The Port Authority is making progress on the $3.1 billion 1 World Trade (formerly called the ‘Freedom Tower’). Located at the northwest corner of the WTC site, installation of steel columns and core concrete continues.”

“The skyscraper is being built according to a revised design released in June 2005. The new design retains essential elements of the original plan– soaring 1,776 feet into the sky, its illuminated mast evoking the Statue of Liberty’s torch — but features a smaller, cubic base set back further from West Street to protect the building against future attacks.”

“Rising from its square base — which will be constructed of impermeable concrete and steel — the redesigned Freedom Tower will taper into eight tall isosceles triangles, forming a perfect octagon at its center. An observation deck will be located 1,362 feet above ground and there will be a square glass parapet at 1,368 feet, the heights of the original Twin Towers. From these, an illuminated spire containing a television antenna will rise to a final height of 1,776 feet.”

“Other key elements include; 2.6 million square feet of office space, tenant amenity spaces, world-class restaurants, below-grade retail, and access to the PATH, subway, and World Financial Center. According to the Port Authority schedule, the tower is expected to open in the fourth quarter of 2013.”

The Command Center states that “One significant delay was the redesign of the tower in the spring 2005, to better accommodate security measures at street level.”

While some talk about creating new buildings, the 1 World Trade Center is being BUILT.
