The Rochester Minnesota Post-Bulletin reports:

— “The Cambodian Buddhist temple in southeast Rochester has taken a series of security measures following a string of vandalism and harassment. The temple installed motion-detecting exterior lights and a steel-barred security door in the monks’ residence in March after attempted break-ins by a man wearing a ski mask, said Chhan Aun, 60, the temple’s head monk. The measures have not stopped the break-in attempts, five in total, Aun said.”
— “Following a suggestion from the post office, the temple also removed its mailbox from 29th Street Southeast last week and and placed it next to its main building at the end of a long driveway. The box has been repeatedly vandalized. Incoming and outgoing mail has been stolen in recent years, including bank statements, bills, and immigration documents whose theft has complicated the arrival of new monks from Cambodia, according to temple members.”
— “Vandalism at the temple a year ago included smashed lights, yanked flowers and a cross along with ‘Jesus saves’ spray-painted on the driveway in orange.”

Hindu Temple Attacked – $5000 in Damages

The Australian Campletown-MacArthur Advertiser reports on “Hindu temple claims attack on religion”:

IT STARTED off as a few graffiti tags on the side of Mukti Gupteshwar Mandir Shiva Hindu Temple in Eagleview Road, Minto.

But last week things got worse.

Offenders destroyed a 200-metre fence and forced their way into the temple before smashing light fixtures on Monday, April 19. They damaged property worth more than $5000.

The attack happened between 3pm and 5pm.

Minto Hindu Society president Prem Misra said local religious followers were being victimised.

‘‘We have spent more than $3000 on community activities and to cop this sort of treatment is nonsense,’’ he said. ‘‘I can’t understand why they would deliberately do this. Why does it keep happening to us? One can only conclude this is an attack on our religion.’’

The temple was built in 1991 after Campbelltown Council controversially approved the development in a scenic protection area. The proposal included a temple structure built partially below ground level to give the illusion that the building was underground.

Mr Misra said when he walked onto the property after the recent attack, he found broken light fittings, a section of fence missing and smashed glass.

‘‘This is illegal, immoral and unethical. This is obviously a place of worship so it’s just not right. It’s stirred up a lot of people’s emotions and we don’t want to create this type of tension in our community.

— “Derogatory remarks, beatings, pressure to convert to Islam drive two girls to drop out.”

— “Muslim teachers at Government Higher Secondary School in village No. 79-NB (Northern Branch), Sargodha, in Punjab Province, have so abused Christian students that two of the dozens of Christian girls at the school have dropped out, said a 16-year-old student identified only as Sana.”
— “‘Christian students are teased and mocked by radical Muslim, female teachers from the start of the school day to the end,’ she said. ‘Due to the contemptuous behavior on religious grounds by the fanatical Muslim principal and staff, Christian students feel dejected, depressed and frustrated. I am totally broken-hearted because of the intolerance and discrimination.'”
— “Rebecca Bhatti, a 16-year-old grade 10 student, told Compass she left the government school because her main teacher, along with an Islamic Education & Arabic Language teacher identified only as Sumaira, a math teacher identified only as Gullnaz, other Muslim teachers and Ferhat Naz, the principal, would call Christian girls in to the staff room at recess and demand that they polish their shoes or wash their undergarments and other clothes.”

Pakistan Government Blocks Facebook and YouTube Sites

Multiple media reports have expressed how the Pakistan government is blocking Facebook and YouTube for at least two weeks over the “cartoon controversy” associated with May 20 “Draw Muhammad Day,” which is being viewed as an insult to Muslims and to Islam.

R.E.A.L. has been reporting on this “cartoon controversy,” which also included a recent arson attack on a Swedish cartoonist Lars Vilks.

In our posting “Cartoon Contests and Human Dignity,” R.E.A.L. has indicated that our human rights of freedom of expression also include the right and responsibility of human dignity, but such offensive expressions never justify threats and violence.  R.E.A.L. also published the comments of Muslims on human rights and dignity on May 20.

The Pakistan Daily Times reports that:
— “The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has directed all Internet service providers in Pakistan to block Facebook until further orders. These directions have been issued in compliance with the orders of the Information Technology Ministry in view of the decision of the Lahore High Court. Justice Ijaz Ahmad Chaudhry had ordered the PTA to block the social networking website until May 31 across the country for hosting a competition of making caricatures of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). The PTA director submitted that they had blocked the link to the relevant page instead of the entire website.”

Pakistan Dawn reports on protests about the “cartoon controversy”, and the Pakistan government’s decision to further block YouTube web sites over “blasphemous’ material, stating: “Pakistan has blocked the popular video sharing website YouTube indefinitely in a bid to contain ‘blasphemous’ material, officials said on Thursday.”

This is not the first such instance of Pakistan government involvement in the “cartoon controversy.”  Two years ago on April 15, 2008, the Pakistan National Assembly passed a resolution to urge the United Nations to seek capital punishment for those drawing cartoons and expressing comments viewed to be “blasphemous.”  In the Pakistan Daily Times April 16, 2008 report, it indicated that Pakistan Prime Minister Gilani attended this meeting of the Pakistan National Assembly “moments” after this resolution was passed.

NBC also reported:
— “He added, ‘I support the Civil Rights Act because I overwhelmingly agree with the intent of the legislation, which was to stop discrimination in the public sphere and halt the abhorrent practice of segregation and Jim Crow laws.’
— “In his 15-minute interview with Maddow, Paul repeatedly declined or sidestepped opportunities to endorse the provisions of the 1964 law which require hotels, restaurants, and other businesses to accept all customers without discriminating on the basis of race or ethnicity.”
— “He repeated several times that he opposes racial discrimination. ‘I’m not in favor of any discrimination of any form, I would never belong to any club that excluded anybody for race,’ he said. At the end of the interview, Paul added, ‘I don’t believe that any private property (owner) should discriminate either.'”
— “But he did not say whether he supported using federal law to enforce non-discrimination in privately owned businesses. He said ‘had I been around’ in 1964 ‘I would have tried to modify that.’
— “He also said the debate over the civil right law’s limits on rights of private property owners ‘is still a valid discussion.’ ”

NPR: “Rand Paul In Civil Rights Bill Firestorm”

— NPR reports on NBC interview, where asked about “desegregating lunch counters,” Rand Paul replies “Well, what it gets into then is if you decide that restaurants are publicly owned and not privately owned…”

Notably, Mr. Rand Paul’s comments were quickly defended by a number of diverse individuals, ranging from political activists to Neo-Nazis such as “Kievsky” formerly with the Neo-Nazi National Alliance organization on the “white nationalist” website Occidental Dissent.  Nazi “Kievsky” calls the NBC woman reporter a homosexual slur in the title of his posting.

NYC Car Bomb Plot: Emails Show Faisal Shahzad Rejecting Democracy, Call for Caliphate

In the ongoing investigation of the NYC Times Square Car Bomb Plot, CNN reported on May 17, 2010 that emails reportedly written by terror suspect Faisal Shahzad as a “frustrated Muslim.”

An aspect of Faisal Shahzad’s emails not addressed by CNN is his rejection of democracy and calls for an extremist caliphate.

As shown in the Adobe Acrobat file of reported emails by Faisal Shahzad, he wrote that : “Why do you have to follow Democracy (Human made Laws) if you’re already given Laws revealed from Allah, Quran, and Sunnah. Khilafath is what we Muslim ruled the world with, weren’t we successful in world then?”

The continuing challenge, both in the United States of America and around the world, with religious extremist organizations that reject democracy is one that Responsible for Equality And Liberty has consistently referenced and challenged, whether it is the anti-democracy extremist Hizb ut-Tahrir or Anjem Choudary or the Christian extremacist Hutaree or Westboro Baptist Church hate group.

We remain concerned that those that seek to defy democracy are actually seeking the destruction of our unqualified, universal human rights.  Terrorist suspect Faisal Shahzad’s attacks on democracy and call for a Caliphate have been echoed in public forums by the Hizb ut-Tahrir America organization in July 2009 in Oak Lawn Illinois.  Such individuals and groups that we have called “extremists” are unquestionably against democracy, against our unqualified universal human rights, and seek the recreation of a global Islamic caliphate.

Those of us Responsible for Equality And Liberty stand to defy those who seek the destruction of our universal human rights, and who reject our unity in pluralism that respects all religions, races, genders, and ethnicity.

UK: Anti-Democracy Leader Anjem Choudary Threats to Woman Muslim MP

In the United Kingdom, anti-democracy leader of the banned group “Islam4UK”  Anjem Choudary has condemned and spoke of threats to the new Muslim woman Member of Parliament (MP) Sayeeda Warsi.

Responsible for Equality And Liberty (R.E.A.L.) has previously reported on Anjem Choudary’s attacks on democracy, pluralism, and our universal human rights, and his demands for anti-democratic version of Sharia to be imposed on the United Kingdom which would deny democracy and our human rights.

The UK Daily Star reported on Anjem Choudary’s rant against the woman Muslim minister, reporting that Anjem Choudary stated: “Sayeeda Warsi is not a Muslim in my eyes. She may look like a Muslim and have a Muslim-sounding name but she does not represent Islam or anyone in this country who is a Muslim. She is a ‘coconut,’ brown on the outside but white on the inside. In fact, she is whiter than most of the other white people in government. How can she be a Muslim and support the military involvement of the British Army in Islamic countries? She is somebody who pretends to be a practising Muslim but, from her views and statements, she is clearly against Sharia. She is a disgrace and many true Muslims are angry that she claims to stand for Islam despite betraying Allah.”

The Daily Star also reports that Anjem Choudary stated that Sayeeda Warsi would be the target of hate, stating: “She will be attacked by eggs every time she goes near a Muslim community. Some more extreme protesters may take the attacks further. There is no doubt she is in danger.”

In regards to an upcoming protest in Belgium, Choudary told the Daily Star “there will be blood on the streets.”

UK: Woman Kiana Firouz Seeks Asylum in UK, Fears Death in Iran

Media and human rights blogs are reporting on the case of Kiana Firouz, an Iran lesbian actress seeking asylum in the United Kingdom.  Ms. Firouz was recently an actress in the film “Cul de Sac,” which largely addresses her life as a lesbian in Iran.  She has been denied asylum in the United Kingdom, and friends and human rights activists fear the consequences should she be returned to Iran.  In Iran, homosexuality is punishable by death.

The London Times reports: “Unfortunately for Kiana Firouz the film is not make-believe. It is based on her life. The Home Office has denied her asylum and she now faces the prospect of deportation to Iran followed by flogging, execution or both. ‘Definitely she will be killed,’ says Ramin Goudarzi Nejad, the London-based director of Cul-de-Sac. ‘She would be arrested … She would be tortured. She could face execution not for being a lesbian but for embarrassing the regime,’ said Paul Canning, editor of the website LGBT Asylum News.”
