New York Senate to Vote on Equal Rights Amendment (ERA)

We have received the following action alert on the ERA in New York State:

NYS Senate to Vote on Equal Rights Amendment to NY Constitution

Urgent! WE NEED YOU to take action immediately!

Today, we at NOW-NYS learned that, in a few days, Senate Bill #3489 (the NYS Equal Rights Amendment) is coming up for a vote on the NYS Senate floor. The legislation “provides that no person shall, because of sex, be subjected to any discrimination in his or her civil rights by any other person or by any firm, corporation, or institution, or by the state or any agency or subdivision of the State.” In short, the bill bans gender-based civil rights discrimination.

For the past four years, I, as NOW-NYS President, have been lobbying for this measure. Now, there’s a very real chance to make it happen. But we need to get out the vote for this bill.

Once the bill passes the Senate, it will then go to the NYS Assembly, where it will be up to Assemblywoman Helene Weinstein (D), to allow this legislation onto the floor.

However, this is not an ordinary bill but a Constitutional Amendment, whose passage in New York is a multi-step and multi-year process wherein: 1) the Legislature introduces a bill, 2) the Attorney General approves the bill, 3) the Senate and Assembly must pass the bill by a majority before the end of a two-year legislative session.

Then: 4) after the election, at the start of the next two-year legislative session, the Constitutional Amendment must age for three months before the Legislature can vote on it ONCE AGAIN. And: 5) assuming legislative passage, the Amendment must finally be approved by the voters.

So this is the very first step in getting our NYS Equal Rights Amendment. But an important step it is! And to get this very big ball rolling WE NEED YOUR HELP!

Take Action now by contacting your Senator. Urge her or him to vote for Senate Bill #3489. It’s time for New York State to make sure women are protected by the New York State Constitution!

Iran: ICC Reports Nine Christians Arrested

ICC reports:

On February 2, Rev. Wilson Issavi was arrested by Iranian state security agents in Isfahan, Iran, an incident that has recently hit mainstream Christian media.  However, ICC sources have confirmed that there were an additional eight other Christians arrested along with Rev. Issavi who are currently imprisoned and awaiting charges.  The names and whereabouts of the remaining eight Christians must remain undisclosed for security purposes.

Rev. Issavi was visiting a friend’s home in Shahin Shahr, Isfahan when state security raided the house unannounced.  Rev. Issavi, his hosts and others were apprehended by the security agents and immediately taken to prison.  Friends and family are deeply concerned as they are unable to contact Rev. Issavi.  The location and physical condition of the nine Christians is unknown.

The arrest of Rev. Issavi was a devastating blow to the Iranian Christian community.  Rev. Issavi is known among friends as a humble and devoted servant of the church.  He is considered a man of prayer who has lived a modest life to better assist those in need.

The arrests occurred after the Iranian government forced the closure of Rev. Issavi’s church, the Evangelical Church of Kermanshah, on January 2.  Before its closure, the Evangelical Church of Kermanshah was among the few remaining open churches in the country.

Iranian Christians are under constant threat of discrimination, imprisonment, torture, and even execution by the Iranian government which severely restricts religious freedom.

Nigeria – ICC Report: “Muslim Mob Burns Down Christian Shops, 8 Churches in Nigeria”

ICC Report: “Muslim Mob Burns Down Christian Shops, 8 Churches in Nigeria”

Washington, D.C. (February 23, 2010)–International Christian Concern (ICC) has learned that on February 21 a Muslim mob burned down several Christian shops and eight churches in Kazaure, northern Nigeria. The mob carried out the attack after Muslim traffic police fatally assaulted a Muslim tractor driver. Unfortunately, it is common for Muslims to attack Christian minorities in northern Nigeria without any provocation by Christians.

The police chased the tractor driver for refusing to stop after a traffic violation in the city of Kazaure. The police caught the driver and severely assaulted him. The driver was later taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead on February 21 at 8 PM local time.

Soon after, a Muslim mob attempted to attack the police station but was chased away by the police. Enraged, the mob turned their attention instead on one of this region’s most vulnerable targets-Christian churches and shops. The mob burned down the following churches: Deeper Life Bible Church, Catholic Church, Apostolic Church, ECWA Church, Redeem Christian Church, Anglican Church, Word of Faith, and Assemblies of God Church all in the city of Kazaure.

According to ICC sources, there had been tension in Kazaure after the January Christian-Muslim conflict in Jos, Nigeria, in which over 300 people were killed.

Most of the residents of Kazaure are Muslims. The city is located in the northern Nigerian state of Jigawa. Christian minorities in northern Nigeria regularly face discrimination and violence by the Muslim majority.

The Emir of Kazaure, the police authorities, and authorities of the Jigawa state have condemned the attack.

ICC’s Regional Manager for Africa and South Asia, Jonathan Racho, said, “We strongly condemn the attack against Christian businesses and churches. We are seriously concerned with the attacks on vulnerable Christian minorities in Kazaure by Muslim mob. We call upon officials of the state of Jigawa and the federal authorities of Nigeria to fully investigate this latest attack against Christians and bring the perpetrators of the attacks to justice.”

Please call the Nigerian embassy in your country and politely ask Nigerian officials to fully investigate this latest attack and bring the perpetrators of the attack to justice.
